It's Pile Madness

Pages

If this thread wasn't in games, I'm sure someone would think I'm talking about something completely different. So, grab your donut cushion and let go play some games!

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the Google doc I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

Sleeping Dogs

"Welcome to Hong Kong, a vibrant neon city teeming with life, whose exotic locations and busy streets hide one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the Triads. In this open world game, you play the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop trying to take down the Triads from the inside out. You'll have to prove yourself worthy as you fight your way up the organization, taking part in brutal criminal activities without blowing your cover. Torn between your loyalty to the badge and a criminal code of honor, you will risk everything as the lines between truth, loyalty and justice become permanently blurred." (sleepingdogs.net)

Okay, this is probably the last chance I have to make some decent progress on the pile before

A) New Releases start dropping
B) Baby stuff

So, here's the list:

Vanquish (Multi)
Bayonetta (Multi)
Sleeping Dogs (Multi)
Dishonored (Multi)

Alright.... I have a few:

Dishonored (PS3/multi) - a carryover from last month, I just finished the Golden Cat area.
TorchLight 2 (PC) - I was tooling around with it last month, but didn't commit. I'm 4 or 5 hours in.
The Longest Journey (PC) - I want to at least start it before the Kickstarter for a third installment finishes - depending on my initial impressions, I might kick in.

I am going with Mass Effect 3 on 360 (down for some mp!!) and Sleeping Dogs this month.

My games for the month:
Little Inferno (PC), Botanicula (multi), SPAZ (multi), Knights of Pen and Paper (iOS).

I'm about 2/3 done with Little Inferno, and have some grinding for equipment in Knights of Pen and Paper, so I expect both of those to drop for sure this month. And Botanicula is short. If SPAZ agrees with the MacBook (doubtful), I expect to make progress, but not complete it. If I can only play it on the PC, I may not get much past the tutorial.

Hoping to finish BioShock (PC/Multi) and Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty (PC) this month. Yay prepping for sequels/expansions!

Okay, so against my better judgment, I'm going to declare Dead Space again... I've been making progress since I started it, I've completed 4 chapters, but... I'm just slow as molasses when it comes to playing this game, not sure why.
I'm also declaring Mark of the Ninja, which I should complete within a week, two at the most. I've played eight levels so far, and aside from that bump in the road around level 3, I've learned to be patient, and am now enjoying it.
And Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 5 - Rise of the Pirate God. For good or for ill, I'll be done with the series.
Still debating about what else to declare. Think I'll try and finish off Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC... We'll see what else. My big issue is that I'm firmly under Guild Wars 2's spell. I just can't stop playing it these days, I'm having so much fun with other GWJ'ers and I really, really want at least one character to reach leve 80.

Yes! Hoping to finish Little King's Story before March 19, when Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate comes out and all bets are off.

For me this month of March will focus on Batman: Arkham Asylum and Bastion. January went 4 for 4 and February 3 for 3, so I'm hoping to keep the streak up. Going a little conservative with my picks as they are relatively short games, but I have a couple of projects I must finish this month and anything requiring a bigger gaming commitment would be unrealistic.

I'm carrying over Sleeping Dogs from last month. Got about half was through it and got distracted by Alan Wake. Also put me down for Heavy Rain on PS3

I'm going to carry over Deus Ex (PC) from last month, and also declare Joe Danger 2: The Movie (Multi), which I think I am pretty close on. It is also fantastic and you should play it.

My pile has grown quite a bit already this year, and it wasn't tiny at the end of last year, so I am going to start being aggressive about culling the less exciting games. To do that, I am going to run a heat of sorts. Here are the rules I'm setting for myself.

  • Every game in the pile is eligible
  • Choose a game at random with Backloggery's Fortune Cookie feature. No re-rolling, unless.
    • If there are multiple piles games in a series, and the fortune cookie chooses a later game, then choose the earliest game in the series instead (e.g. I have Assassin's Creed Revelations and Assassin's Creed III. If AC3 was chosen, choose ACR instead)
    • If is already a game you are putting a bunch of time into anyway.
  • Play upto the first two hours of the game. That should be enough to get a feel for the game.
  • Decide whether to drop it from the pile, or move it to the next round
  • If the game grabs you hardcore, keep playing if you like

So, first up...

So, two hours of DA:O it is. I've switched platforms on this game twice (first on 360, then PC, now back on 360), so I'm starting over, which I've been hesitant to do, since it's content I've seen a couple of times already. Two hours won't get me to new content, but it will get me through the origin section and into the meat of the game.

I'm going to have to clear off some of the games from the 360 sale. Halo wars, el shaddai, and hawx for me.

So I was looking through last month's thread in order to carry over the games I had planned on playing, and I had totally forgot I had listed Puzzle Agent. So, for now, this month is a carry over month. I'll attempt Puzzle Agent ( multi ) and the two adventure games I didn't get to Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring and Still Life ( both PC ).

Hemi, tell me what to play!

Puzzle Agent is pretty short -- five or six hours, or maybe a bit longer if you get stumped on one of the logic/math puzzles and avoid hints.

Have you played through all the origins before? Maybe trying a different one will help keep that opening section interesting.

I haven't. I played the Dwarf Commoner the first time I played on Xbox, and I played most of the Human Noble, then started Mage on PC. So that leaves Dwarf Noble, Dalish Elf and City Elf, I think. I was planning to play elf mage again, but I also kind of want to try Rogue, so maybe I'll give another origin a try. If nothing else, I'll round out some achievements, and I can decide which playthrough to continue later.

ALL OF THE GAMES!

I'll be doing Bioshock 2. If I finish it relatively quick I may do another game before Bioshock Infinite comes out but it's unlikely.

Okay, so I'm in a shooty-shoot-shooting mood, so put me down for Crysis (PC), please. I'll also declare Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (PS3) since it's already started and Mark of the Ninja (multi) since I caved when it went on this week's Steam sale.

That's enough declarations for now. I'm not mentioning Legend of Grimrock again until I've broken it down to a quivering pile of fear and submission.

How accurate is your backloggery?

Please put me down for bit.trip Runner (Multi).

Hmm, this is an interesting concept I might have to actually create a backloggery, though it does scare me to see all that I own.

The solution is to not put in everything you own!

You could cheat and put in mostly games you've completed like I do >_>

If it's eligible, Brütal Legend for the PC. I've owned it for the 360 for nearly 2 years now, but still don't have a 360. Just got the PC version, played 20 minutes, and am in love so far.

Also:
Sword of Vermilion (Genesis ...and technically multi, since I'm playing the emulated version on the PS2, and it's also on Virtual Console). I'm level 10 already.

Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (NDS) - it's nice to see Kyle Hyde again in this sequel to Hotel Dusk: Room 215 which only came to Japan and Europe.

Put me down for Trauma for PC

and

Metro 2033 for PC

I played some Renegade Ops the other day but I think I might add that to the "games I don't enjoy" pile. After about 30 minutes requiring zero skill I quit and don't think I'll be back to that one.

Tim

I had more gaming time and less game left than I thought. Little Inferno is done. (Seen the endgame, haven't found all the combos. Probably won't, either, but I got about 2/3 of them, and stopped because I was tired of waiting for packages to arrive, and I wanted to see the end.)

Seriously, just take an hour and start it. You don't have to input all your games in one sitting, but at least start putting games in, and tracking your progress. It'll allow you to have some idea of the road to come and, a bit further down the road, some idea of how far you've come. I only opened my backloggery account a few months ago (if that), and aside from the initial shock of the immensity of it, it's been a positive experience so far.

Yeah, going to have to +1 on Eleima on this one. Backloggery is pretty cool for just keeping track of games you own that you may not have gotten to yet. Just as long as you keep in mind that you don't have to live and die by the backloggery account (Lord knows I'd be proper screwed if I took it that seriously), the site can be a decent motivator for burning through games you've had sitting out for awhile. And the fortune cookie feature is great for those times when you just don't know what you want to play.

Skyrim is taking way too long so I'm taking it out of rotation. Here are my March games:

Mass Effect 2

The Walking Dead

Saints Row 3

I'm going to finish Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (360) and Happy Wars (XBLA) this month. Maybe Call of Duty: Black Ops (360)

I hate to say it, but you really didn't pick the shortest games! Mass Effect will take you at least 25 hours, Saints Row the Third, perhaps 25-30+ (depending on how often you let yourself get sidetracked). Walking Dead you can finish in 10-15 hours, though. Those are some quality games, though, you're in for a lot of fun!!

Agreed, I use the backloggery as a guideline. If I want to tell the fortune cookie to go eat itself, then I go play whatever I want. I maintain the backlog for positive reinforcement. There's nothing like hitting the 3 games beat/completed in a row and getting that "on fire" icon.
