Total War: Rome 2 Catch-All

Total War: Rome 2 is officially coming in 2013! They improved the franchise significantly with Shogun 2, so I'm excited.

Awesome.

And then after this they can make a proper medieval game again.

In!

This is what I've been waiting for! I wonder what the time period for this is? The first RTW was late republic/early empire. Do you play Roman factions like in RTW or a united Rome? They mention fighting Carthage in the previews, so that indicates mid-republic or so. They also mention the Roman Emperor, sounds like it'll start around the same time of RTW and go a bit further.

Awfully tempted.

If it's anything like Shogun 2, they'll cover a lot of time periods with DLC. Shogun 2 had the initial middle period then added Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai later as DLC. They did a superb job with the DLC adding new content and fixing a few issues.

I should probably expand on my excitement. The Roman period is the historical period I'm most fascinated with, and Rome is the only Total War game I've ever ended up actually buying despite seriously checking out all of them. So I've been keenly anticipating this since they started remaking their older titles.

I would assume that it would be pretty much like the original, so mid/late-republic to the peak of the empire, then the fall in an expansion.

I can't even express how excited this makes me. RTW is one of my favorite games and I was so hoping it was getting the sequel treatment next. Medieval2 was nice and all, but there's just something I love about big battles in the Roman era.

Sweet! Played the first Shogun back in the day. Of the sequels only Rome really had my interest. It had the best "empire" feel to it versus most of the other games which tended to be very heavy on the pike and shot (and bad AI).

Seconded.

Trimvirated.

My all time favorite strategy game. As long as they have those testosterone-oozing prebattle speeches, I have no doubt this will be worth my mandated preorder.

I don't know. The prospect of RTW2 really makes me excited...... but reading the RPS demo impressions and feature lists I'm not sure I like the development. They want to focus on Legions as 'characters' with skills, experience and histories - something that feels like a change akin to Dawn of War 2 from Dawn of War.

My choice quote from the article:

RPS[/url]]In theory, this means a little less micromanagement and “fewer but more significant battles” as vast armies go to it, though I’m assured unit diversity and the essential rock, paper, scissors thinking very much remains. It also means those legions, being more enduring, generate their own history – gaining new traits and perks as they win or lose great battles, their behaviour and abilities reflecting their experiences to date.

Seems awesome to me.

Here's the demo impressions in question.

Considering that unit micro-management is probably the weakest part of RTW, I think the change has serious potential.

I like how RPS dealt with scarcity of screenshots at their disposal in the dev interview.

Awesome news! Looking forward to this one!

And..I agree, love to see Medieval done again

Actually, I think the Legion focus is appropriate, as there were more differences between legions than just weapons and training. History was a big deal, as was the composition and provincial origin of the legion. There were even barbarian elements hired into legions, and later legions that consisted almost entirely of non-citizens, and were involved in revolts as often as not. Some of them changed sides in battles, I think. I could see that being *very* interesting.

Me too.

Oh very cool! I really enjoy Total War Shogun 2 at the moment and definitely see myself getting into this one too. 2013 looks like an awesome year so far for games.

I totally dig the focus on Legions as well. It adds a ton of historical flavor. I wonder how it will transfer over to the other factions though. I also really dig "fewer but more significant battles" actually, sometimes the Total War games have too many battles IMO. Having every battle a Cannae or Alesia sounds awesome.

I'm so pumped. I wish they didn't announce it so early.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012... ha!

A new trailer went up a couple days ago, and RPS posted about it today. The live action stuff is... interesting.

Want....so....much.....

The real question is, can I name my elephant, Stampy?

Give me back my legions!

Hey, I remember playing it in Rome 1. Didn't look quite as good.

Still, it raises a lot of questions about how are they actually going to implement that cinematic cam without it becoming cheap gimmick or, worse yet, constant distraction.

10 minutes of actual pre-alpha gameplay footage of The Battle of Teutoburg Forest.

It's looks fantastic, but I really hope those unit cards are just place holders.

Jumping back into Shogun hardcore after watching that Teutoburg Forest walkthrough. Only concern I have is that they still haven't showed us the campaign map at all. I'm hoping that's because its getting a drastic overhaul from Shogun, I'd like them to mess with the formula a little bit for this one.

September 3rd, 2013!

All pre-orders will get the first DLC (The Greek States) for free. The DLC adds 3 playable factions; Athens, Epirus, and Sparta.

And of course the obligatory Collector's Edition.

The Total War™: ROME II Collector’s Edition will be produced in a single, extremely limited run; only 22,000 individually numbered copies will be manufactured.

The CE contains a wealth of bespoke, Roman-themed games and items, bound in a leather-effect presentation box, complete with gold logo and magnetic closure; including:

•Numbered copy of Total War™: ROME II ◦ The most ambitious and expansive game in the Total War™ series to date, ROME II brings the statecraft, politics, intrigue, diplomacy and epic battles of the ancient world to life in thrilling detail. This version comes in a debossed Steelbook™ case, laser-etched with your unique collector’s number in Roman numerals.

•Tabula set ◦ The Roman forerunner to Backgammon, this Tabula set comprises 30 bone-effect game-pieces supplied in their own burlap drawstring bag, while the board is built into the base of the Collector’s Edition box.

•Tesserae Dice ◦ Three replica bone-effect dice for use in a variety of games. The design is based on original Roman Tesserae, found at the archaeological site of Herculaneum.

•Total War Cards™: PUNIC WARS ◦ Designed from the ground up to echo elements from ROME II, Total War Cards is a game of skill and luck for two players. Involving combat, territorial control, resource management and technological development, PUNIC WARS consists of 58 high-quality playing cards and a game-board printed with the PUNIC WARS tech-tree.

•Canvas Campaign Map ◦ A reminder of the worlds you must conquer, this ribbon-tied canvas map depicts each of the 57 provinces of the ROME II campaign.

•Roman Onager ◦ A complete, fully-functional Onager, or Roman siege catapult. This easy-to-assemble kit is constructed from weathered wood and steel, measures 26cm x 12cm x 12cm, and is capable of unleashing mall projectiles at a variety of inanimate objects which may have affronted the glory of your empire.

While very cool, I nearly choked when I saw the $155 price tag on that. I wish they had a version for half that price with only the catapult and maybe the map. I'd grab that up faster than you could say Testudo.

I'm not going to be able to justify buying this game until a big Steam Sale. Even after 150 hours or whatever in Shogun 2, I still feel like I've only scratched the surface of that game. So, until the game is cheap, I'll probably just have to stick with playing that whenever I get the Total War itch.

Really looking forward to this. Along with Medieval (knights!) and Empire (artillery!), Roman (Legions!) is a favorite time period of mine.

I was thinking about getting the collectors edition through Amazon since I have prime, but then read you can only get it from the CA store. Shipping to the states is an additional $25. All in all too expensive for my taste though I will preorder the regular edition.
