NBA Season 2012-13. Draft and off-season 2013.

Still the Kings.

See: New Orleans Jazz/Hornets. Houston Oilers/Texans. Baltimore Colts/Ravens.

As long as the moved franchise still exists, they take the records with them. Utah Jazz, Tenn. Titans and Indy Colts keep their records from the former city, despite a new team replacing them in their old city.

Oh ok. I guess there's a chance they share them then. Weird.

Seattle fans weren't so mad because the team moved, it was because they were lied to and betrayed.

Good point. Still, I think knowing what it's like to lose a team must make it bittersweet.

True, but the OKC ownership group has always said that it would make the Supersonics name available to a new team in Seattle and would share franchise history with the new club. Complicates it a bit.

Yeah, weird, right?

I mean, if the Kings move to Seattle and become the Supersonics, and then move to a new arena in a few years, don't you think the fans are going to want to hang a championship banner in the rafters?

But then they'll also have Chris Webber and Mitch Richmond's jerseys hanging there too?

EDIT: Also, now that Steve Ballmer will be an owner, this needs to happen before every game:

There is precedent for this with the Baltimore Ravens/Cleveland Browns. Although the Browns relocated to Cleveland the team history and name would remain in Cleveland.

My thoughts on this weeks results. It's really hard to win with 3 people injured. I'm too used to Fantasy Football where I have the space to stash people on my bench.

EDIT: Also don't forget to set your line-ups. Unless you're one of the bad team names. Then please forget, it's my only shot at gaining ground this week.

You've just nominated yourself for co-comissioner, or commissioner outright for next year.

Yeah I had to give up and dump a couple players last week. I'm holding onto Kevin Love still since he's injured again, but overall on the season he's hurting me more than helping I think.

Ha, jokes on you. I hadn't set my lineups for, like, a month but I sure sh*t did now.

I could watch the Raptors' Terrence Ross dunk all day. Damn. I don't have video of the one I just saw in tonight's Nets game, but he pulled off a under-the-basket reverse putback. It was insane.

Thanks for sharing that. I didn't see those. Insane.

And here's the one from last night.

Terrible League Pass commentator team alert of the night goes to the Houston Rockets.

Did somebody say TURRIBLE?

I'm too lazy to find a better picture of him in a Rockets jersey.

Pacers get a national holiday game on ESPN Mon after having a national tv game last Thurs on TNT? What world is this? I get to see my favorite team again suddenly. It's like a decade ago when Reggie was still there.

Seriously getting so sick of Miami, Boston, LA, and the Knicks over and over and over. :p

That's unlikely to change any time soon. To wit: All of the 10 All-Star Game starters come from just five cities. The four you mention plus OKC.

Seems that deal to move the Kings to Seattle is officially in place, now.

So, no one put up last week's results yesterday. If it's not up when I get home tonight I'm going write a short script to format the results. In the meantime, I really enjoyed today's About Last Night, plenty of good basketball jokes.

I don't follow the NBA much but I thought this was pretty funny -

Brian Scalabrine dominated the competition in Boston one-on-one challenge

Over 11 NBA seasons, journeyman forward Brian Scalabrine cultivated an image of a regular guy who just happened to play basketball. Eventually, many fans came to believe that Scalabrine was an Average Joe, not an elite athlete (as all NBA players are), and figured that he probably wasn't that great at the profession that earned him tens of millions of dollars. This summer, Scalabrine said that he resented this suggestion (even if he also heartily embraced the regular guy image), and in December he challenged any Boston-area amateur basketball players to games of one-on-one.

The page has a couple of videos of the 1 on 1 challenge (about 5 mins long). Basically he owns the guys.

Scal is an awesome dude.

The thing with professional athletes is, there's a spectrum of ability. Anyone that has ever played in the NBA is in the top 99.9% of basketball ability, and the difference between the very bottom of that .1% and the 100% is very, very small relatively. It's easy for everyday fans to forget that.

Come on no updates?

Ok... Rondo is out for the season so the Celts are cooked. Confusing part is the knee jerk reaction over at Boston Central... sorry I mean Grantland is that they somehow need to blow up the team and trade Garnett and Pierce.

Which brings us to the last point: What deals for Pierce might be realistic, given that Boston under new cap rules can add only about $2.4 million in salary? Ainge's first target will be either a blue-chip guy on a rookie contract or a good first-round pick. He's not getting both, and getting just one will likely require Boston taking something unpalatable back — and/or sending out one of the Avery Bradley–Jared Sullinger pair. Some places to look for that kind of deal:

Zach Lowe then goes on to explain like 10 different potential trades I didn't read.

I know they are getting old but uhhhhh the money they are owed and the warts they are showing pretty much makes them worthless to trade IMO. Neither are an expiring contract and I'm not sure what GM thinks either is the missing championship piece.

Which leads me to my way simpler scenario. Tank the season. This isn't exactly a good team to begin with. Sitting 20-23 and already 17th it wouldn't take much more effort to get into the lottery. Then go from there in the off season. Personally I think its kinda despicable to start floating Pierce around in trade talks. They are almost at the point where his trade value is so poor just let the guy retire as a Celtic in storybook fashion.

edit:

Paul Pierce: $16,790,345 $15,333,334
What on earth could you get back for a guy making that much cash with the new salary cap rules?
Throw this year out. Take another run at it next year with Garnett + Pierce + Rondo + whatever you can do with a lottery pick/free agency. Then 2014/15 Pierce comes off the books and probably either signs manageable money or retires.

Yeah but Rondo will probably be out the first half of the season next year too. It just all around not a great situation for Boston, they basically gave up their flexibility hoping to win last year or this year, and the future is pretty bleak until 2014-15.

I agree with jowner. Boston has no flexibility, but the new conventional wisdom of blowing a team up if they're not competing for a title seems silly. KG and Pierce seem like they're the kinds of guys willing to go to battle against long odds as long as you surround them with enough talent to try. And they both seem to want to retire Celtics and that seems to be coming soon. Why not surround them with as much good, young talent as possible and run with it? Either those young players will be mentored by some of the best, win some games and retire or they get lucky and make a run.

Either way trading away those players will get them little to nothing. I don't understand the mentality of either blowing a team up or collecting aging vets. How often has the latter worked? KG, Allen and Pierce were still relatively young when they won. And they surrendered role players like Posey and Perkins early rather than attempt another run.

Same with Dallas.

Same with the Lakers.

I think we're seeing that that kind of strategy for building a team is deeply flawed. If your team has chemistry, they get along well enough and you can't make a *major* move, like a can't miss top 3 draft pick, then stand pat. Stand pat and make another run with a team that almost got you to another title.

Of course he went and won the dunk contest to make me look smart.

Yeah, I saw some people on twitter talking about how good even the D-League guys are. Most of them would DESTROY everyone at your local court. Like, 21-1 destroy them. Like the top commenter at the link says, in NBA terms, a certain player may be awful. But compared to the general population, he's RIDICULOUSLY GOOD.

Fun story! The Knicks used to train at my alma mater, SUNY Purchase. One year, a few of the dudes who probably weren't going to make the team hung out with the students after a practice, just making nice (and probably scouting some of the female "talent" IYKWIM). One of the dudes on our b-ball team (which was Div III, barely, but anyway) challenged one of them to a game of 21. I think he took on Lavor Postell.

Who? Exactly.

Postell eviscerated this kid in a way I'd never seen before, and haven't ever seen since. He literally spotted him four points, and then ripped off 21 in a row, including a three that was nearly a halfcourt shot.

That show on SpikeTV, Pros v. Joes touched on this as well, that even several-years retired athletes were SO MUCH BETTER than you.

I think there is a little bit of setup to favor the particular retired pro. I think that technically I could but I am not sure I'd want to try and tackle Hershel Walker (I think it was) even if he didn't have a running start.

edit: I am 6ft 4in and (thankfully) now down to 240ish lbs. And I am definitely athletic. And also note that I am only claiming the ability to tackle Hershel Walker and only once at that. And I am not going to make any bold claims as to how many tries it would take me.

Terrence Williams... FROM LOUISVILLE... signed a 10-day with the Celtics. Supposedly will see action tonight against his former teammate, Earl Clark, vs the Lakers.

So this happened.

And then Monroe scored 10 points in the last 5 minutes to get the Pistons the win

Sure. Still pretty sweet. That's part of why we watch the game. For both reasons.
