Sunny and warm a few hours north on I 75. Birds were chirping when I left home today.

My job this morning. I had to prosecute and ask the court to lock up a woman in her fifties with obvious and significant mental health problems. She should be securely remanded, yes, but in a hospital, not a prison. I can only hope that the prison doctors are more human than the arsehole who dares to call himself a healthcare professional, from the lowest bidder, who provides medical and psych pre-assessments for the Police. This stain wouldn't even refer her for an assessment, despite the custody sergeant begging him to do so, and her solicitor, a woman I like and respect enormously, piling evidence on him about her client's past problems.

Nothing I could do, nothing to court could do. She was not fit to enter a plea; there has to be two psych reports and then a finding of fact hearing before the court can give a Hospital Order, which takes months. Two psychiatrists can section her under the Mental Health Act, but this guy wouldn't authorise the referral, just wanting to let the court deal with it. She is not safe to be out on her own, for her sake or that of the public, but prison?

I have never felt so ashamed to do my job as I did today.

Great. That's...that's awesome. Fantastic. Birthday boardgames tomorrow night. Made birthday treats to bring and I can't have any of them.

Screw that. Enjoy your birthday treats and make a commitment to lower your carbohydrate intake after that. One day isn't going to make any difference in your glycemic issues, but one happy day has a pretty solid effect on overall happiness.

F**k yes. I was going to say something like this, but without the knowledge that Mr. Coldstream has backing him up. Have fun, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

FWIW, my dad was diagnosed borderline diabetic in his 50s. I know he has to take his blood reading every day, but a change of diet (i.e. healthier) and regular exercise (a walk every day) was all it took to turn things around. He's in his 70s now and has never looked better.

Obviously I don't know what your situation is like, but I hope that can be encouraging. Good luck!

Herp derp edit: Oh yeah, happy birthday!

That's Dr Coldstream. Which means that cake is now a medically-advised plan of action for the birthday girl.

Yes (thank you, Coldstream - I would have beaten around the bush about IANAD, but you can cut right to the chase). Being diabetic doesn't mean NO BIRTHDAY CAKE. It means be careful with it. Yes, you can't have four pieces and wallow in it, but you can have a slice and enjoy yourself. Especially if you eat it with a meal that has a decent protein level to slow down the sugar-spike.

Also, next year, talk to me about some lower carb cakes that taste very good indeed. My daughter in law made me a no sugar added bacon chocolate cake that was amazing!

I think you should post that cake recipe now for the happiness and well-being of all Goodjers! That sounds fantastic.

Also, Happy Birthday, Amoebic!

Thanks all! Realistically, I know that moderation and the occasional allowance isn't going to do me in. My only concern is that discipline, moderation, and self-control are all things I'm absolutely horrible at. I've got a much higher success rate with an all or nothing approach.

Proper diet and exercise will solve a lot of my problems.

Also, low carb recipes welcome !

Spiderj: It's not your fault, try not to shoulder this one. Does the stain have a superior you could reach out to?

It actually came out of a mix. Pillsbury makes sugar free chocolate cake mixes. She added a packet of sugar free fudge pudding mix and a bunch of crumbled bacon, and believe it or not there is sugar free chocolate fudge frosting. She decorated the top with sugar free chocolate syrup and real bacon bits and no apologies. It was glorious.

The cake recipe I made for this last girls' birthday involved a red velvet cake mix. Replace the water in the recipe with a can of sugar free cherry pie filling. Bake it in a 9 x 13 flat pan and then top with a batch of sugar free white frosting with a block of low fat cream cheese beaten into it and decorated with some of the pie-cherries. Diets and tongues were happy, and there were no left-overs to tempt me later.

Remember, in both of these cases you still have to count in the carbs from the flour and stuff, but it's a lot lighter on the carb-budget this way.

Those are the lowest-friction versions in terms of time/process/baking skill. They do use Splenda. If you're trying to avoid that all together, I have other options, though those are a lot more work to carry out.

My PC. I not only lost my Far Cry 3 save and now the game isn't working and I can't uninstall it. What?

The discipline approach to sugar lowering works for some people, and not so well for others. You go with what works for you.

I'm not a really good at discipline either, and I'm an infamous hedonist to boot with limited EQ (or so my friends and relatives tell me). Discipline doesn't work for me either. What works is eating good stuff - really nice, tasty meals. That works for me, because I am an avowed foodie. Goes with the hedonist thing.

If you tell me to eat crappy versions of foods I like, and dangle sugary treats in front of me while visibly enjoying them, I am going to go nuts. I just can't do that to myself. Don't have the willpower. What I can do, is eat really good "exotic" food (they're actually normal around where I live) that are both tasty and awesome and have low sugar content naturally. No artificial sugar.

It's your body's way of telling you that it wants a change in cuisine. Sugar ain't the only flavor in town.

Maybe you can start a low-sugar cuisine cookery thread. Diabetes is a pretty common diagnosis, and we all could use less sugar in our food. With a lot of contributors, it should be easy to put together a whole month's worth of low sugar recipes (including desserts!) that also taste like gangbusters. I'd start one, but my username exudes an unseemly miasma detectable from half a continent away.

I liked your adobo thread.

Adobo!

Stomach flu.

Requesting to work from home due to winter storm and still getting called into the office. Worse, I didn't see the email until I was about ready to start from home which means I wasted 50 minutes making a lunch and driving in, and will likely waste another 30 minutes driving home early.

Eh, chalk it up as opportunity costs on your employers part

I was in the same boat, except I was holding off on even looking outside and seeing that nothing had stuck to the roads yet...

I stayed home anyway because I'm a wuss with a tiny car. Hopefully no one at work will mind.

It wasn't snowing as bad when I got closer to work, although looking out the window now it's certainly snowing as hard as it was when I left my apartment. I know it's not that far distance wise, but this seems to be a slow moving storm.

I can never tell if the person is intentionally being sh*tty or if they don't understand what R.I.P. stands for.

Still not sticking to the roads up here, but the thought of 4-5" overnight means I probably will skip my minis night

You know what saying I've never understood? "The exception that proves the rule."

However, as a member of the Glorious PC master race, I guess it's my duty to invoke that terrible saying now?

I also dislike, "it is what it is" but I digress.

Comes from an old meaning of "prove" that means "tests", rather than the modern meaning of "shows to be accurate".

They are just doing it wrong. R.I.P.I.P. Rest In Peace In Pieces.

Supposed to be meeting with the bank tomorrow to get the loan application going, but the seller for this house has been out of town for a funeral for the past few days and hasn't responded to any of the issues that were found during the inspection... stuff that we'd like to have addressed or at least acknowledged in the sale price since at least two of them could be several thousand dollars depending on how severe it is found to be once work starts.
So now we are treading water.
On the "it could be worse" side. One of the other houses we really liked was a short-sell... I just tried pulling it up and it is no longer for sale. Apparently the bank shot down the seller and it is now for rent at $1,600 a month. Kind of glad we didn't get our hearts set on that one.
Also on the loathe pile is my curiosity.
After some careful thought I've redacted this section. You don't get to pick your family.
Edit: To spare some cats...

Spoiler:

When in doubt don't Google how a co-worker's family member passed away unless you're ready to know a lot more than you wanted to.

Dammit, Rezzy, now I'm curious - despite not knowing your co-worker, their family member, or even you (particularly well)!

It was an 'accident.'

Spoiler:

If by 'accident' you mean getting shot by a farmer.

Spoiler:

After threatening to kill him and his son.

Spoiler:

After they found him hiding out in a neighbor's shed

Spoiler:

Because he was running from the Sheriffs that were hunting him

Spoiler:

Because of a drug related parole violation.

Hypothetically.
