iPhone Games Catch-All

Ridiculous fishing is out, and it is great.

Ridiculous fishing is out, and it is great.

Settle down, jonny. I've put in two hours since last night. I don't think it's great, but it's good fun. No context meant, but it feels like a polished webgame from the mid 2000s. Like their other game, Super Crate Box, I think they have great core gameplay design, but they keep it very simple and lean. I appreciated focused design, but I feel both titles lack an X factor that would elevate it from a base idea with a few small tweaks. I do like the art style and love the music.

Right now, the only problem I have with the game is fishes coming in from off screen. It feels cheap, and not random luck or challenging. The HUD can also get in the way while fishing, which is important on my small iPod screen.

Just my opinion. It feels like an arcade throwback, and caught my attention for a good 30 minutes last night, much more than most iOS games manage to do.

I'll be honest, I'm not very good at it yet despite having half of the unlocks. I think there's 6-7hrs worth of content here, so while I don't like it as much as you, I'd say it's worth the $2.99 price.

That's because it is

Man this game is really a double edged sword for me. They added async multi player and leaderboards which are huge for score chasing games like this..... Except that they added the ability to purchase additional muligans when you run out. That is a big WTF to me. Why have a leaderboard at all then.

For money.

Part of why you gotta love Ridiculous Fishing. They could have put in app purchases in, but didnt. I love that.

It's also $3 already.

jonny, i'm not sure I got the gist of that, is Ridiculous Fishing any good?

SSG 2 is still only a buck and has a ton of well polished content so I'm not trying to discourage people from getting it. Its just that the leader board could have meant something.

I've not played it, but I don't understand how the leaderboard becomes null because you can buy do overs? Seems like it would make very little difference in the standings. The best are always going to be on top, and the amount of people invested enough (and bad) at the game to spend lots of money on a leaderboard spot must be infinitesimal.

Sorry, i just think that free games or .99 games that let you buy your way through an experience are ruining things. 2.99 is chump change for a better experience. Forgive me for liking something guys.

Wow, I didn't believe what you were saying, and then I just looked for myself and saw it to be true. WTF.

Oh well, competing on global leaderboards is always an exercise in futility anyway. People cheat all the time, why not monetize it?

I was just poking fun for your double - double posts. In my mind you were so excited that you were posting everything twice.

Yeah, I would have just used it for competition against friends. Global leaderboards are scary.

Like EvilDead said, I think the double double posts are the subject of teasing, not you yourself.

I'm not sure you're in the majority. People are kinda losing their mind for this game. At the very least, the reviews are incredibly positive. It's good, I like it, and I'd be cool with playing it over and over. I'm not sure if I'm as in love with it as others, but it's pretty darned fun.

That's mainly why I posted my opinion. Twitterverse was going crazy for the game, and I felt it appropriate to bring some rational to the discussion.

The trailer for RF didn't really grab me that much, but the tagline did: "A Tale of Redemption" - does it feature much of a story? How is this redemption handled? I asked the dev and he said "Yes it has a story", but that was about all I got. Is there stuff to do besides fishing and shooting?

The story is conveyed via fake tweets to the fisherman's phone. They're just OK jokes and puns. So, nowhere close to a traditional tale. Everything during your fishing is the highlight. The rest takes a backseat. The story is fluff, the upgrades make me chuckle but are basically just '+1s', and there are some tech issues that make this a less than ideal portable game (forced tilt, no bkg app support).

Woot!

If you don't already have it, Super Mole Escape is now free during a content update. It's one of my favorite runners, and really an excellent arcade game.

So addictive! Love it.

I just got Gizmole's base stats fully upgraded. I love his speed and strength combo, and the new laser power-up gets really good when upgraded.

If you're playing Nimble Quest, I am using #GWJ as a guild tag, but if there is a preferred guild tag, let me know.

From the creators of Tiny Tower, Sky Burger and Pocket Planes comes Nimble Quest!

How had I not seen this until now! I love those games. Time to drop everything and pick this up.

I'll join #GWJ with you until someone says to do otherwise.

Like the rest of their games, you don't need to worry too much about paying real money for tokens (unless you want to support the developers) -- they will drop randomly as you play, and you get them as rewards for placing well in the arena, too.

You can level up the heroes through play or with the gems you collect through play. I am finding the ranged heroes easier to level up, but may pay in-game-currency to level some of the others after I earn enough gems in play to buy the buffs in the store.

I joined #GWJ as well. I was looking for a new iPhone game, since I pretty much finished Dungelot.

The recent, excellent game Bobbing is free for a limited time. Beyond the terrible name and weird main character, is really is quite an experience. It can be easy described as a gravity switching platformer, but it's more than the sum of its parts. Once you complete a level it goes straight into the next, with the upbeat music following you for one seamless trance of gameplay. Its fast pasted, but straight forward, design challenges you to think fast in the moment, often showing what's to come. It can be a blessing and a curse to think head of time, over-thinking and confusing yourself. It's a game I hate to put down: fun, addictive, and challenging.

I will admit I tried it and can't even tell when or how I'm advancing in the game, why I get some menus sometimes and others other times, or why I'll suddenly drop back to the menu in the middle of walking around. Did I run out of something? Is there a bar showing me running out of time somewhere? The one at the top doesn't seem to be that...

Dunno, all the other games by them I've felt like I got a pretty good grasp on what I do in it (or at least the basics) within a few minutes. This one just baffled me enough that I just uninstalled it. I never felt like I managed to do anything other than wander around without a clear goal other than "don't run into things."
