Rocksmith Catch All

Still hit and miss. They're still improving and more of them have scaling difficulties.

So, next week... f*ck YEAH!

A few years ago at the height of the Rock Band/Guitar Hero craze, I bought an electric guitar (an Ibanez ARX140) and a Justin Guitar DVD foolishly thinking I'd have the willpower to actually learn how to play.

Well, here I am with a basically unused electric guitar, a Justin Guitar DVD, and Rocksmith for the PC!

Hey, I've got an Ibanez ARX140 as well! You should start playing around with it. I really like it.

Cool! I'm going to try to put in at least 30 minutes a night with Rocksmith or the Justin Guitar videos.

That's a great combo. I don't feel that Rocksmith is very welcoming to a complete novice. With some foundation work from JustinGuitar it'll really help with your practice though.

Gumbie,
How did you get a picture of me while I was practicing?

LiquidMantis,
It's awesome having that immediate feedback in Rocksmith. I feel like I'm contributing to an actual song versus disjointed plucking noises.

Oh man, so Carry On and Black Betty tomorrow!

I see talk of the BASS dlc having been released back in October but http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-US/downloads/index.aspx only shows it on XBL and PSN. Did the pc bass get canned?

Nope, unless I've been having a really good acid trip since last November.

Seriously, I think the bass was part of the PC release. It was an add-on for the console.

Yeah. The bass DLC was released for the consoles a few months before the PC release of Rocksmith. When they released the PC version, they replaced all existing rocksmiths (consoles included) with a version that included the bass DLC. The only reason you'd need to buy the DLC separate is if you bought Rocksmith on the console before they released the new version.

Man, I'm still working on the original disc songs, all this DLC! And I haven't even touched the bass part of the game, anyone playing that seriously? I mean I want to, but no time.

Yesterday I spent a bunch of hours getting the Strokes "Under cover of darkness", that song is trickier than it sounds >_>

I am playing the bass part seriously. It is good fun, I think I'm level 10. Although I seem to have hit a plateau for my next event. Smoke on the Water of all things! The basic line is pretty easy but Roger Glover noodles around it so much it will be hard to get it to where it needs to be without memorizing it (which I am terrible at). So I have been delving into the guitar side a little more lately.

I used to play the bass parts on my guitar, just for a change of pace. Then I borrowed my brother-in-law's Fender jazz bass last year, and now I can't go back. Naturally, now I'll have to get a bass of my own - I mean, that's half the content of the game going unplayed!

I'd be curious to know how many people are seriously practicing and perfecting individual songs using Rocksmith. I admit, for some of the more difficult songs I tend to get the main riffs and choruses down, and at least passably learn the solos, but I rarely spend much time really digging into a song and practicing it. I'm finding that there are certain passages that Rocksmith simply will not recognize me playing correctly, no matter how close I get. I really wish there were a way to manually specify mastery in the Full Song play mode. There are a lot of solos that I hit around 70-80% mastery on, and in order to progress any further I have to convince the game that a certain bend or slide is being played correctly, and it just won't accept it. It's a bit frustrating to go into Riff Repeater and pump a solo up to 90% or more mastery and nail it except for one small lick, and those handful of notes are keeping me back at 60%-70% mastery and that's all the full song chart will ever show.

I've also noticed at least 2 or 3 song charts that are flat-out wrong. Usually note being played on the wrong strings, but sometimes I think they've charted chords that are different from what is actually being played.

I haven't played in a few weeks but I think Rocksmith picks up the note you're playing so for example, on a bass, you can play an open A or the A on the 5th fret of the E string and it'll register as the same in Rocksmith.

I get the frustration. Palm mutes are the bane of my existence.

I'm at rank 7 on bass. Event qualifying performances now require me to master most sections of a song. During my last event, the encore was Master Mode. Ummm. Where'd the notes go? And thanks for the warning.

I don't care for how the game throws new things at you first, then opens up practices modes for those things. Not sure how they thought I had a song memorized and mastered. That's gonna take some time. Especially with the crappy practice modes. Yeah, I played the phrase at 100%. But I definitely don't feel confident on it and I don't have it memorized. But I can't play it on infinite repeat. I have to go back through the menus all over again. I'm guessing this has been discussed before but how did they screw up such a basic tenet of learning, ie, repetition?

They "fixed" that but it's still not intuitive. You have to manually set the mastery mode in Riff Repeater, then it won't kick you out.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Being thrown Master Mode encores is my least favorite thing about Rocksmith right now. I wish there were an option to disable them.

That said, I could avoid them altogether by not playing events, but I like throwing 4 or 5 songs that I want to focus on into a set. Spares me painful navigation of the song list.

I'm also with Boudreaux on wishing that I could set mastery for a full song and not just sections.

I like Master Mode encores, unless I haven't played the song in a month. Even then, I can just noodle my way through by ear. I don;t really care about the score at that point.

tboon Rocksmith Female Doggoes:

I don't like is when they level you up in the middle of a performance. Oh, I had this good enough to play the event and suddenly you want me to do what? I thought that was what practice was for.

I also hate that the game seems to have trouble detecting a low E sustain. It detects when I hit it but then stops registering. Aggravating.

The charts are sometimes off; on some songs the game loves to pull you out of position when there's a good alternative in the same position. Sure, you can translate on the fly but doing so while trying to learn is a little frustrating.

I really have come to loathe the stupid little animation you have to sit through before getting to the Riff Repeater. I get it, were playing in my living room. But no we're not, we're playing this on my computer. Just take me where I want to go dammit!

The level system is uneven and the game at times spoon-feeds too slowly. Playing 2-4 random notes in a 10-12 note sequence, I'm not sure what that is doing exactly. It works a lot of the time, easing you in, but when it misses it really misses.

Female Doggoing aside, I love playing this. It has rekindled my love of playing, especially bass, which is less interesting to play on its own, that has been dormant in me for a very long time. It's like nothing else I have seen which make it rough spots more forgiveable but so good in so many areas those same rough spots grate more.

Hahahaha, this one, yeah. Wait, you mean not everyone playing this is a rock star on their tour bus, nostalgic for the times when they had to practice 8 hours in their room?

Even if the game were played by rock stars, who in their right mind would enjoy going back to simulate their cabin time, haha. So there we sit, in a room, simulating we're in a room...

Sure, if you have an alternate way of playing, it'll work fine. I'm talking about actual wrong note charts.

As an example, in the DLC song "Just Got To Be" by the Black Keys, there is a lick in the main riff that is played like this:

E---------------------------
B---------------------------
G---------------------------
D-----7/9------------------
A-----------9/7------------
E---------------------------

You start out on the D string (blue), slide from 7 up to 9, then drop down to the A string (yellow) and slide from 9 down to 7. However, in the note chart, they start on yellow and drop down to red. Completely different notes, it's just incorrect.

What are you basing it on though? Dan Auerbach changes stuff up all the time.

This week's DLC:

Still haven't even taken it out of the package, and I need to stock up on SpaceBucks and DLC.

I've only had Rocksmith for a few days and I'm already annoyed by that animation. The entire UI seems designed to slow you down as much as possible. Maybe let me decide if I want to re-tune before each activity?

i hate HATE and i mean realy hate having to go back through the menu to replay a song im practicing on. On the PC it's bit easier to pause at the very end and select restart, but if you miss it... grrrrrr

Well, since the game picks up the notes, I guess it needs to make sure it is picking up the right ones. When I re-picked my guitar game, I had some really really old strings on my Strat and the D string would go out of tune in the middle of a song. Suddenly, I am playing the right thing (I think) but missing every note on that one string. So I would personally put re-tuning all the time into the "slightly annoying but can kind of see why" rather than some of the other UI aggravations (which I agree do feel like they are there to slow you down).

It makes perfect sense why they are doing it that way. However, I think it's just trading one form of frustration with another. It would be nice to have some way to skip it for people with equipment that stays in tune for longer than three minutes.
