If you sign up for the PC Gamer digital edition (did it through the Google play store), toward the back of the magazine there's a code for a Neverwinter beta code. The table of contents was the best place to find it, it's around page 90. You also get a mount as well, some kind of warhorse. You can get a 14 day trial to PC Gamer and just have to remember to cancel before the 14 days so you don't get billed.
From what I've read it will get you into the 2nd round of testing and not the first which starts 2/8.
Is anyone going to check out the beta this weekend? It looks like it starts Noon PST / 2pm CST / 3pm EST tomorrow.

Yep
I am still out of town till Sunday evening, so probably not this weekend;(
I need to get my PC Gamer w/the code. I forgot about that. I preloaded last night. Was pretty quick. Looking forward to playing.
The action starts around 23min in. Beforehand, it's mostly just a boring interview.
I'm excited for this now. I just hope the game can keep my attention beyond how good the action maybe.
I joined Dragon realm. Propagandalf, trickster rogue.
**Edit: Hmm, it looks like it put me on Mindflayer, even though (I think) I selected the Dragon server
playing on my laptop, internet connection is kinda flakey at the resort, so keep getting disconnected:( Milora trickster rogue and Thraxus Guardian fighter on Mindflayer.
so flakey I posted twice....
So much fun. I love the Cleric. Some definite peculiar choices so far, but it is beta. Really enjoying it. Took a Cleric to 15, a rogue to 7, and a Fighter to 7. Cleric so far is my favorite.
I'm almost tempted to just splurge for the Founder's Pack based on what I've watched so far. This game looks like a lot of fun! Apparently I will get into the 2nd round of testing so I guess I'll just be patient until then

I sprung for a Founders Pack. It has been a good purchase. I am hoping additional classes aren't part of the "pay" portion. No Paladin makes me sad.
Ya, it's disappointing that they're launching with only 5 classes. They've said they'll definitely be adding more classes post launch, though.
Have you guys tried the foundry made content yet? I haven't had much of a chance to play, I'm both sick and committed to family stuff this weekend.
They're really dumbing this down as far character creation... gameplay seems solid, but the limitations on classes is a huge disappointment for me. I spent hundred of hours just making characters in the first Neverwinter and was hoping the same here after the disaster NW2 ended up being.

I played one of the Foundry quests and it was pretty good. I think they scale to level as well. The dungeons and the skirmishes were bugged for me. Overall though the game was pretty engaging and fun. I agree with Ranalin that the dumbed down character creation is a drawback, but I can live with that. I think that's purely a result of the Fourth Edition its based off of.
Hopefully, Pathfinder Online will return a much more complex character cration system to the MMO genre.

Guess they're aiming at people like me who don't like the sheer level of complexity of character creation in modern D&D games. TOEE in particular has done my head in with the sheer number of interdependent feats, the role of skills, and all the rest of that jazz.

there's not been a good game that has been complex since the first NW. We need another!

I think Wasteland 2 will have a good system.
Gotta say, the really positive reviews are tempting but Cryptic has already screwed me twice already and I'm very hesitant to jump onto one of their products again. Is it really $200 game good?

How do you rate gaming value? I have truly enjoyed the beta. The extra bits from the Founder package will be useful. The game is F2P so you don't have to buy anything. Access to the beta, Headstart, unique race, mount, and some other stuff is what you get for money.

Just tryin' to get a read is all. I had very high hopes for Champions, and then again for STO. I'm wary, is all, and it's conflicting to read such incredibly positive comments. Don't want to jump in to another Conan but don't wanna miss a Secret World, either. I guess my biggest question is whether they figured out how to do environment scale correctly this time around.

Watch some streaming gameplay. The game plays like a DnD module. I think the long term viability is in The Foundry. I played a few created by players this weekend and they were pretty darn good.

Well speaking from Star Trek Online Foundry, some of those are just gems. I know a lot people think it just away for Cryptic to get the player base to do there work. IMO - just a good way to feel the gap once you burned out the latest Season on several toons. No MMO can keep you with fresh content 24/7.

Agreed, after researching this - feels like all current MMO's with DnD names. I was hoping for MMO with the depth of NW. I think DDO is more DnD than this...
For the moment I will wait and see. I will probably play the next beta since I think that is when the Champions and STO life accounts get invites.
** I do like the way it looks and it seems fun. I was hoping for housing at some level. Really miss a good old sandbox MMO.

Probably have to be single-player though - if they made something with as many choices as 4th ed, and made the choices meaningful, just imagine the balancing process.
Does this actually use the D&D rule set? 4th edition rules could fit into a video game pretty nicely I think.

NWN was multiplayer and it basically said 'f*ck balance'. It let you make any combination you wanted. Some were totally crap while others were super OP. I suspect though they're worried about balance in this game because it has pvp which caught me by surprise

Pretty sure that the 4th Edition Ruleset and "Spirit" was what they used to base the gameplay mechanics around, at least conceptually.
