The Big Board-Gaming Catch-All

So, after dropping dice on the floor constantly, I was thinking of getting myself a dice tower or dice tray. I've seen how you can make one with some felt and a shadowbox picture frame from BGG, and though I may try that route, I'm not sure I want to do the project. I'm not as talented as a lot of you are here

Do any of you use any of these contraptions?

You don't need any talent to make a dice tray—I made one.

It's just an unfinished keepsake box with the lid taken off, with some adhesive felt on the bottom, both from Michaels and all for something like $10. Works perfectly.

May I ask where you got yours? After buying a few extra games this month, my budget ( i.e. wife ) won't allow me to spend too much.

Got mine at Compleat Strategist. It's the standard octagon-shaped one with green felt. Cost like $15.

edit: It's this one, I'm pretty sure.

Ooh - cool dice. Where did you get them?

Those are called bone dice.

Well I made my mine from the remains of my defeated Stone Age opponents (no one plays my "hardcore caveman rules" twice), but sure you can buy them too.

Note to self: Gravey is the hardest of hardcore...

Try this (scroll down a bit), we use bigger containers. It is easy and fast to plop in the dice you need, shut it, and roll. Works great for the kids that tend to drop dice a lot.

I still use my fancy dice tower when I can though.

I have one of those smaller towers that are made of plastic and can be broken down for easy travel.. and it's not that great. You need a tower with a big tray that has high walls.. I get 1+ die bouncing out and on to the table or floor about 30-40% of the time.

I've been thinking I should make my own, either out of wood or lego.. but definitely with a bigger tray

I made a tower out of legos. Worked great until one of my nephews destroyed it. Still haven't taken the time to fix it. As someone who can get kind of spastic with their die rolling, I appreciated it.

I did the same thing but I found a little wooden tray at Michael's too. Total cost of project: $4.

I need to hit up a Michael's my fiancee and her mom are terrible at rolling dice. I usually have to make them use the box lid.

Gaming accouterments are definitely nice, but after listening to this conversation this is how I now picture all of you.

Look, if you've got a better way to cut bread than with a door-stopper, I'd like to hear it.

Ever since I picked up a set of aluminum dice, I've been thinking about such a corral. I now have a project for today, thanks to the various "gardens" that are being posted up.

I mentioned it to my wife, she is the crafty one in the family, well, my daughter is too, and she brought home an 8" x 8" - 2" deep shadowbox and some self-stick felt and is attempting to make one If this works well I may have her make some smaller boxes too. When it is done I'll try and get a picture here.

This is terrible, but the side with the hinges taken off would drive me crazy because it's not "perfect."

I had about a nanosecond of thinking, "I wonder where I could find a belt sander", but then decided it's a quick homemade tray and just the screws back in to fill the holes.

Ok, this is how it came out. It works well enough and only cost us a few bucks. She bought the stuff at A.C.Moore. Sorry about the quality of the picture, I used my ipad, then did some cropping so it wasn't so huge.

Nice!

Perfect, and won't drive lostlobster crazy.

Well, he is a shellfish bastard after all Plus, it might be too deep for some dice users, so they'd have to crane their neck to look inside But it can definitely hold a lot of dice for Quarriors or some other game that uses a lot of dice.

Quick question/idea. Why not also pad the (inside) walls of the box with felt for noise reduction?

Just cos none of the dice trays I was trying to emulate did that. But it's definitely something you could do. As it stands, the wood in my box is thin and light, so it's not a particularly loud or harsh sound when the dice bounce off the walls—I actually find it a really nice sound.

As a newly owned dice box, I do like the sound, plus we didn't have the material to do all the walls with what we bought.

My new Kickstarter reward dice tower.

I can't decide between the black or the blue though.

Never did go pledge for the DICE TOWER (network, not actual tower) Kickstarter. How much money did they end up with?

They asked for $20k, ended up with $69,367.

I've seen that game a couple times in thrift stores. I was tempted to pick it up for the dice tower, but haven't .

I do appreciate the consideration.
