Minecraft Multiplayer: GWJ World

On the other hand, it's not like we've kept this world small.

I am down for large biomes. I want to get back into this and I might have a lady friend to bring along with me soon

1.5 should be out fairly soon. Anyone want to setup an official poll for large biomes?

You animal.

I don't really have a feeling either way, but aren't large biomes, like, really really large?

I think I could resurrect the old large biomes poll if we really wanted to vote on it again, but I personally haven't experimented with them enough yet to be either way, myself.

They're not as gigantic as one might think. I do play on this server once in a while and it has large biomes.

I'ts about the same size (or smaller) then our current map and has all the major biomes represented.

I'm still against large biomes. With the restrictions we usually have on exploration radius, I think we might end up limiting variety. I know the restrictions aren't enforced via mod anymore, but it's still a matter of being polite to server CPU cycles.

I guess the exception for me would be if we chose a specific seed that guaranteed all of the major biomes within a reasonable distance of start.

I don't really like large biomes. My vote is still regular.

If large biomes, I claim the Frozen Plains(Tundra) as my kingdom!

I don't care either way.

Do you know this special lady friend well enough to trust her with your minecraft secrets? What if she's just into you for your huge biomes? Oh my.

ps: Large biomes vote +1

+1 for Large biomes!

Everyone has a preference for certain biomes.

Isolating to an island created an interesting sense of community.
Maybe fewer of the same biome, would bring the people with like biome preferences together.

Thoughts?

Extreme Hills will be in high demand.
There will be strife over the use and appearance of the desert biomes.

It would be neat if we could pin down a spawn with a one of everything feel, in a restricted area. Including a large water body.
Not sure what the logistics of finding that spawn area are.

I like this one.

Though, it depends on the group that we get in the next world. I like the idea of finding a seed with a single island, or a small archipelago, and building the hell out of it at spawn, though I do recognize that there are lots of people who will want to head straight for the nearest tundra, and this would be an impediment to their fun.

I'm not close to see for myself, and not sure I will be, so who's built the redstone thingy at (51,425) and what does it do? The overviewer map shows the redstone complexity, but not the interface to the device in question.

Looks like there's a mod or two out there that give you an in-between option for biome size. Don't know if/when it will get updated for 1.5:

FYI, in my poll above, Large Biomes are winning, 16-7, at the moment.

I actually started my single player map on that a while back. It's a nice one, but haven't explored out beyond the two islands to know how close any other landmass is.

I recently bought this to play with my son and to learn how to mod.

I'll have to go back to the beginning of this thread to read the rules and whatnot, but I'm looking forward to running around with GWJers in LegolandMinecraftia.

Edit: No rules really listed in the OP. I'll go with "Don't be an asshat." for now, I guess. Assuming I get whitelisted - PM sent, LiquidMantis.

This game is so addictive.

You're good to go, duckilama. I'll PM you too so you get email notification. And yeah, that's basically the server Golden Rule. "Do unto others..." Except Quintin. That's not a good foundation for his behavior.

I think large biomes are dandy, but then I'm an explorer by nature. They are great for generating epic stories of misadventure, where the protagonist travels 10 days and nights in search of a breeding pair of sheep, only to lose one in a lava pit 8 days into the return trip

I'm not strongly aligned for any biome size, but I would ask that spawn be moved to the intersection of three or four biomes so that players will have some options at the start.

I voted for normal Biomes in the poll but its not a deal breaker either way. And just out of curiosity, why do we have to keep the map to a certain size? I know its do to some sort of server limitation, but I was just wondering what the specifics are. If its not to complicated of course, if there's one thing I learned hosting a small LAN only sever for my family, its that runing a sever can be surprisingly difficult.

If the map gets too big, it can be a pain for the map render, I believe.

Yeah, it's mainly the map renderer. But, honestly that's not such a big deal either. It renders every hour now, but if it gets too bad we just bring down the frequency. It also affects backups. But both of those more a function of how spread out players are. If more regions are being changed, more data needs to be re-rendered and backed up.

I think mcmap might not have much life left in it. I'll probably switch over to just Overviewer in the future. You can do all sorts of cool overlays with overviewer. I saw one neat one that mapped out rail systems (excluding mines, mostly)

I tried out large biomes in a single player. The only one that I really didn't enjoy was the Canadian Shield type. Basically the vanilla minecraft one with birch trees. Just endless small tree forest that you can't see through. It's the one rather expansive biome,

If it helps anyone with the large-biomes decision, you can see an example on our map. The downsides have already been discussed, but they also give the world a more "realistic" feel (if there is such a thing in Minecraft). With how much you guys love building rail systems, that seems like a bit of a win.
