[iOS/MOBILE] Boardgame Adaptations Catch-all

Now that the games have started you won't hear from us this is the poor state of iOS as a unified gaming platform on display.

(sent invite to cyrax, soon as he accepts I'll make the game)

Shush!

So just to express some of the ways game center is terrible

Everyone has two names, a 'real' name and a 'handle'. When you want to add a new friend you have to use the handle. That handle is not actually displayed in game invite window, but IS displayed in game once it starts. When inviting friends, you're looking at a list of real names. Getting that game started required 5 minutes of trying to correlate real names and handles so I could get the invites sent.

Le Havre's 8 crashes in the meantime sure didn't help matters.

As far as I can tell there's no way to change my 'real' name either, only the handle.

The only mitigation I can see is to change your status in game center to match your handle. That IS displayed on the game invite screen.

You actually can go in to change your Gamecenter real name, but they don't make it easy. I struggled through it a couple of weeks ago, so here you go:

Gamecenter -> Me tab -> Account: email@domain button -> View Account -> Edit Account Info

Or you can change your motto--next to name on your Me page within Game Center--to your user name, as many of us have done. But absolutely, you're not wrong that GC is horrible. The rest of us have just gotten past it.

Its a little jarring when everything else about iOS interface is so smooth and intuitive. They definitely had their C team working on it.

Apparently when it first shipped it's notifications completely ignored all OS level volume settings. So that loud trumpet(?) notifcation sound played no matter what.

Days of Wonder rebooted their PC/Android Small World Kickstarter. iOS update is currently under development, so this is purely for Android/PC. They're a lot smarter/clearer about their tiers this time too which should help them out.

They threw in rewards for iOS players too, so folks currently playing on the iPad can still benefit from throwing them some support.

So on Le Havre, when it is time to feed, do we all get the turn at the same time, or does it go in order?

Looks like it (annoyingly) goes in order

Yeah, a simultaneous push would be ideal.

They're strictly following the rules, which allows players with later turns to base their decision on how the others have payed.

But ya, still annoying.

I think I'm going to uninstall Le Havre after our game is complete. I like the game but when I try to hit play, a popup appears and opens the App Store. f*ck that.

Yea, for Puerto Rico. It annoys the sh*t out of me too

I'm all for marketing, but pop-ups are on the wrong side of the line. Annoying, intrusive, and it usually slows down an app for a short time.

I was thinking 'What are they talking about?' then I open Le Havre and fall victim to that perfectly timed jerk move. These Sage games have generally pretty poorly laid out UIs and bad programming. Le Havre crashed on me constantly while trying to set up an online game. I will probably ignore their future ports and hope that board game companies stop going to them or that they hire some better designers and spend more of their time and money on QA and bug fixing.

Who's been keeping up our Le Havre game? Turns shouldn't take a week to complete. If it's because of PAX, that's understandable. Let's get this thing rolling!

Maybe it was me? Didn't get a notification.

Le Havre is definitely a bit finicky with the notifications. I think we might just have to accept that this is a 6 month commitment.

It was stuck on me for several days because I didn't see a notification or on-icon bubble, but it looks like we're waiting on Rabbit now.

Not sure if this is exactly the right thread for this, but I tried out the SolForge beta over the weekend and I think I really liked it. No online MP yet since it's not actually out, but I think there's a lot of potential. It feels like Spectromancer meets any deck builder game, both of which I really like.

The 2.0 version of STONE AGE hit this week, and brings the game into universal/retina iPad glory.

Same with San Juan, although they messed it up so you can't zoom in on the cards and read them better. Get those bifocals out!

So I just picked up Reiner Knizia's Money since I've heard good things and it's on sale. I've read the rules and played one game versus the AI. Now how do I play against real people? I'm going to feel stupid when one of you explains that I've got to press the glaring something button that is eluding me.

According to iTunes, Money does not (yet?) support multiplayer.

Then I had better go write them a nuclear review.

.....the game has been released for three years? Please attempt to name a more lazy developer.

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE!

Eclipse for iPad just launched today (iTunes link)

I am assuming you've all been quiet because you're too busy playing Eclipse. Anyone interested in doing some multiplayer?

Chris Farrell has posted that the mp isn't great right about now and that for some reason they don't use GameCenter. Please post your experiences here; hopefully the developers will tweak the system.

It's pretty badass. Other than some minor UI glitches, and a small game play patch (below) BDC knocked it out of the park.

As for multiplayer, I can. There is a patch needed for the number of Outer tiles, since it's constantly set at 18, and it should fluctuate based on the number of players, so other than that, it's pretty sweet.

How many people would be up for it?
