Wasteland 2 Catch-All: Director's Cut!

Now, making a game. GL!

Immediately after the kickstarter opened I went overboard after some begging. I'd never pay this much for a game. It feels more like paying for a backlog of experiences which led up to right now. Wasteland wasn't the first thing in gaming by far, but it was a pivotal thing. Listening to Nolan Bushnell speak for a few minutes last night helped me understand where all of these feelings are coming from. As much as Nolan tends to jump in with both feet once he's convinced (for good or ill!), he won't show up at all for things that he doesn't believe in. His presence wasn't just a push for his latest thing. It was a signal that people like him are noticing that previous barriers to niche markets in gaming are beginning to open up in interesting ways. It was also a testament to what Brian Fargo and his teams have done in the past, and the spirit behind their work now.

I went in for $100... I just love the concept of a high quality relatively high budget CRPG.

What's the budget like for CRPGs these days?
Or more specifically, what kind of quality can we expect with this sort of money invested in the project... Like The Witcher-level?

No it wont be anything like the Witcher... thats gotta be upwards of $20M budget wise.. but in 2D I could see this still being a very slick title.

According to the internet forums, Witcher 2 cost around 8-11mln US dollars, depending on when you do the exchange (at the time of development or now). Witcher 1's being a few million more.

True, but going 2D or isometric will bring those costs down, though I'm not sure by how much. It's mostly a question of, "how many people of what experience/skill level do I need to pay, and for how long, to accomplish task X."

I can fill in none of those blanks. 3 mil sounds like a high quality but slim kind of budget.

That seems cheap for Witcher 2 and expensive for Witcher 1.

Maybe I misread about W1, but keep in mind that living costs in this part of Europe are quite lower than in the US/Western EU. Also no 100mln budget on marketing.

Very good points.

Given my experience in Hungary, I'd be surprised if the developers on The Witcher made half of what their western counterparts would have. It's probably closer to 1/3rd.

New blog entry here.

I like the look of it - a lot!

Looks in the direction I hoped/expected it to be. Can't wait to see some of the green city environments.

The models and graphics look a lot like Diablo III to me. That's a good thing.

Wow, they got the look spot on. The result of no focus-grouping.

Looks awesome. I'm still pumped.

Not much to see, but here's a video of a scene previously shown in a screenshot, taken from a talk Fargo gave at Unite 2012.

That looks EXACTLY how I want it to look!

I dig it too; and the MUSIC is aces! Very evocative and reminiscent of the original Fallout soundtrack. Which, I learned after a quick Google trip is because it's by the same composer.

I reminded me alot of the Battlefield series menu music. I liked what I heard, so I'm hopefully for that aspect of the game.

I knew it was the same composer going in so I made a point of focusing on the music. It's only 1 minute but that 1 minute gave me the same chills that every Fallout tune did.

Looks fun. Now if only I could get my original Wasteland and some paragraphs running as a prelude for this game.

It runs nicely in Dosbox, and the paragraphs PDF is available from Abandonia.

For Kickstarter backers, they're offering up a free copy of The Bard's Tale when you log in to the Wasteland 2 Ranger Center before the end of 2012.

!!!!

I've been loking for that game for a while. Is there any way to get my hands on The Bard's Tale without being a kickstarter contributor?

It's on iOS.

Backers, check your email. First gameplay footage is available. Quite sizable and yummy.

Very awesome. Can't wait to get my CE!

Well they can just shut up and take my money now. It's like Fallout 3 was just something to pass the time while I was waiting for the real game.
