Android Games Catch-All

I've considered rooting my Fire HD, but have opted against it because it supposedly breaks Amazon Instant Video, and my toddler needs it for Dora.

So bear that in mind! If you want to use Amazon services (Video, perhaps books?), "rooting" may break a few things, meaning you'll have to "unroot" it again to use them. At least, that's how it worked on the previous generation Fire. I assume it works the same way.

Interesting, I was expecting one of you guys to have done it. To be fair to my gf I would've preferred a Nexus, but I'm already well invested in Amazon's eco system.

I tried both, but honestly I wouldn't recommend either one. Neither lasted more than a single play session for me.

Oh that's unfortunate : /

But hey, thanks for you feedback

I don't have any experience with Android Kindles, but in my experience the apps that don't work on rooted devices only have a problem if you let them know you're rooted. SuperSU, the elevating binary, prompts you when an app attempts to use rooted functions. If you don't grant it to an app then the root check passes and it works. If you grant it root, then it'll fail and give you an error. No idea if that's the case for Amazon apps, but you might want to spend a few minutes in the XDA-Devs forum to find out if it's as simple as that.

I just came across this on the iRacing forums. Sounds like you can root long enough to install Google Play, then unroot and not lose any functionality.

I run Dashmeter Pro on a Kindle Fire and it runs perfectly. You don't have to Jailbreak it, you have to give yourself root access, then you can install google play. You can turn the root off or on depending on what you want to do. If all you want to do is install google play and dashmeter pro, Root it, install the apps, then turn the root off. None of the other apps will be affected and you don't lose any default capability.

I did it myself and love it!

I started with this video to help me out:

Is there a thread discussing only the gated community of Kindle Fire games? If not, I'll have to start one; garion's free to "root" or what have you, but I'm not that eager to mix with the hoi-polloi.

Huh, good thinking. I decided not to root atm because side loading is so incredibly easy, but it'd be even easier if I rooted my Kindle to plop the Play Store in there and then switch it back. Thanks!

Gf got me a Fire HD. What's the best way to get my Play content on the device besides downloading apks?

Why root it? If you have another Android device you can simply use that to get the APK and then copy it to the Kindle and install. If not there are plenty of ways to get the APKs without rooting.

You will need to get something like ES File Explorer to install some apps.

That works for free apps, not for anything requiring Google Services (e.g. Gmail, Google+). Apps that are tied to the Google Play store may be problematic, too, if they need to verify they were purchased on the device.

Otherwise, APKs are pretty easy to side-load.

As an experiment, I backed up the RSS reader, "Press," last night and transferred it to my Kindle Fire HD. The thing installed just fine, but Press uniquely gives you the option of which Google Account to pick based on what's already set up on your phone. As you don't have a Google Account attached to your Kindle at an OS level, it couldn't find anything, and there's no way to bypass it (so far as I can tell).

So yeah, even though it's an app I purchased through Google Play, I was still able to install it on the Kindle Fire. But I couldn't run it. I'm sure it all depends on the app, so you may just have to try it!

The other advantage to running Google Play rather than sideloading is dealing with updates.

Had to do a factory reset to fix some weird behavior. Lost my level 12 puzzle agent character and can't seem to restore from data or sd card. Blargh. Ah well.

I would contact the Developer and see if they can fix that for you. Halfbrick was able to get all my Jetpack Joyride levels/stuffs? to my new phone, without needing the old one.

If you guys are interested in beta testing 10000000 email [email protected] and tell him GWJ sent you
Since this is a beta, please report any bugs using that email. He responds within 24 hrs.

Also, he's already aware the match 3 grid system could use some tweaking.

Question - is there suppose to be a 'rubber band' effect when moving the grids on screen? For example, when I try to create a match 3 sometimes the alignment is not exact they return to their previous positions. Simply put, do I have to clear other matches in order to get my expected outcome/reach my desired match 3?

Answer - So, when you release your finger, the game will say "whats the closest row/column I'm to, is there a match there? If there is it will seek to that position and match, if there isn't it will seek back home.

I think there is a bit of an issue there to be honest - I'd like to fix at some point, I think the detection could be better. I think the game should be smart enough to say "Oh, well actually the closest row is this one, which isn't a match…. but I'm pretty sure he meant to go to this one, but just missed it by a pixel, so I'll go there instead" I just haven't quite got it working right yet.

Awesome. Done.

I've been on a roguelike kick, so with some helpful suggestions and research, I've been trying the following games:

Infinite Dungeon - Crazy interface, but REALLY loving it, totally purchased.
Delver - This one is first person, but it's clicking and getting more fun. Totally worth it's low price.
Legends of Yore - Tons of fun, about to buy the full version.
Dweller - A bit more focused than a traditional roguelike, with quests and such, but a lot of fun.
Pixel Dungeon - Very early game, like an incomplete beta, but really fun so far.

It's nice, this is the first time I've done any serious gaming on my phone since I stopped having an iPhone ages ago. Great stuff.

Just wanted to chime in with these in case someone finds this helpful. Enjoy!

You might like Dungelot too. It's kind of a mix of a rogue-like and minesweeper. Definitely unique, and well-supported. There's a lite version too.

Wazhack is one of my favorites.

Sadly that chugged like hell on my OG EVO, so I'll have to wait for an upgrade to play it.

I'll be honest, I got really bored with this one fairly quickly. :/

Is that pronounced "Wazhaaaaaack"?

Yeah, Dungelot is a more puzzle-ly than rogue-like.

You know what? Screw that noise. If you don't like it, you are a poopy-face.

Good day, sir!

I must contest that! You don't know what you're talking about. Galactic Civilizations 2 is a lot more than pew-pew, though it does admittedly stand at the absolute top of the strategic 4x space game heap; being the unconstestedly bestest scifi game of all time, and absolutely not boring nor cookie-cutter. Perhaps you've only tried rubbish games like Distant Worlds and Space Empires?

But not Space Empires 5, they really got it right there!

Whoah, did Certis get a hold of your login or something.

Nah, just bein' funny.

Humble Android Bundle 5 it has some good ones in there.

FINAL FANTASY DIMENSIONS is on sell for $10. People seem to like it.

Definitely down with that Humble Android bundle. I had no idea there was a Linux version of Super Hexagon!

Got that bundle, No question. When I played Dungeon Defenders on my PS3, I thought it would make a nice mobile game.
