Wife and I are looking to replace our busted ass aging task chairs with some decent ones and I'm sure a decent chair can be had in the $100-$300 range, I'm just at a loss where to start. What are you all sitting on/in? Do you like it? Can I get it in Ottawa? Put yer butt-rest to the test!
This chair would only be good if ....
Does it need to be a task chair?

I can't help, since I'm currently thinking about replacing my own chair, on account of the hydraulics being in the process of giving out. But I'll be reading everyone's suggestions with interest.

Here's mine.
Granted, I got it on sale, in the $120-130 range, it's been about 3.5 years. Mostly I wanted the adjustable armrests so my wife and I could both comfortably use the chair. And just so I could put them where I wanted them, as I have a several inches longer wingspan than my height (aka long arms) and a lot of chairs are not comfortable at their default.
It does have an issue with the armrest covers cracking eventually, after a couple years of heavy use. But the company was nice enough to send me replacement armrests for completely free. And also, I lost one of the wheels when we moved, and they replaced that for free as well. Can't really beat that level of service.

I picked up the Markus from Ikea after Legion and others had recommended it. 2 years now, and I'm still happy with it. Despite my concerns, space was not an issue.

I don't agree with Druidpeak's suggestion. The back of that chair is clearly going into warp.
Is hyperspace an issue?

Gonna disagree with you and give a nod to the Markus. I own it as well and love the chair. I do notice that I like to get up every couple hours just to stretch my legs though. Not sure if it's the chair or just me. Regardless I still love it
What is the difference between task chairs, desk chairs, and office chairs?
I have been rocking this for a year, and it has been great.

I am about to utter chair blasphemy here. But I like it better than the Herman Millers at work.

Doesn't need to be a task chair, but wheels and pneumatics are preferred. Good link KingGorilla, I'll see if there's any put together at the local Ikea I can try out.

I've had this chair for about a year (the black pleather version). The foam is still great. So far, I've had absolutely no quality issues with it. I love the thing and would buy another one if it were to ever die on me.

Herman Miller Aeron chairs are not great and they are expensive. They're popular only because they are deemed, "we won't get sued for ergonomics" and that's it.
I find these to be fairly comfortable, but it really depends, http://store.hermanmiller.com/Products/Setu-Chair.
Best luck.
This is roughly what we use.
Pricy? Sure. But we've been using it for about 13 years now, for both of us. Breaking it down, that's a decent deal. Would buy another when this finally dies, would recommend.

We got our office chairs from Costco. Leather, just under $100 when we bought them. Lasted a year so far with no wear marks or problems. I'd highly recommend them. Very comfortable as well.
For pure comfort, you cannot beat a Lazy-Boy recliner. Love love love mine!

Don't forget to check the office furniture liquidation place, here in town.
Surplus Warehouse on Industrial, and Office Furniture Liquidators on Catherine.
You'll probably be able to get a three or four hundred dollar office chair with all of the adjustments, in good shape, for very little.
There's also a government auction site, where they dump off computers, hardware and furniture, Though a lot of the time you have to buy an auction lot.
Don't overlook the value of seat tilt. New, you usually have to go into the $300 range to get it.
Staples carries chairs made by Global. Their hardware is pretty good. They also have an office in town. They came by our office and dropped three or four demo chairs a few years ago. They have an office on Isabella, but I'm not sure if you can just go into a showroom and buy one or two chairs.
I didn't find their backrests particularly comfortable as a tall guy. There seems to be a bit of a rent where lower back support should be. The backrest I have, which I like, was a staples exclusive that Staples eventually dropped for one that looks similar but is less comfortable. Staples was helpful enough to track down the product from the numbers on a sticker inside the upholstery, and order it from Global when I got another office chair base off of Kijiji.
/wall of text. As a CAD operator, and a tall guy, seating is important.
Is there anything that isn't put together at your local Ikea?

That is what sold me on my chair. A lot of the floor stuff at Ikea you know has had many asses in them, because they creak, list, and lean. This one was still solid.

Alright I tried the Markus swivel at Ikea and really like it, despite my general hatred for ikea things I'm gonna pick up 2 for my wife and I today. An interesting thing is the cheaper non-leather version is a more comfortable chair than the leather version which comes with a $40.00 premium.
Thanks for the help!

Looks great at the head of a conference room table. Lets the peons know who's boss (Tony Danza).

Welcome to the GWJ Markus club! I would have gone for the fabric version rather than the leather version except that they didn't have black.

Just like a bed you shouldn't skimp on a chair. I recently replaced my old chair. Love this one.
Ergohuman Mesh Highback.
I went leather mostly because I wanted a leather chair. My wife, live in girlfriend at that time, reminded me that I tend to spill things, and leather is easier to clean, is less likely to stain if I dump coffee or lunch on it. She was right, of course. Also, I have taken to having a smoke while I work, and leather will not absorb that scent.
But I am thinking, in the future, I might go standing desk at my home office.

I'll be picking up a Markus next time I'm at IKEA. I got a $40 chair about a year ago, it's far too short, and there's already a groove from my slender frame. I don't want a leather one, but I'm not particularly fond of the green or blue fabric. Hmm.

When I went in they had a light charcoal and a black cloth version of the chair.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out when I'm there. The website only showed green and blue for cloth.

I didn't see one available when I got mine, but they could have just been out of stock. They may change up available colors every once in awhile, too. I seem to remember my friend having a red one.
