Wii U Catch-All

All right--ZombiU edition get! Adding all of you crazies to my friend list now :)

Play some ZombiU when you get a shot. It's a little intimidating (and I know you scare off easily) but super rewarding.

Dafuq you mean I scare off easily? You must have me confused with someone else.

Just a little quick to lose interest...without the proper motivation, that is.

Just lost my best survivor yet a dancer lady. She lasted two hours and racked up 57 kills for a score of 2500 or so. She burned to death because I threw a molotov against the wall in a panic, so I won't be able to get the ammo off her body.

In a huge surprise, I think I'm actually looking forward to Lego City Undercover more than Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Don't get me wrong, MH3U will see a lot more time right out of the gate, but it's a known quantity. I'm really curious to see what TT has done with a bit more rope. Three weeks can't go by fast enough... even though I do hope to finish ZombiU and possibly Tomb Raider or Crysis 3 in those three weeks.

I've been neglecting my ZombiU duties. I was too busy with Black Ops II on the 360. Now that the new map hype is over for me, I think it's time to start killing things that are already dead.

BTW, thanks for the friend invites!

I just added a whole bunch of people from the list.

The friend request button is greyed out for some people. Does that mean that they have set it not to allow requests in some way? Maybe they proactively blocked me!

Some bullets from an interview from the Lego City Undercover guy by NintendoLife:

- around 200 vehicles
- voice-work from Adam Burton, Josh Robert Thomson, Peter Serafinowicz and more
- roughly one third of the game must be completed to unlock the entire city
- almost full camera control with the right-stick
- this becomes more limited and fixed within buildings or missions areas
- expect many different parodies
- studs are earned by building objects, rather than smashing them
- breaking apart every piece of LEGO will earn you bricks
- 65 Super Builds in total
- some are necessary to further the game while others are side elements
- takes about 4-5 hours to reach the fifth of 15 chapters
- typical player will need around 15-20 hours to complete the story chapters
- expect a similar period once again to find and unlock all collectibles for 100%
- GamePad is used to scan for clues using the screen and gyroscope only
- receive calls and instructions on the screen and through the controller's speakers
- map doesn't allow for manual tagging of locations
- unlockable camera which can take screenshots to post to Miiverse

This may actually be the first Lego game I buy, it sounds like a lot of fun. Hopefully the two girls (five and seven years old) will enjoy it too!

I'm in the same boat, Rallick. And I'd make a joke about little girls but that's wildly inappropriate, even for me.

So, how do these LEGO games work? Do you get to build your own stuff, or are you basically collecting bricks to buy stuff out of a catalog?

Gaaahhhhh I haven't had any time this week to hop on the damn WiiU except to set it up and play like 5 minutes of ZombiU.

I've played the Star Wars LEGO game on the Wii and my girls liked that, but they like Star Wars as a franchise in general, so it wasn't too much of a stretch.

You go around collecting little nibs, and sometimes there's piles of lego blocks which you can push a button to quick assemble into whatever it is.

You don't really build your own creations that much (if at all?) You don't buy things out of a catalog either, as far as I know. I'm sorry if I'm making it sound lame, it's actually not. It's just that the games are not focused around actually freely building with LEGO, as it is playing in a LEGO world.

That seems a little odd to me. Then again, I was never the sort of kid to follow the instructions that came with my LEGOs.

I've always been put off by the focus on Lego games being the franchises rather than the Lego part, and the simplicity. The open world hopefully addresses the simplicity and it's not licensed so they have total creative freedom. I'll see if they take advantage.

I was about to say something about how Lego-style building isn't really suited to the video game medium, and how it's probably best that the Lego games focus on being good Lego-themed video games rather than being second-rate virtual Lego bricks.

Then I remembered Minecraft, which pretty much disproves the whole thesis.

(But I'm posting anyway because I don't have a tag yet.)

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts is closer to the Lego experience, I think. Minecraft is a little too freeform. Both amazing games, of course.

Now we're getting a little off topic, but did anyone try the LEGO MMO that was out I want to say a year or two ago? It had a component where you could build your own house, but I never tried anything but the demo, so I never saw that part. I wonder if that had more building aspect to it. Ah well, we'll never know now, because it was shuttered already.

Well, that thread died quick.

I bought LEGO Universe and once you become strong enough to fight the dragons by yourself, the game became boring. I could never save enough karma to buy a full set of Level 3 armor.

I have the strangest problem with my Gamepad. It seems to get tired of the outlets it uses to charge. Like, I have it connected to the multiplug behind my desk overnight, and the next day after playing for a while I stick it back on the cradle and it won't charge. I switch the power cord from that multiplug to the one behind the TV, and it charges. If I stick it back in the original multiplug, it works. Super weird. I have needed to replace both of these strips for years, so maybe this is a byproduct of that. But I don't remember this happening when I was playing NSMBU.

Sent out a few friend requests. I think I did it right, but time will tell. My Nintendo Network ID is Rallick, but I haven't posted anything yet. Also, the only games I have are Nintendo Land and Just Dance 4 (regular Wii edition) for the girls, so nothing to play with others just yet.

Yes, for the girls. I would never stoop to dancing like a loon in front of my TV. Or using the exercise module of the game. Definitely not.

Welcome to the club of secret Just Dancers with daughters...

Wii Just Danced, officer, I swear!

Sorry.

A friend of mine played it a bit in the beta. He said the building function was too clunky and unintuitive to be fun. I saw a bit of the general gameplay. The most interesting thing about it was it was a massively multiplayer platformer of all things. Sure, there was some arcadey combat in there and quests and such, but the core of the game seemed to be about exploration, terrain traversal, and jumping puzzles.

Did anyone do anything with the google chrome maps lego thing?

I have a question about using regular headphones on the WiiU gamepad. I've just plugged a pair in while getting ready to play ZombiU last night and the volume seemed to fluctuate between being either really low or super loud. For instance, the guy communicating to me through the PA system would be barely audible (to the point where I just turned on subtitles) at one point, then at another it was like I was holding the PA speaker right up to my ear. It's worth noting I had the volume on the gamepad turned up all the way.

Is that just normal for the specific game, or does the volume always fluctuate when using the gamepad?

I haven't seen that, but I haven't played with headphones. Full volume is louder than I like with that game though.

Well, when not using the headphones I tend to have the gamepad turned down, but I specifically set up the game to play all the audio through the gamepad only (it's a setting in Audio, if you didn't see it before) since the wife was sleeping.

Did you set the Gamepad to output surround or stereo? The Gamepad itself has different independent audio output settings than the Wii U, maybe you were set to surround which might explain why you didn't hear the voice, if its panned to the center channel... Try it set to stereo and see if it still is quiet.

Oh, where do you set that at? I just did it in the game itself. There's a separate area for setting up the sound on the gamepad?

In the Master Wii U System Settings there is a "TV" tab, where you can select the "TV Audio-Output Type". This will set the console's output to Surround, Stereo or Mono.

Further down the row there is a Wii U GamePad tab, and there you can choose "Select GamePad Audio-Output Type" and likewise change the output to Surround, Stereo or Mono.

Cool--I'll check it out when I get home from work today. Thanks!
