PC Racing Simulation

My racing may be over before it begins.

Was trying to setup iracing last night and my video card decides to start wigging out every time it goes into a game. I get about 2 seconds of viewing my cockpit and then a blue screen.

Going to try to work on it this weekend, but this kind of stuff is what I do for a living and I really hate having to work on my own PC.

sh*t.

You made pretty good time then! Although I was hobbled by not having a whole lot of space to move around and I had a busted knee that I couldn't bend or stress.

It was estimated 3-7 days and it took right at 7 so I'll take it.

Did you have any issues putting it together? The main snag that I've hit so far is while I was trying to put together the monitor stand; I was trying to slide the two rods that go from the base to the mount section itself. One side went through no problem, but the other was a nightmare. I ended up having to take a hammer to it pretty aggressively. Undfortunately, I didn't have the holes lined up, so I won't be able to get the bolt through, and I seriously doubt I'm going to be able to take it back out either. I think I'll just end up leaving it like it is; that s.o.b. is wedged in there so bad I think I could mount my car instead of my computer monitor and it still wouldn't fall.

Huh, was there maybe excess powder coat or something?

It didn't look like it. Before I took the hammer to it I was able to pull it back out by hand and look at it and it looked fine. I also somewhat tried to clean the inside in case there was something that it was grinding against that was causing it to get stuck, but I didn't see anything. Maybe there was something I wasn't able to see and didn't get.

Pictures?

and... I MAY have fixed my issues..... testing now.....

Should easily have my D license at the end of February. Did a couple of TTs and my first race today and went up .38. I'm not the fastest out there, but I am shaving time at Summit Point, but I have been the cleanest in the groups I've been in. I guess it's not a real challenging requirement but I'll easily hit my MPR after this 4 week rookie season.

You should be able to advance if you can get your SR up high enough without waiting for week13. That's how I got to A really. A few races here and there, but mostly just turning a lot of TT laps without messing up. It's hard sometimes for me to force myself to go slow and not push it around the track, but jumping license levels was worth it.

Not sure, but I think if you get your SR to 4.0 you will auto-up in like 24 hours or something... it seems like that's how it worked for me.

Oh, that must be the fasttracking thing. Rookie promotions are every 4 weeks as they're doing 3 rounds for rookies.

SimHQ is going to start running their GSC series next Sunday at noon EST. The first round will be the V8 Stock Cars at Cascavel. Three races, a 10 minute, 20 minute and then 30 minute race with reversed fields for the second two.

Usually we do practice races at 8pm on Wednesdays and at noon on Saturdays. We have 13 drivers who should be there next weekend (we had that number for a trial run today). It's be cool if we could get to 15 or so.

More info will be available here:

How are the physics in that game? GSC?

I'm REALLY spoiled on the iracing tire model. It makes it very difficult for me to pick up on other racing games. I guess because the tire for iracing is so well ingrained in my memory from back as far as nascar 2003 I'm resistant to change.

The gMotor engine, in the right hands, is pretty damn capable. In GSC there is a good sense of weight transfer, you can feel the traction loss through the FFB, and there aren't any canned spins. It's very well done.

Although it depends on the cars, I would say the Papyrus/iRacing model is a little bit lower on grip overall and gives you slightly more of a visual sense of weight transfer. I'm not qualified to say which one is more real, but they are in the same league.

If you've got the time, there is an 60 minute time limited demo of the full game on their site. There is also a longer 30 day demo with limited cars and tracks. I think you'll really be impressed by how fun the V8 Stock Car is to drive.

Well she is officially put together and in her area of operation! I'll take some pictures once I'm able to get everything cleaned up and looking somewhat normal again. I only just got everything situated Sunday afternoon, and between the Super Bowl and work I haven't had a chance to put it to good use yet, but hopefully tonight will be the night!

I took the new Simbin title for a spin last night and it's certainly worth a shakedown run at least. I spent most of my time doing some stupid competition thing whereby you drive a BMW at insane speeds through a fictitious Swedish backdrop. The sense of speed was really well done. The only thing that is kind of annoying to me is the drivers head movement. I realize that they are trying to simulate the g-forces affecting your head, but it can be really disorienting when I'm not feeling those same forces upon my ass at the same time.

If y'all have the time, like I say, it's worth a look. Graphics are great. Wheel and pedal setup took some fiddling for me to get it where it felt right, but that's usually the case.

Not sure how I feel about having to buy spacebux to trade for cars and tracks....

Anyone else care to opine?

Will anyone be live streaming Goodjer events?

I would LOVE to do that, but I dunno how... and wouldn't it just be the view from my cockpit?

It would be nice to have one streamed by an observer where you could shift the cameras and make it a bit more interesting.

It's unfortunate that you have to own the content to be able to spectate, at least in iRacing. If we did something with the base content anyone could sign up for one of the free trial memberships and spectate though.

I know very little about streaming, but I know the popular choice for mixing different videos and pictures into a scene is XSplit. OBS is a freeware alternative. I've never watched someone stream a triple monitor resolution before, but that would leave some real estate at the bottom portion of the video for webcam, gauges, etc....a lot of real estate. Would be interesting to mess with.

I enjoyed the previous goodjer race videos on youtube, and have enjoyed watching casters on twitch.tv lately, so I was curious if anyone had interest in streaming. Plus it would allow me to backseat drive.

Well, I've started painting cars again so if anyone in iRacing want's something nice and personal, let me know what car and sponsorship you'd like. If I can find the logos in good shape, I can usually do a decent job.

Also, I don't know if any of y'all notice the "my iracers online" thingy that shows up at the bottom of the dashboard in iracing, but... If y'all see me running some rookie or D class testing sessions, jump in and let's chat if you want to do a race or something. I'm using those sessions to just have some fun and learn different lines around the track so c'mon in!

Almost forgot - here's a video of the hillclimb in RaceRoom on Steam. It's not as visceral as the true run though. For some reason they turn off the head jerk / G-force effects in the replay.

After a couple weeks of terrible pace in iRacing's Nationwide car, I put down some decent laps at NHMS. In my only race of the week I finished in 8th out of 23. I probably could have finished higher had I not spun someone on pit road and then blown past my own stall afterward.

Oh crap, this reminds me that I haven't logged a race or TT for the Mazda Cup this week. I need to get that in here shortly.

Anyone planning on running the Daytona 500 this week? I don't know for sure that I will be, but I would like to. I need to get some practice in so I'll probably try to run in a couple official sessions this week. Hopefully someone I run into can get me a decent qualifying setup so I can start as close as possible to the front of my split and miss the field-thinning first 30 or so laps.

I don't think my back and shoulders can survive all 500 miles.

Since we moved from an apartment with carpet to one with hardwood floors, I had to switch to racing on a metal folding chair. My nice Herman Miller desk chair doesn't have wheel locks so I kept rolling back and couldn't keep a consistent distance to the wheels and pedals.

LOL that reminds me of when I first started iRacing and I had my stuff attached to a TV tray. I didn't have the pedals pushed up against anything and when I hit the brake hard once to avoid a wreck I pushed the pedals like a foot back and I spent the rest of the race slumped down in my chair so I could reach the pedals. Pissed me off then; funny as hell now lol

Once the Gen6 car comes out (whenever it finally happens) I might take you up on that offer. I'm wanting to run a Havoline paint scheme on the Gen6 Ford like Davey Allison had back in the day. That was my first favorite driver when I started watching with my dad as a young buck.

Great, finished a last minute race only to exit out and find out that iRacing is down again. I'm guessing I won't get any results for it. Only two more races left in this week.

Maybe that's a good sign for the Daytona 500 no massive crash like with the 2.4 lol

Yay! It's back up and my results were logged. Only got .09 SR though, still .29 from immediate promotion. Guess I'll try to squeeze in one more race before the venue changes, assuming iRacing stabilizes.

[Edit] DAMMIT! Was talking to my wife and missed the registration cut-off for the 2200 GMT race.

Time for a divorce I think.

Got in on the last race, landed a 4th place finish. Might have been able to get a 3rd, but on one of the early laps I had a driver push on the inside of T1. I went wide off my line and slid off track. At Lime Rock it's easy to fall off the world from there. Had to sit through a 1:30 towing timer. KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED!

Anyway on to Laguna Seca.

LiquidMantis,
Looks like you had good pace compared to the leader in your last race. You're so close to the D license.
