Let's talk anime.

Strangely, 5cm is the one Makoto Shinkai movie I still haven't seen. I was blown away by Voices From a Distant Star... and then my mind was blown further when I found out he basically did the whole thing on his home pc, mostly on his own.

Teaser for the new GITS:Arise is out !! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb1c-...

Chihayafuru -- Season 2 continues to be great. I can't wait for the end of the season.

That's insane. That flic and fireflies are two films I know are good and will activity avoid seeing. Too damn sad.

The new ending sequence to Ixion Saga DT has me busting up laughing .
Looks like Fairy Tail is trying to get an episode per [manga] chapter. I assume that they are trying to avoid catching up too rapidly, so far it is working, so that's good.

Anybody have some suggestions for anime that has a lot of space or air battle type stuff? I love space battles for some reason.

Er, Bodacious Space Pirates.
Captain Harlock
Space Battleship Yamato
Vandread

For air battles, Last Exile is hard to beat.

Doesn't Cowboy Bebop have a fair amount of space battles (or at least, chases) in it? Been a while since I watched it.

Yep quite a few, and they are excellent!

Also maybe check out Macross Zero and Macross Plus.
And while I never finished it I remember enjoying Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Lot's of space battles and even more political intrigue.

Outlaw Star has some good space battles.

Macross Frontier also has lots of great additions to the Itano circus..

Contrail porn! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzXfV...

Mmm. I'm not sure anyone has ever finished watching LoGH. But picking it up from the beginning and trying again is still fun.

I've watched it so many times that the narrator's final phrase from every episode ("銀河の歴史かまた1ページ", [em]ginga no rekishii ka mata ichi peeji[/em], ~ "another page of the history of the galaxy") is burned into my brain.

Don't forget Voices of a Distant Star! It's a fun filled romp from beginning to end!

I tried the first couple of episodes of Kotoura-San on Crunchyroll last night. The first 10 minutes were a little tough to get through but it started to show some promise before the end of the episode, and the second episode delivered on it. The predominant lighthearted comedy beats are well done, and when it comes time for a somber moment they really commit to it. The art style is a solid "eh" but doesn't seem to hold the show back at all.

Final verdict: Check it out! There are 8 episodes out so far, with new ones arriving on Thursdays.

I'd also recommend The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Mainly cause I loved that series, felt like a nice breath of fresh air for me.

I've been going through Mushi-shi again and it's just as great as I remember but for some reason I forgot how many of the stories have sad endings.

Spoiler:

I had one of those moments of clarity as to the fleetingness of life when Ginkos' mom dies in the landslide. :(

Macross Frontier had a ton of spectacular mecha porn and space battles.

Eureka 7 has giant air-surfing mech battles. If you're looking for capital ships in the air, I recommend Last Exile.

Oh forgot about Eureka 7. Saw lots of it but not the whole thing when it was on Adult Swim or whatever. To the NetFlix.

Oh, Aquarion has air battles and mecha with mildly orgasmic transformations.

This is the best show to make fun of for that exact reason.

For space battles I very highly recommend Starship Operators.
It's extremely hard to find, at least it is for me, I still haven't finished the whole series yet and its only 10 or 12 episodes.

The space battles play out like long range submarine battles; way out of visual range and left to the Sensor Team and Navigation to find the enemy and position the ship so that the Gunnery bridge can bring to bare the main cannon while managing the Point-Defence system to protect against enemy strikes. Cyber and Electronic warfare constantly takes place, Engineering has to keep everything running and finally it's up to the Command officers to discuss tactics and to give out the orders to the rest of the crew to see it through. And the series actually bothers to take the time to show all this synergy leading to a battle being won (or lost)

The rest of the series consist of one part political drama, with a Nation-in-Exile trying to find political allies in hopes of finding a safe haven and to get other nations to act against the one who invaded them. The other part is akin to a reality show onboard the ship, showing how the College age crew struggle with the situation they have found themselves in, interact with each other in close-quarters and all the drama and romance that comes with it. In fact, the reality show part is like a show within a show as the crew lets a camera crew onboard to film them and broadcast in return for resources to keep the ship running while also helping to raise awareness of the planetary invasion that got them into this situation in the first place.

Great series, loved it.

Speaking of space battles and shows within a show... Martian Successor Nadesico?

Thanks guys, I've seen the majority of those! A couple I have not heard of so I'll check them out. (Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Starship Operators)

Speaking of Macross, at one point I had like 7 - 1/48 Macross figures. Had to sell them all off during my college years. Man that is some expensive collecting! :0

If you manage to find a complete collection of Starship Operators, please do let me know. Like I mentioned, I haven't finished the series and would much like to watch the last two episodes I'm missing.

One thing I'm curious about is, are you particularly fond of anime with good space battles, or good anime that happens to feature space battles? You seem set, but it's bugging me (for reasons such as, while Voices of a Distant Star is one of my favourite things since ever, I wouldn't really rate the combat part much - as is the cast for almost anything when the ships/mecha is rendered with 3D software, tbh.)

I guess it depends on the story. I can watch both but my post came after roaming through Youtube watching space battles. Nothing like watching some of the great Babylon 5 and BSG space battle montages on Youtube to get your blood running!

I just started watching Michiko and Hatchin. I believe it's the next project from the guys that made Cowboy Beebop and Samurai Champloo, both of which are two of my favorite shows of all time. I'm two episodes in, and so far it has the great writing/pacing, excellent animation, and awesome soundtrack that you'd expect from those guys. Funimation has all 22 eps streaming for members. I must admit, I'm pretty excited to see where it goes. It's really difficult not to get overly excited about it!
