Boston, MA Area GwJr's

What? You're all nuts, Market Basketers and newspeople. I'm loading up the Jeep, heading to Vermont, and camping in an unheated cabin for the next 3 days. Storm? Pshaw.

Also: I'm totally going skiing backcountry! Storm? Yay!

My office is opening, but they said an early release is "very likely." The weather line wasn't clear whether or not the time off would come out of our leave or be paid like a holiday.

The tricky thing is, we have a ceremony of sorts tomorrow (I work in immigration) so people are scheduled to come from all around the state at 9 tomorrow morning. They were supposed to be scattered across 9, 11, and 1. I really think they should've scuttled the whole thing.

Considering the snow is supposed to start by morning, that would've been wise :\

Our office (in Nashua) is on "use your judgement", and they figured out how to get our Support desk people to be able to work from home.

I'm not even planning on trying to move the car until Saturday at the earliest

Hoping power holds out, mainly because I'm not a fan of untoasted bread and cold soup, but also because I'm smack-dab in the middle of the 24"+ zone :/

Eh, even if power goes out, we've got plenty of games to play through.

I have a similar situation. We were told that it was a judgement thing and now they are closing at noon. I live 5 minutes away so it makes no difference to me.

I'm looking forward to arkham horror/CAH by candlelight with the neighbors if we lose power.

Good to know as one of my friends was suggesting we check this out. Definitely not interested in checking it out now.

It might have changed, but yeah, it was really hard to meet people there. There's a lot of board games. They seemed nice enough on the board games, if a bit sweary.

Ok, this is only tangentially related to this thread, but I figured what the hell. I am 40 years old, and the thought of going to a location to meet complete strangers to play a game scares the ever loving sh*t out of me. Is that normal? I have never considered myself to to suffer from social anxiety but the more I have pursued this idea I am finding a real conflict between my rational brain that is very interested in furthering this idea, and my emotional response of anxiousness and doubt about moving forward with the idea. I am super impressed by the accepting and generous nature of those who are also interested in doing this and have gone so far as to even extend invitations. I think this has what has me thinking my own response may not be "normal".

Well yeah, same here, playing a game is a pretty full on way to meet people, instead of buying a beer and talking shop at a meetup. There's more to it, like you don't want to look like you are playing too much to win, or look stupid, you know.

Anyone playing games today? It seems like there's not much else to do. I'm looking for people to play some pc games or forza with. Also, I'ld like to try and set up a game night at a that beer hall if people want? I haven't been around on gwj for a while, but hell if people are interested, I'll give it a shot. I'm McStabWithLies on Steam, and McStabWifLies on Xbox Live.

I guess my wall of text was a bit much, but I'd be up for meeting some Boston GJWers when ever the next event comes up?

As it turns out, my Friday night opened up recently, and I am itching to play some games. Does anyone else have the availability and interest in getting together somewhere tonight?

Do we, as Boston'ish GWJ'ers, have a google document thingy stating where we live? I know I don't live in Boston, and unless you consider an hour away close, I don't live close

I don't think there is one. I know there was, at one point, a Google Map with GWJer locations, but I haven't seen it linked in a long time. Personally, I am out by Worcester, but I work in Lexington, so on weekdays I am not far from the city after work.

So it looks like for those near Plainville, MA, Battlegrounds is running a Pathfinder Society event every Sunday from like 2-6pm. I haven't been yet but may try to swing by this Sunday (weather permitting). Also they have Open gaming on Saturdays all day. I would be intersted in trying to set up an RPG group here on Sat nights or Sat mornings if the Pathfinder thing doesn't work out.

I am so unfamiliar with the current systems, it would be nice to have someone who could DM and help organize a game that has some experience.

Have you had any further thoughts about this? I'm in Attleboro, just south of Plainville, and I haven't RPed in years since it's so tough to find a place, time&group that works out. I'm not in a position to game for eight hours on a Tuesday or some similarly crazy thing.

I'd even be willing to host if it is not too far out of the way for a few folks, or even GM something - though I am far, far out of the loop on that stuff.

I think I've posted before in the thread, but I'm in Lowell, and usually willing to spend up to an hour in the car if gaming will be involved.

Late notice, but I'll be heading to Wachusett this evening. If any Goodjers are thinking of a late-day ski trip, drop me a PM and we can meet up, ski some groomers, and share a pint!

I'm free for games all this Saturday if anyone is interested? Add me on Steam or whatever.

Random question for MA GWJers. Im so sick of my co-workers bringing Dunkin Donuts on Fridays. I've never had a worse donut anywhere. Are there any GOOD donut shops in MA? Ive tried a few local shops that were equally stale and starchy, as if they've all given up, but I havent tried Honey Dew or Honey Dip.

Thoughts?

Edit: This is about the donuts themselves, not coffee, bagels, or breakfast sandwiches.

Pixel, depends on where you are.

In Lowell, we have an AWESOME donut place called Top Donut. Two locations within 2 miles of each other, cash only, and Female Doggoin donuts.

Not sure about anywhere else in the state though

I can't think of a place who's donut's stand out from Dunkin's around here.

Anna's Donuts in West Roxbury. They are the best in the city, full stop.

I love Heav'nly Donuts, but honestly I like their breakfast and lunch sandwiches more than the actual donuts. Which isn't to say the donuts are bad, I just effing LOVE their sandwiches. Sausage egg and cheese, turkey club, tuna melt...well, I know I'll be leaving a little early tomorrow. One's within walking distance!

I don't know MA's layout yet so I don't know if any of those locations would work for you.

It's weird, the Dunkin' Donuts here are a lot worse than the few I've been to down south.

Heavenly Donuts appears to be no further south than Salem. I might check them out next time I'm up there.

If you're ever in RI, "Allie's donuts" is the bomb.

PAX East Donut Exchange?

The trick is to find one of the rare good dunkin donuts. There are a few left that still do fresh local baking, and the difference from the trucked in "extended life donuts" (dunkin's actual internal term) is huge. The south weymouth location (single highest sales of any dunkin on the planet) is the only one I know of, but I have heard there are others.

I'll toss my hat in the ring. I moved to Mansfield, MA originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I'm 42, lifelong gamer. Played everything in my youth; AD&D, Top Secret, Twilight 2000, Palladium/Rift, you name it. My heart is really with Cyberpunk (R. Talsorian), but I love a mean Shadowrun campaign too. Got into Magic in Alpha, played it long enough to end up with enough cards to sell for a down payment on a house.

Anyways, I'd be interested in finding out if there is a local group getting together for a regular game. I have some co-workers that might also be interested.

see you at PAX

Welcome la_Rapiere!

So I'm thinking about swinging by Micro Center this weekend to pick some stuff up - anyone want to get together for lunch/some beers in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area at some point Saturday afternoon?

Sounds good, I think. Maybe the mead hall or something? I'm in Inman square.

Hey, nifty. That's practically in my South Easton-home's back yard. We certainly ought to get together for some games.

Also, assuming you're planning to drive in/out of Boston for PAX Friday & Saturday, I'd be happy to share a ride.

Ohlin's in Belmont is good, as is Verna's on Mass Ave near Davis.

Hey, welcome to the area! I'm not far from you in Attleboro (15-20 mins?). I've been thinking about getting back into RPGs for a little while now but nothing has really materialized.
It's been a long time but I'd be most interested in regularly hosting and doing GM duties as I need a new creative outlet. Call of Cthulhu is my first love, but I have some old-school D&D history too. My wife would probably be interested as well if the system were a more 'rules-lite' sort of thing. Since adult life can be kind of hectic I'd like to set up some kind of mechanism that allows a little more drop-in/drop-out play so people can stick with it without having to be deeply committed. Any interest?

There's also a newish game called Kuro which looks interesting. Futuristic Japanese Horror. Neat.
