Hello Ouya!

I was looking for that one but I figured wild speculation is wild speculation.

I imagine that would just be at the most a mod of an existing controller or an early prototype of the new one. I couldn't imagine them actually using that for many reasons. The first would be having sticks that are convex with a concave outer ridge. It just looks like a recipe for sore thumbs. However, I could see a touchpad and speaker/mic being on the new one.

I'm not sure their timing is right, but they could be on to something. Obviously, if people just want Netflix and other streaming content, a Roku or Apple TV makes much more sense. But Microsoft could use their brand and a tight connection into Windows to produce a media box that introduces Xbox into homes of non-gamers on a scale like the Wii did.

The things is, they can't require Gold subscriptions, or its dead on arrival. They could drop the requirement on a media box, and then maybe provide access to a portion of their Arcade or Indie games preferably Kinect-centric. If it shipped with the improved Kinect, then they have a pretty sweet system, as 99% of our Kinect use comes from voice control while watching media. Suddenly you have box that can attract non-gamers in droves.

I have been wondering why 12 Month Subscription Cards have been on sale so frequently lately...

Didn't they recently do a free weekend for Netflix where you didn't need Gold?

I'm not sure how that is related.

I'm talking about an Xbox media box that may not even play games. They can't make a subscription part of the deal, because there are too many competitors that don't, and I can't imagine that service can be significantly better.

I don't pay for XBL Gold for Netflix and the like, I pay for the social gaming, which is significantly better on the 360 than its competitors. Because I have Gold, I can use Netflix. But I could also use my Tivo. I would also consider an Apple TV or Roku before paying a subscription for Netflix.'

Microsoft can, and probably should continue charging for XBL Gold for the next gaming console. That money has maintained a service I want to use, rather than a service, like the PS3, I would be stuck with using. I mean, free would be nice, but not if that division lost funding to continue to improve it.

Would love to see Microsoft roll the Gold Subscription with the Office 365 Home Plan... make me pay one monthly fee to access a host of Microsoft online services.. for a family of 4 or 5 with High School and College kids that would be invaluable.

That would be an absolutely brilliant idea and a way to take on PlayStation Plus in a way Sony can't match. And for that reason alone, I know Microsoft will never do it.

If they turn an Xbox subscription into something similar to the upper-tier PSN subscription, with free games and such. Maybe X points per month that you can spend on stuff.

That's the kind of joined up thinking I would expect Microsoft to totally discount and ignore. On the face of it, it would be adding a bonus on another platform to what you're doing on another (would there be any antitrust concerns there?), but I wonder if they did think about it, the games division would start wonder why they would bother if they don't have many games on PC, and if it would drive customers into the arms of another platform that's strong on PC (steam). It'd be nice if they did something be mutual beneficial to another party (or another division in MS) or that they show a sign of serious thought towards PC gaming themselves.

Well, you never know, Microsoft might throw their full support behind PC gaming as a platform and fix Games for Windows Live up to be a real contender in the--

Nope, couldn't make THAT come out with a straight face.

Oh, that if we're about a year out from a new console where you don't need a Gold subscription, that they might be pushing as many sales as they can before the announcement.

The odds that the Nextbox doesn't require a subscription to play multiplayer is slim and none. It's not what I was talking about, at all. There are rumors that Microsoft will release a media box along side their new console. On that device, they can't sell a subscription, when Apple Tv and Roku don't require them.

I don't know if it's keeping the buzz going about a prestigious powerful xbox3, but anything to talk/speculate about that might be a xbox-lite seems to have dried up. I'd say the area is probably well served already, but that doesn't mean MS couldn't serve it too on their platform.

That market is already heavily served and it's fairly hard to differentiate yourself. On top of that, it waters down the ability for the Xbox to be seen as a single box for all media. They would be stupid to do that.

For that to happen Microsoft would have to know that PC Gaming exists.
I would totally buy an XBox and a year of Gold if MS killed Windows 8, can you hear me MS? You'll get my money and can start on Windows 9 immediately!

HA!! Loved this comment.

On another note, LiquidMantis, your avatar image looks like a semi-secret endorsement of the xbox Infinity logo

I saw that yesterday and put it in the PS4 thread, but something else occurred to me about the price and how it might translate to other countries. The UK isn't called "rip off Britain" for nothing, and we've currently got 20% VAT on that too, so a direct conversion might be around $465, but removing VAT gets you down to $387.

Some (US) statistics to chew over for what people use their console for, and the difference between 2011/2012:
