Tomb Raider reboot

Looks like the rest of the reviews are out. It seems to be doing well.

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

Just came to post the same. Polygon gave it a 9:

Sit back down or I'm crashing this car into that pile of rebar until you get impaled by it.

I mentioned it a few pages back, but I saw a similar gif from TR. I can see it upsetting a few people.

So it's a good Uncharted game?

You think at some point she would grab a coat instead of sticking with the tank top.

Coats tend to de-emphasize breasts, though.

Well to be fair Uncharted is really just a good Tomb Raider game.

Surprised by the great reception so far. Too bad it comes out on Simcity day and a few weeks before Bioshock. Will be looking to get it down the line though.

That would be great. I liked the idea of the Uncharted games, but the "exploration" felt too clunky and restrained to a specific path and the gun play was poor. TR sounds like it addresses those frustrations.

Which is just a variation on Mario 64.

I think that's a fallacy. They're thematically similar but very different in their focus, until now I guess.

Could you expand on that? I have to admit that I've never played an Uncharted game, since they're all on PS3 and I don't have one.

At the very least, the Uncharted games (I've only played 1 & 2) aren't nearly as puzzle-focused as the Tomb Raider games.

It's very simple: Uncharted is Nicholas Cage's National Treasure. Tomb Raider, when it's good, is all the action and discovery/puzzle scenes in the three Indiana Jones movies.

Uncharted is a very bad Tomb Raider game. Actually, it's a bad Tomb Raider game mixed with a bad Gears of War game, with some really good cutscenes thrown in periodically.

I'm glad the initial reviews are coming in good for this one. I will now tune out until I get around to picking it up.

I think Uncharted is a shooter with a big emphasis on story, plus a sprinkling of light platforming / puzzle solving elements to break up the pace. Tomb Raider (the good ones anyway) are the opposite. They're primarily puzzle platformers with a few combat encounters here and there. TR's combat has usually been as underdeveloped as Uncharted's platforming.

Okay, so what is National Treasure like, because I haven't seen that.

Okay, I guess I'm satisfied with having missed Uncharted, then, because it sounds like less of what I like and more of what I don't. And I'm not sure I agree with the idea that the new TR will be like that. Maybe a bit of a mix, but the videos I've seen don't show an excessive level of combat compared to the rest of the Crystal Dynamics releases.

It's an up-market version of The Librarian

In fact, the first Uncharted was pretty good and the second, IMO, was excellent... but the general trend throughout was to be more shooty and combaty from Uncharted 1 to 3.

Don't say that. I like The Librarian!

Oh! You mean [em]Nancy[/em]!

This part of the Polygon review gives me hope:

While Tomb Raider starts with Lara's journey from regular person to "survivor," most of that transformation takes place in the narrow first few hours. As Lara pushed through narrow caves, crawled along ledges, killed her first animal and scavenged for parts with often minimal input from me, I worried that the whole game would be like this: heavily cinematic, low on actual interaction, and full of inoffensive but unappealing quick time events. Those fears proved unfounded.

That's something I've been thinking about. They've set up the island they get marooned on as some kind of Bermuda triangle thing, so there's going to be some mystery to solve beyond just surviving. There's got to be some hook onto weird and wonderful ancient mysteries and legends.

AOL Music has Jason Graves' full soundtrack album available for streaming.

The Revision3 review said the plot took many notes from LOST.

The plot seems almost exactly like Arrow, the TV version of Green Arrow.

Yeah, it's had that vibe since the beginning.

I think up-market just means bigger budget. The Librarian series is at least as good as National Treasure.

All the scores you want!

I will admit, the great reviews have moved me from "Meh" to "Hmmm."

FTFM

So you haven't watched any of the videos? There are a few lengthy videos of the starting hub area. I'd recommend checking out that before you purchase based on reviews.

The reviews have moved me from "I doubt it will happen, but this had better not be an epic fail pre-order like A:CM was" to "I am really looking forward to this game".
