Defiance: new blend of MMO

Was on vacation out of town, so couldn't try it, maybe next time.

They sent me a Beta Test Feedback survey. I hope they enjoy my responses to their questions. I was civil, of course, but hopefully they catch on that I was none too happy with their inaccessible servers...

I liked this when I played it the last 2 betas, a lot. What has me concerned is that it's fairly expensive ($60 minimum) and it's inexorably linked to a TV series that hasn't even premiered yet.

I like to get in on the ground floor of any MMO I play, but I cannot help but be concerned that if the TV series is a flop that the game will crater shortly afterwards.

The other big issue is not knowing how they are going to work the cash shop elements. Will it be completely playable and enjoyable without spending any additional cash like Guild Wars 2, or will it be horribly crippled if you're not paying significant extra funds in the cash shop like an SOE MMO?

I'm a fan of the work Trion Worlds has done so far, but I've been burnt on MMOs far too many times to just dump $60-$150 without thinking it over pretty hard these days. Right now I have a hard time believing that the game won't be on sale for 75% off two months after release, and I can't justify paying that much of a premium just to start playing on day one. Having to plan finances like a responsible adult just sucks sometimes.

Not sure what this is for yet...

Motion comic?

Comic lore intro to the game? game/series?

You got me too!

I think the Chronicles are really nothing more than advertisement in short story form. After watching the first one it looks like they're going to relate some of the starting story missions & setting from the MMO.

What's funny is that I just saw a commercial for the TV series on Syfy and immediately got interested. Just found out it's also a Trion MMO. Keeping this on my radar.

Episode 2 of the Chronicles is up. Really nothing more than a teaser commercial that hints at Shadow War content.

I preordered this today at my local gamestop after seeing the commercial the other day. I did not know anything about this game until then, looks pretty sweet. Is anyone going to be getting this on the PS3 by chance?

Shooter = PC for me.

I prepurchased it for the pc today.

There's some pretty solid information floating around that the next (and last) Beta Weekend event will be the weekend of the 15th.

Well, I'm going to go Xbox on this one. I do most of my gaming there and I'd be using the controller anyway if I was on PC so figure I might as well go with the platform that uses the controller by default.

If anyone else goes Xbox shoot me a friends request when the game launches. GT = Jigsaw hc

I'm in this beta, although maybe everyone that applied is, but I haven't checked it out yet. I had mostly written it off between the TV show tie-in and it being cross-platform with consoles. However I'm watching a beta gameplay video right now and it looks intriguing. Seems like the GWJ interest is low though.

i've been in the alpha, but have been spending most my free time in AA since it launched in KR. Between that, NWN, Arma3 alpha my plate is full. Plus like you said the interest seems low here. I truly do enjoy the game and excited for it because of what it brings to the MMO table.

For those of us that don't frequent the MMO forum, is this America's Army in Korea?

I don't think it is really clear what it brings to the mmo table though. I see videos of people shooting glowing things. The specifics seem light or vague.

AA is Archeage

The story telling and meshing it with the TV show for one. Nothing like this has been done since AC and their monthly updates. They'd change the world depending on what the community did during the events. Defiance will be changing the tv show as well as the game world depending on in game events. Pretty sweet in my book.

Plus it's a solid shooter in a MMO. Not that is a unique point anymore but at the time it was announced it was

At first blush it looks like a serious Borderlands with customizable weapons. That's a pretty interesting concept.

After spending a few weeks in the Alpha I pre-ordered last week. I still have concerns about the game being tied to a TV show that could tank in the first season, but SyFy has dumped so much money into this project that I have a hard time imagining they'll drop it in less than 6-9 months. I easily see myself getting that 6-9 months of enjoyment out of this.

I thought I heard somewhere SyFy is already planning on a season 2 for the show. Maybe in the SXSW news.

The final Beta weekend has been announced for the 22nd, one week later than originally planned. I hate seeing stress test events getting pushed so close to launch. Trion has an excellent record so far for clean launches, I really hope they don't blow it on this one.

Someone in the Massively forums pointed to an hour long sit down with a dev playing Defiance.

After that, I am sold. And while I am not chomping at the bit to get it, I think that is more because it is just around the corner.

Parts of the TV show I have seen previewed look solid as well.

After seeing footage of streams on twitch this weekend, I preordered on steam for pc. I hope the community is solid but I know I can count on you fine gentlemen and ladies.

The third beta ( i think) for PS3 started today. This is the first one that I have tried. Played for about an hour and had a blast. Went to gamestop and payed off the rest for my collector's edition. I will just have to find out how to squeeze this game inbetween Bioshock Infinite. Any goojers have this coming for PS3 so I can add you to my friends list?

So I tried out the beta test on PS3 for PS+ users over the last two nights, maybe 2-3 hours total. Saying this game looks like Borderlands is a huge understatement. It's like they ripped the entire UI straight from Borderlands. Ark Hunter? Seriously? Is the main bad guy going to be called Handsome Jim?

Beyond that I don't see anyway this comes out in a couple weeks and is anything but a gigantic mess. I've played for a few hours and have seen multiple places where cutscenes have a "Work in progress, content missing" message. There is weird geometry all over the place. I've been warped back in time randomly and suddenly had to redo a quest multiple times. Maybe this is just the PS3 version, but it's bad.

The other thing is it's a horrible shooter. The auto aim is jacked up to 11, the movement is super floaty, and sometimes when you stop moving your characters just keeps moving forward for some reason and you need to jiggle the stick to get them to stop.

Maybe these are just beta things that will be patched out, but considering this is supposed to release in a little over a week it's very concerning.

not seen ANY of that on the pc and i've been playing it for awhile. The initial performance issues have been consistantly getting better.

I got into the beta for this weekend for PC. Does it support an xbox control, or is it keyboard/mouse only?

It has full controller support.
