Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Catch-All

I'm still waiting for the game to go on sale. I thought it would happen when the expanded version was announced, but maybe people are waiting until right before Dark Arisen is released?

New Dark Arisen trailer.

A queer shadow approaches.

That's a horrible trailer. I'm still going to buy the expansion, but the corny dialogue by your pawns is one of the weaknesses of the game. Bad idea to highlight it.

It also tends to make the game look pretty rough visually. The graphics are great in the existing game. Hopefully the trailer is doing the new stuff a disservice rather than the new stuff actually being that poor.

A Dark Arisen preview is up at Game trailers. Some good info.

So I might be missing something, but are they releasing Dark Arisen alone or only as the $40 full game package? Because I already own the base game and theres just no way I can justify rebuying something I already own. Even if more content comes with it.

Yeah it's only going to be available as the full package. Here's a post detailing the situation, and a quote from the Capcom guy regarding the situation.

I get it guys. We went round and round with the team on this topic as it would have been a preferred option from our standpoint too. As it turns out, I’m sorry but unfortunately there were major technical limitations that would couldn’t [sic] allow for a digital upgrade path. The original game was just not designed to be expanded (no hooks in the original code) and so a full-game delivery mechanism was the only option.
We also tried to explore a number of mechanisms to try and otherwise put this full product in original owners hands at a discount digitally but we would have run afowl of a few first party policies (not any first party’s fault, t’was our fault).

So instead, we’re packing more than $20 worth of value in digital rewards for existing users: 100K rift crystals (which in DDDA have a LOT more uses than they did in DD vanilla) the Gransys armor pack and the unlimited Ferrystone. We hope this will be a sufficent “thank you” for being part of the first wave of Dragon’s Dogma fans given the development limitations we had.

Thanks again for your continued support and I hope to see you in Gransys in April.

Huh...Shows what I get for not reading back on the thread about it, thanks of the link. Well when they put it that way it doesn't seem so bad at all to do things the way they are doing it. I like the fact that they at least tried to work with their fan base about it and seemed genuinely sorry that they couldn't. Good on them. I like seeing things like that.

Yeah, I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to buy the whole package again but I'm willing. I got 75 hours out of my $60 in the original game, so they deserve it.

It's kind of refreshing to hear someone at Capcom acknowledging their bad planning around a franchise they've had a change of heart about (or in this case, a formerly one-off game they decided to turn into a franchise). They're likely to get my money for this one at some point.

Pretty much anytime someone apologetically owns up to what they've done, it mitigates the bad feelings.

Pretty much. Most time when people or companies screw up they usually have some sort of decent reason. Tell us that reason and say what your gonna do about it. Try to hide or deny it with some bull and well that's gonna bite you in the ass later.

Definitely getting this version for my PS3. Can hardly wait...

Couldn't agree more. It's extra nice to hear it from Capcom, a company so frequently in blind lumbering dinosaur mode. But maybe I'm just getting soft in my older age.

This just dropped to $20 on Amazon, so I'm going to pick it up. I'm guessing most of the crowd here is playing on 360. I should probably grab it for 360 so I can take better advantage of the multiplayer stuff, right?

There are a good number of us on 360 ready to be friended. There is an expanded version of the game coming out called Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen. Probably worth getting that version as it has the entire original game in it.

I'm getting it for PS3, dunno quite why I feel like getting it for the PS3, but it seems right, since the online bits aren't as online-intensive. Odd ideas in my head.

Good to know. I'm surprised it's taken this long to drop to $20.

I'm not convinced that I want to drop $40 on the game, expanded edition or not. but I am interested at under $20.

I don't know if you bought Skyrim but, IMO, this game has a similar value...

Price of the game and the expanded edition seems to vary wildly. Here in the UK the price went very low for a time and now seems to have gone back up. I suspect the drop happens when a couple of companies are getting rid of their stock. I though you might be able to find the expanded edition for about the same price as the original. I paid very little for the original and, amazingly, just as little for my pre-order of the new version. It may be that enough pre-orders have arrived at this stage that the retailers know they are going to sell a reasonable number after all and have edged to price up.

I'll be re-buying Dark Arisen for sure, considering how much mileage I got out of the normal DD.

I forgot I should only play Dragon's Dogma on nights when I don't have work the next day. I was up to 2 am adventuring last night. I had another go at the dragon. I'm level 35 and am clearly too low level. I may have been able to kill it eventually but it would have taken hours.

The Wyrm you mean? Or was it a Wyvern?

Those sorts of fights are what make this game better than any Elder Scrolls for me. I've heard numerous folks complain about how tiresome dragon fights get in Skyrim. That means Bethesda did it wrong.

I still love fighting Cyclops and Chimera in Dragon's Dogma.

In fact, I think I'm going to drop playing new games and resume that for a while.

The Wyrm probably. The one on the way to shadow fort.

I was a little higher in level than you I think when I first fought it. Keeps taking over your A.I. companions. Friggin' pain. That battle started at sunset and lasted until sunrise, but I remained victorious.

...God damn I need to play this again tonight.

EDIT: So it turns out I ran out of steam with only two main story quests left, and now I'm ready for the last quest of the game. I double-checked on the intarwebs to be certain. This whole time I thought I was maybe halfway through.

I feel like I may start a second run through of this game some time this year, but at the same time...wow, so close to being finished.

I should also note that I need to remember to save often. I was killed by taking a wrong step and dropping down a cliff face in the darkness.

Ok I have a Portcrystal after the fight at the Bluemoon tower so where should I put it? At the tower or somewhere else?

Edit: I left it at the Tower. I'm sure I'll be back there. You can also pick it up and move it apparently.

One of the most disturbing sights in Dragon's Dogma:

Just lying there

Edit: A couple of pics from last night:

An intimidating start to an ogre fight. It ended a few seconds later when my Mage hit it with a lightening whip and it fell off the side of the stone bridge to it's death. The ogre plummeted into the gloom for miles with only the Notification of 8000+ xp to indicate when it hit bottom.

Ah, you're right. I was thinking those were trolls :).

Damn, you're right, those are trolls.

But you were still fighting a cyclops!

What are you guys on about? There are no trolls in Dragon's Dogma. Ogres are the small, furry crazy damage-dealing psychopaths that you usually find in enclosed spaces where your more vulnerable party members can't escape their wrath!
