The Big Board-Gaming Catch-All

Dang it, I'm going to have to kick this one too. I just kicked Zombicide at the $220 level, not to mention Dungeon Roll, Odin's Ravens and War Stories.

I may have a problem.

Edit: Aaaand, kicked at the Lieutenant level.

Hopped in at the Lieutenant level myself.

Captain level was tempting though, wasn't it? If I hadn't kicked at the Idiotic level for Zombicide, I may have gone Captain on this one.

I had to go with the $100 Zombicide KS; I already have season 1, and I just couldn't justify $60 for Toxic City Mall (KS difference plus extra shipping).

I'd just finished a game of Last Night on Earth when Mono told me the Zombicide KS was up, so I was in a zombie mood. Other contributing factors included:
* I had missed the Season 1 Kickstarter altogether
* We had a lot of RavenCon guests saying they really wished we had Zombicide onsite
* Two guests in particular were egging me on
* The Mrs. was in an understanding mood

Given all that, the resulting pledge at Asinine level was rather inevitable.

I'm in the Zombicide ks for the Fugitive level. I could probably have just gone Inmate and bought TCM later, but decided to just get it over with and have everything ( eventually ) show up. I also put in for the two ( so far ) optionals. I was looking at Dungeon Roll, but I'm on the fence, though this kind of solo thing is exactly what I'm looking for in games.

I don't see a kickstarter for it, but the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is sounding interesting too.

Daaaaamn why is non-US shipping so expensive. Well I mean I know why it is, I'm just complaining rhetorically. I'll just buy Wings of Glory mats instead.

And I assume you're all pronouncing it lef-tenant.

Can someone explain the optionals to me? Not just for this, but for Kickstarters in general. You usually get an update saying "Add $xx to your pledge to get ABC extra". I looked into it, and see where you can change the dollar amount on your pledge, but at least for Zombicide there isn't a new pledge level specifying why you're adding money. Do you just bump your pledge up by $20 and hope they know which extra you were after?

Nice, I hadn't seen that, but it's added to the wishlist now!

Generally what you do is click the level you want, add the money for extras to that pledge level, and then they'll send out a backer survey after the Kickstarter is over where you specify what you want.

When they do the survey, depending on the number of extras they offer, there will either be a single line where you write in everything you added on (so you write "1 widget, 2 doodads"), or multiple lines asking "how many widgets did you pay for?" and "how many doodads did you pay for?".

Ah, cool. Thanks guys. Of course, now I may have to bump my pledge to get the optional minis...

Especially Fred of the Dead

Wow, I'm surprised that Sails of Glory has surpassed War Stories within hours of going live—$40k vs $30k. Who knew there was that much relative demand for a ship-of-the-line naval warfare game?

Yep, Fred the Trader is the one I was eying. I think I used to work with that guy.

More a supply issue. There are a billion WW2 games, but very few decent age of sail games.

That's what I figured, but I'm still pleasantly surprised how fast SoG hit its goal.

I can't wait to take my frigates out and do some barrel roles...oh wait.

I know I'm late... ok, WAY late to the party, but I picked up Talisman last weekend with a few of the expansions (Highlands, Blood Moon) and... woah. Beer and pretzels it may be, but it's a hell of a good time!

Well my miniatures budget is blown for the near future so this ships are all you Teneman.

6 Board Games that Ruined It for Everyone

Sails of Glory looks great, but at those prices I'll probably wait until after release. I saw a post from the developer saying that the starter box is around the size of War of the Ring, so I can kinda see why the production and shipping costs would be high.

I was sad when the suggested Settlers of Catan but then they suggested Power Grid and everything was okay.

I can't believe that they would suggest Settlers as a substitution for Risk. I see that one more as Axis & Allies. For those of us that need blood in our gaming, Settlers just won't do.

I vote for Eclipse. Plenty of blood to go around in that game, and it's actually fun, to boot. They should feel bad for suggesting Catan.

I'd suggest Small World as an alternative to Risk.

I wholly second this. Catan is a completely different style of game than Risk. Although that could be said about most of their choices.

Small World is indeed a better alternative to Risk on the light end. Settlers makes no sense. I mean, we're at the point now where we need to suggest alternatives to Settlers. Can't access cracked.com from work, but seems like a pretty shoddy article.

I was also expecting Small World as the alternative to Risk and was confused by Settlers. I do like the article overall though since it suggests a good selection of starter boardgames. I'm guessing that Settlers is there because every "gateway Eurogames" type list needs Settlers on it for some reason.
