Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Giant Thumbscast?

I should have posted this last week, but I gotta say that PS4 stream was yet another example of why Giant Bomb has become my primary gaming site. Even without Jeff there, everyone at this point has such a natural chemistry going that everything felt casual and genuinely hilarious when they made jokes, and occasionally there was an interesting observation or discussion that popped up, and nobody outstayed their welcome or talked over anyone else too much. Contrast this with - for example - Weekend Confirmed, IGN or Gametrailers where attempts at humour, insightful commentary or debate more often than not feels forced.

Granted, the crew never seems to really be interested in going into more in-depth or cerebral discussions, but I have places like Idle Thumbs for that. In terms of just a fun site akin to Gamespot in the old days, nothing seems to come close in quality for me.

I'd love to have GB/IT crossover episode. That would be interesting.

I would agree, but I don't want to see Bind_Evil go into a deep depression

Spoiler:

I will listen to this episode. We shall see.

Yeah, the chemistry is the main thing that keeps me drawn to the site. I like their approach to content as well but it really feels like a crew that not only works together but are genuine friends as well. I'm impressed how at least so far, CBSi has really left them alone to keep doing things as they did before.

Alright, I listened to that episode of Idle Thumbs with Brad and I still don't like that podcast enough to regularly listen, for the same reasons which are now a little clearer to me.

1. The guys aren't funny in the way I find people funny. They're crackin' up about Lara Croft ripping her face off to reveal a cartoonish skull, and it doesn't muster the faintest of smile to me. It's probably sh*tty of me to put it this way, so I apologize, but I prefer listening to normal guys that happen to like games a whole lot. These guys are just too nerdy for me to go out of my way to listen to weekly.

2. These guys make games, and as it turns out I don't like editorial from that perspective. When I hear other game creators on podcasts, guys like Ken Levine and Tim Schafer, they're usually pushing/discussing their own games, and their approaches to game design. When the Idle Thumbs guys talk sh*t about "inferior" game design (explicitly stated or not, I can hear it), it comes off as professionally discourteous.

The Lara Croft skull stuff harkens back to an earlier riff on a Halo 4 commercial, which is probably why they thought it was funnier than someone who hasn't listened to that episode.

at Blind's description of Idle Thimbs.

Sounds like you were listening to a different podcast. Or at least hadn't listened to the previous 80 episodes. Not saying you're wrong. But the things you say are unequivocally not funny require some context and knowing the people on the podcast through those previous 80 casts.

No. I've talked to people here about not liking that show before, and I was told to listen from the beginning, so I tried. I think I've listened to the first ten and then this newest one, and I never find them engaging. I know GWJ's favorite answer to "I don't like this" is "have some more this," but I'll give it another couple years before I try again.

You know you. It's not to your liking. I too have found IT over-analytical, overcritical, and just plain hipster on occasion. For me, I dig their sense of humor, friendship, tangents, and discussion about gaming I normally don't hear, and often don't think of.

I think it's odd that this particular criticism of Idle Thumbs comes up in a thread about a website that has a podcast that features Patrick Klepek.

Zing!

I'll trade Patrick for the Idle Thumbs theme song, even-up. Let's do this.

"Just plain hipster" has zero meaning aside from other-ing.

Much like Idle Thumbs, I still really like Patrick and what he does but the way in which he chooses to discuss things will sometimes grate on me. But not enough for me to not want to hear the other cool things he often has to say.

I like hearing about things Klepek likes. A lot of his criticisms, though, seem straight up pulled verbatim from the internet hive thinking, misconceptions and inaccuracies and all.

The Idle Thumbs share a similar humor to South Park and Giant Bomb. They just dive down the rabbit hole in terms of keeping up with ridiculous jokes / absurd ideas.

They are also always going to be pipe smoking beard strokers who like games. Some people don't like that and some people do like to dig incredibly deep in analyzing stuff. I don't think the IT guys are ever disrespectful of other games. If anything, they take games that people will often crap all over and find something incredibly interesting to praise.

Classic BombCast running strong this week. "Video Games? What are those?"

From allergies and bugs to oatmeal baths to shower shooters and more!

Fantastic so far

Agreed. I'm 35 minutes in and the only talk of games was Ryan trying to bring up Sim City in vain.

Yeah, loved Ryan's SimCity segueway that just fell flat. The others just rolled right on past it without even a hint of acknowledgement.

It was pretty hillarious.

I still manage to giggle every time I recall the episode a few weeks back where they discussed cassingles, which of course led to the comments about CDingles.

Edit: I should know by now that anything funny that happens on the Bombcast eventually ends up on youtube.

HEROIN LASERS!

I tend to listen to them as I fall asleep. I have no one but Brad to blame for the horrible nightmares I had last night.

Yeah, it's been fantastic so far (about 35min in).

Their talk about showers that spew non-water products was hilarious.

Brad had me rolling.

Ryan: Patrick, anything uh.. worth uh...
Jeff: WAIT.
Ryan: Jeff what's up?
Jeff: Trackmania Stadium.
Ryan: Nope. I don't wanna talk about Trackmania.
Jeff: It's in open beta.
Ryan: I cut off.. I cut off Brad when he started talking about Kingdom Rush."
Brad: "Ahhh! HA HAHA HA! Trackmania has been relegated to the tower defense ghetto!"

I dunno, something about his enthusiasm there really cracked me up.

Oh man, gotta timestamp for that?

"He pours it over his head OH MY GOD!" I lost it when this happened. The guy who sits across the hall from me looked at mt very confused.
