NFL 2012-2013 Post-Super Bowl Offseason Thread

It now appears marketing to the fans is really taking over the personnel department in KC, as they have just signed Chase Daniel to compete for the back-up QB role. The guy was a great player for Mizzou, but I don't see how he fits into the plans for KC, at all.

Chase Daniel is a reasonable backup for Kansas City to sign. Where he fits in the plans is the #2 QB. Matt Cassel is not* going to remain on that roster, not with a $7.5 million salary.

I think the team hasn't released Cassel yet only because they wanted to be sure they could secure a replacement they found suitable first.

*: hopefully my factual statement of impending release turns out to be true this time, unlike with Albert.

Jets sign David Garrard.

Had the Chiefs not landed Alex Smith, I thought Garrard was a good veteran for them to pursue.

I think a healthy David Garrard beats out Mark Sanchez in training camp. Health is a concern, though, after back problems put an abrupt end to his Jacksonville run, and then the knee injury knocked him out of starter contention in Miami.

PFT says both the Browns and the Buccaneers are both exploring the possibility of acquiring Ryan Mallett.

Cleveland could use a passer like Mallett. The receiver cupboard isn't bare - Josh Gordon and Greg Little have ability, and TE Jordan Cameron is one of my under-the-radar guys, but Brandon Weeden can barely get the ball to them (and not for any lack of arm strength, but he's finding it hard to make NFL throws. It's not like lofting it up to Justin Blackmon after he's beaten some hapless Big 12 corner by two steps)

Cassel is totally gone. I never saw Daniel as a legitimate NFL QB. He's awfully short. I thought he kind of worked as a back-up to Brees, since they were the same height, so everything plays had already been designed with that in mind, and it would not be a huge difference. I think backing up the 6'4" Smith is a different situation.

I could also just be totally wrong on how much of a big deal his height is. He's listed as 6'0", but I had understood he was closer to 5'10" in reality. I also just might hate him because he is from Mizzou.

Jennings might actually stay in GreenBay after all if the demand drys up.

I always considered this a potential outcome as its always easier to stay with the team your comfortable with giving the Packers an advantage of getting for cheaper. Only problem was if a team came over the top with some ludicrous offer that you couldn't blame Jennings for taking and the Packers for not matching.

Peyton Hillis is also being looked at. The Jackson rumors are swirling also. I’ll believe the latter when it happens as I doubt it would unless its on some very reasonable money.

Woodson is apparently flying to meet the 49ers tomorrow :/

Man, Boldin to SF is big. I still think he has a few real good years in him.

Holy sh*t Titans making not one but two good free agent moves. Is this real life?

Ellerbe gone. Crap.

Yeah, and he got paid. Big time.

Ravens also released Bernard Pollard. Seems like they're freeing up money to bring Ed Reed back.

All I can say is the first day of free agency last year was a lot more fun as a Bucs fan.

I tried to tell some of my friends here in Boston that the Patriots should pursue Pollard just so he's not injuring them anymore. They wouldn't even let me get to the rationalization of the argument.

LB James Anderson is on the market, thanks mostly to the horrible contract the Panthers gave him. (Good for him; horrible for Carolina.)

He started at Sam for most of the past three years and did pretty well. Some lucky team will get a pretty good LB out of this.

Theres always practice.

Could mean they actually snipe some guys on the cheap.

Bears made two good moves IMO. TE Martellus Bennett (Giants) and OT Bushrod (Saints)

Bennett had 55 catches last year and seem to be a decent blocker. The stat I liked the most was 35 first downs.

Bushrod isn't a top 10 LT but he's an upgrade for our line. I think it was a good sign for the price 35mm for 5 years. With former Saint's OL coach Kromer being the new Bears OC. He should know Bushrod's strength and weakness.

Also Ryan Fitzpatrick was released from the Bills. I'm not sure what the Bills have planned to replace him.

Redskins pursuing Reggie Bush.

Wut?

I thought he signed with Detroit

No one? The plan was to save money not paying Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Rumor is NE low balled Welker and now Broncos are in the running.

Isn't Manning stealing Welker the closest he can get to stealing Giselle. Just the thought of Tom Brady angry makes me happy

Glad for that. The skins have some serious glaring weaknesses. RB is not one of them.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter
Former 49ers S Dashon Goldson agreed to terms on a five-year deal with Tampa Bay. Really. We're sure.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss that is totally OK with me. Somebody to mentor Barron as Ronde potentially rides off into the sunset.

Now some corners, please.

I hope Flacco enjoys going out in the first round of the playoffs.

Chiefs sign Donnie Avery. This is not a difference maker signing, ut I liked him while he was with the Rams. Seems like he was good last season with the Colts, and should be an upgrade from whatever the heck Breaston turned into.

Not making the playoffs? Thats allot of turnover in the roster.

Also credit Flacco for a good playoffs but hes hardly shown hes reliable in the regular season. I'm really interested to see where Baltimores Over/Under wins comes in at. I think its in the 10-10.5 range the last couple of years.

How are they going to get to the first round of the playoffs without any linebackers or safeties?

The #8 pick in the draft. I think they're looking to take Geno Smith.

Bushrod isn't a top 10 LT but he's an upgrade for our line.

Most starting LTs would be.

The Ravens are in for some rebuilding. Not unlike how the Patriots had a roster full of aging veterans at one point and rebuilt around young talent and became a Super Bowl team again.

Of course, it's not helping that they're losing some younger players too. Lewis, Reed, and Boldin, no sweat, but Kruger and Ellerbe, those aren't the guys you want walking out the door.

Baltimore will need to really hit on their draft picks over the next couple of years. There's no more room for Sergio Kindle or Jimmy Smith picks. And Courtney Upshaw needs to step up and fill one of those OLB spots.

The Twitter machine tells me that Wes Welker is now a Bronco.

I think that signing deserves the Facebook treatment.

Good for him. He never seemed appreciated in the Pats organization outside of Brady.

Broncos sign Wes Welker.

Really? With Decker and Thomas on the roster, I did not see that coming.

That is going to suck fantasy football-wise. Three highly-draftable receivers just got a downgrade. (Nice for Peyton Manning's value, though)
