Dark Souls Catch-All

I watched a video last night of someone beating the four kings naked at SL1 using only a fully leveled lightning club. Watching someone do it that way, it looks easy. I'm sure if I practiced the fight enough, I could do it, but there would be many, many broken walls/controllers/TVs left in my wake :)

I just encountered a serious douche in the Depths. He's invading people and using a cursed weapon to invade lvl 20 or so players. I don't mind being cursed, but that is seriously messed up to do to low level players. I was killed in one shot by curse, not by damage.

Scary stuff! Are you playing the PC version? I've never run into this before (I'm using the PS3 version), and a quick Google search pulled up an article on the Steam Community forums mentioning that the individuals doing this are probably hackers. There're aren't any weapons in the game (that I know of, at least) that should enable a player to inflict curse.

Indeed, there are no weapons that inflict curse. The only ways to become cursed in the game (usually) are Basilisks and Seath. I'm surprised these players aren't banned, usually GFWL is good at detecting modified data and banning the account. That said, DSFix does allow things like texture mods, and it's not too far from "texture mod" to "weapon mod".

I wonder... I play on PS3, and I saw someone with a bright blue face and hair. Any ideas how this is possible?

You can customize your character on the PS3 when you make a new one.

To have a bright blue face and hair? I don't see that option when I'm making a character.

There is a customize button that takes you into a deeper version of the character creator with many categories and sliders to mess with.

Nice, I had no idea. Thanks for the info

Took out the Hellkite Wyrm with my level 22

Hey all. Just got this game today. Has anyone had issues using DSFix to unlock the FPS to 60? They say in the readme that it can 'get you banned from GFWL'. Has anyone had trouble? 30 FPS is hard on my eyes.

I'm quite close to taking the PC plunge myself, what with that great Amazon deal going on.
How feasible is a ranged-only (or nearly only) play style? Do you have to buy arrows, or are bows unlimited use? Does your MP regenerate, or do you have to slurp down potions?

Where is that "delete friend" button?

Moose: You can be mostly ranged. Bows do require arrows. I'd suggest a Sorceror build, and creating an Enchanted bow.

You need to buy arrows and slurp potion to heal. Magic attacks are a set number and are only recharged at bonfires. You also need to raise a stat to open up slots for spells.

Jeff, I think the framerate is the only aspect of the visuals that you can't really mess with if you're planning on playing online at all. Crank everything else to max, but leave it at 30. You could unlock it and play offline, but I would strongly discourage that. The online is a huge part of this game, even if you plan to play mostly solo.

Puce, you can go for a ranged build, but going strictly for an archer type character probably won't work very well. Your be better off going for a sorcerer style build if you want to stay mostly at range.

I would very much encourage you to mess around with the melee before making that decision, as the melee combat in the Souls games is extremely gratifying compared to the ranged combat. You can go for a heavy magic or dexterity build and still be proficient at melee.

I certainly didn't and wouldn't mess with it. It has to do with the coop. It would probably mess that up, too. To be honest, 30 fps is hard on my eyes too, but it's really not an issue with this game compared to most. Your movement is always pretty slow.

It's a gorgeous game once you get all the DSFix settings set up. Also, head over to the nexus to install the UI and menu mods. It makes a world of difference.

Thanks for the information! I didn't even know there was a sorcerer class.
Well,. I went ahead and did the deed. That's my first game purchase since the RAGE DLC purchase back in December.
I take it a 360 controller is still the recommended way to play? I remember reading that the mouse/KB controls were pretty crap-tastic when it was first released.

360 all the way.

I think using a bow is fun. It is a great compliment to a Dex. Build and with the Hawk Ring and Ring of Fog you can headshot enemies and not make them aggro. Plus, the longbow is "easy" to get very early in the game if you know the way and you do not need to waste souls on attunement slots. Also, you can interrupt a shot to avoid damage, which you cannot do with spells.

Definitely use a 360 controller.

Argh! Downloaded, Installed, DSFix installed, and I made it through the character creation process only to get this right after the (rather cool) intro cutscene:

Worse, it didn't save my character creation process, so my time spent (twice) making the handsomest sorcerer in town went to waste.

Does it require any kind of compatibility mode/administrator rights adjustments?

*EDIT*

Okay, after a reboot I managed to make it through the intro. Unfortunately, now the screen looks this:
IMAGE(http://www.pucemoose.com/pics/ohdear1.jpg)

At least I got past the intro, so hopefully I can save the game and resume troubleshooting.Does the game automatically save when you exit, or is a checkpoint-only kind of deal?

I don't think I got the double image like you did but the smaller screen thing is cause by in game AA I think. If you turn that off it should fix it.

It automatically saves when you exit. However, you will start the game at wherever your last bonfire visit was. Yeah, I think the DSFix issue is with in game AA.

Ah, thanks for the AA tip! It was indeed turned on in the main game settings.
I think I'm getting closer; the game is back to full screen, but my interface looks like this:

IMAGE(http://www.pucemoose.com/pics/errfa.jpg)

I think that might be due to one of the interface mods - Try disabling them and see if that does it.

Or the PS3 controller with MotionJoy drivers.

Just picked up the steam version from amazon. Looking forward to digging into this again.

Ah HA! Good advice. Once I disabled the HUD and re-enabled it things started showing up properly.

Well, I died. The asylum demon was not impressed with my paltry flailings. I get the feeling that's something I'll probably need to get used to (dying).

Hmm.. the key bindings are all showing up as Keyboard keys, but I'm using a 360 controller. Any hints on what the X button is doing? When I press it, it looks like my dude is trying to either trying to prevent or assist a rather painful burst of flatulence.

Funny story (to me anyway)...

Guy invades me... I kill guy using (sword/pyro/estus)... Guy PMs me saying "Try to PVP honorably ...no estus"..

I wrote back "lol ..."

So, where is this written rule that protecting myself with estus in pvp is dishonorable ?

Hmm just spent 2 hours in New Londo Ruins and found out all the effort was a bit wasted - ie dead end, those who have played know what I mean.

Bad Dark Souls - Bad!

Long trek back the other way begins...
