Holy S**t! Pope resigns

Bergoglio was one of the few Latin American Jesuits to push back against liberation theology.

Yeah, the Jesuit thing is an odd contradiction, guess you can get reactionaries, whatever the label, but JP2 and Benny worked systematically to undermine liberation theology and the Second Vatican Council. Anyone on the inside who has survived to be in contention is very much cut from the same cloth.

Jumping to conclusions? Seems like people are reading about the man, not the country.

I'll PM you.

Why?

Because sweet nothings don't count unless whispered.

I don't see why it'd be a private or personal matter. It's about how the values and stances of the Pope don't appear to be terribly different than those of the old Pope.
And, unless he's recently changed it, Cheeze doesn't allow people to PM him back, so any response Quintin would give would still be posted to this thread, defeating the purpose of a pm.

Its the first Pope not from Europe. Thats crazy change enough for them. Got to hand it to them for that at least. Extremely slow to change but consistently so.

For a religion on the decline you would think they would want to do this more often from all the hoopla it brought. But that would be like crazy crazy change^2.

Point of clarification.

There have been several non-European popes including Theodore I (Palestine), Constantine (Syria), and Gregory III (Syria).

Don't forget Saint Peter.

I hate conclaves.

My Argentine friend just sent me this. It's in Spanish, but google translate gives you a pretty good idea of what it is about. Pretty damning.

Basically, he named names including those of priests to be murdered by the Argentine military.

So did he PM you?

God damn it.

I did!

It was a nice couple of minutes there: the newly elected Pope was described as someone who lives a simple life after all this recent rumor of scandal concerning the inner workings of the Vatican.

Turns out now that we know more of the facts, not as much to be optimistic about. Still wouldn't call it business as usual or cut from the same cloth, though. Seeing a lot of descriptions of him as a compromise candidate.

I wouldn't call it business as usual either. The old pope merely obstructed child abuse investigations, the new pope possibly called in assassinations.

It's obviously early to tell, but his background in the Argentine dirty war makes me think he is going to be another Eugenio Pacelli.

"At first everyone's all like, 'You gotta get rid of pedophile priests!' So we elect a guy who's never touched a kid in his life, and they're still angry. Jesus Christ, what do these people want?"

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but do people realize this new guy in the pointy white hat only has 1 lung? My brain tells me there are jokes waiting to be had with that little fact, but I haven't had enough coffee yet.

That's where God goes when he's speaking through an infallible Pope.

Just playing devil's advocate, how many of the stories about Pope Francis actively taking part in aiding death squads have been confirmed by several non-partisan news organizations? Because I looked up the Argentinian journalist who has accused the pope of hiding political prisoners from human rights organizations, and guess which side of the Dirty War he was on? The Communist rebel side. Therefore, I can't take his book at face value without wondering if he doesn't have an ax to grind.

There are other stories coming out of the new pope helping people escape Argentina, petitioning the dictator to release two Jesuits, and hiding prisoners not from human rights investigators but the secret police. Here's my point - I think there needs to be more investigation done to see if Francis was working behind the scenes to subvert the dictatorship (just as many Church leaders did during WW II), or if he was taking turns giving prisoners the blow torch to the crotch treatment Smokin Aces style.

Yeah, I've jumped on to poke fun here, but we definitely need to give the stories a chance to settle for a couple days before taking any of them as, um, the gospel truth.

You just have to have faith, Yonder.

Yep, until it's been proven otherwise I'm going to assume that he had his lung removed so that he could smuggle infants out of Auschwitz in his chest cavity.
