Random thing you loathe right now.

Three hour time difference. I hate it. I'm bright eyed and bushy-eyed at 7 and it's already 10 p.m. for one of my friends.

Welcome to "Trying to hook up with people at a decent time - Western Timezones Edition!"

It's the reason I don't really play online with anyone anymore. By the time my kids are in bed, and I have time to play, it's 11:00 out East. I've gotten so used to it, I'm kind of a miser now.

Wait until you realize you have to turn on the tv at 3:30 in the afternoon to catch a full night of hockey.

Hey, let's form our own clan of Westernites. Or Pacificites. We can game on and on through the East Coast night making all those peeps jealous with sleepy rage.

Yeah, so, you can't watch at home, and you can't sit around naked at the bar. That's what they call a "naked hockey mexican standoff."

Sounds like an untapped market to me. Best set up a meeting with your local bank manager!

We have a regional one so far.

See?? I'm even cut off from the Westerners!! Reckenfreckenmackinrackin......

That so many people on the web type "based off of" when the correct phrase is "based on". When have you ever seen the intro of a movie or TV show say "based off of a true story"? Never. That's when.

Early morning shifts. Especially when someone calls in sick and I end up covering their shift. Extra hours sure, but 7 am to 4 in the afternoon on my feet slapping together sandwiches and filling god knows how many freaking 10 nugget boxes (thank again McDonald's for that freaking 40 nugget addition to the menu >.<) is not my idea of a fun time. Bright spot is the new store manager comped my lunch.

At least they aren't writing "based of have".

Where the heck do you live? West of west of the westest west?

Aries is east of the sun and west of the moon.

I live too far west to hang with eastern timezoners, yet too far east to be in Edwin and Clover's cool Cascadia crew.
I am an Albertan. Home of much farming and oil. So much redneck, so few Goodjers. I believe I can name 4 other than myself, and 1 in Saskatchewan.
The weather is really unlikely to kill you though! Unless you get frozen. Or one of the few tornados get ya.

Alberta is only one timezone away from me. We're practically related

I've been using OSX a lot at work lately. I have to restart the machine after every couple hours of constant use because the dang machine lags up like crazy for no apparent reason. Plenty of CPU and memory is available. Also, sometimes when switching back and forth between programs quickly, it won't let me select text. Minimizing out and back into the program fixes that temporarily until the next time it happens, but I have to reboot to get rid of the bug. After using Windows 7 for so long, I thought we were past rebooting as a solution.

I want to enjoy OSX because there are a lot of great things about it, but this is ridiculous.

Remember, Macs are just like every other system, warts and all. At least that's what I'm told every time I run into a situation with an Apple product acts up. Otherwise "it just works".

This sounds kind of similar to something I recently had to deal with. Open Activity Monitor (it should be in Applications/Utilities) and see if SystemUIServer is hogging the CPU when your machine lags. If it is there, are many fixes for it on the interwebs.

Can't help you with the other thing because I've never had that happen.

Yea it sounds like that machine is borked in some way. Might be hardware or it might be software. What version of Mac OS X is it running? General rule of thumb with Mac's (unlike Windows) is to always use the newest version of OS X that your computer supports.

One thing that I have found that works wonders on a Mac that is frequently beach balling is to run (insert version codename here) Cache Cleaner. Do the Deep Cleaning option. It will be the one of the longest reboots ever and it will run like crap for a bit as it rebuilds the cache and spotlight does its indexing but after a little while it will feel like a new Mac (especially if you are running an older version of the OS like 10.4 which had terrible caching issues).

For the most part my MacBook "just works", but I do have problems with my Hackintosh from time to time which is to be expected.

So I have this line of credit with TD. Last year, they decided to jack up everyone's interest rate by 3% across the board, for no other reason than pure greed. My progression goes like this:

Me: "I've been a loyal customer for over a decade and have never missed a payment on multiple credit products, most of which I paid off early."
TD: "The best we can do is lock your current rate for a year by converting your line of credit into a term loan."
Me: "Fine, do that. And cancel my chequing account."

Flash forward to a few days ago:

Me: "My loan converted back to a line of credit bit you aren't auto-debiting the minimum payment from my other bank any more."
TD (rude, clearly outsourced rep): "What do you mean?"
Me: (Spend 5 minutes explaining how they used to take the minimum payment automatically, wondering the whole time why I need to explain this to him.)
TD: "Please give me 2 minutes to check into this."
(On hold for 6 minutes)
TD: "Sorry, we can't auto-debit the minimum for lines of credit, only loans."
Me: "That makes no sense."
TD: "Sorry bro, way it is."
Me: "OK well I can manually pay the minimum every month through my other bank. I'm on EasyWeb right now though and I don't see the minimum payment listed. How do I find that out?"
TD: "I can tell you that. The minimum is X."
Me: "Yes but I don't want to have to call in every month to find out the minimum. Where can I find this on the web site?"
TD: "Please give me 2 minutes to check into this."
(On hold for 4 minutes)
TD: "EasyWeb doesn't show the minimum payment."
Me: "So you won't auto-debit the minimum payment, I have to do it manually and EasyWeb doesn't tell me the payment so I have to call in and sit on hold every single month to find it out from you? And for this privilege, I'm now paying an interest rate similar to most preferred credit cards as opposed to a line of credit?"
TD: "Sorry, EasyWeb can't show you the minimum."
Me: (CLICK)

Some mild paraphrasing was used.

I was fiendishly loyal to TD for years, they used to be the antithesis of big bank customer service. Now, f*ck these guys. I consolidated all my debt except this line of credit at a credit union last year (they didn't want the line of credit.) Now that I have history with them, I'm totally trying again. f*ck TD.

In regards to my issue, earlier this morning, I looked more carefully at the activity monitor and deduced that lack of memory was causing the lagging issue. That's what I had thought it would be. Before, I had assumed that inactive memory was free memory. Anyways, it seems that either the OS or iBooks Author has some terrible memory cache practices related to copy/paste or auto saving.

Is there a way to keep my inactive memory from exploding in size in OSX? By the time it gets to the lag point, it's taking up a third of the total memory which it should by no means be doing. It would be nice if I could just clear all of whatever it's caching in inactive memory instead of restarting the machine.

I'm guessing it's iBooks Author that's to blame.

Thanks for all the advice!

Edit: I read through the stuff a bit more carefully. It's a brand new mac mini with all the latest updates and whatnot. If I had more than 4 GB of RAM, it might not be an issue, but it still shouldn't be doing what it's doing.

Edit 2: That Cache Cleaner thing sounds like it might work, but I don't want to purchase anything for such a simple problem. Sorry for the terribly rushed posts. I've been in a rush.

This really should be in the love thread, but I answered my own question about clearing the inactive memory. All ya have to do is open the terminal and type "purge". Problem solved!

Yeah, really. Worse yet, I don't even know WHAT my schedule is for next week. She was still working on schedules today, so I'm gonna have to go in tomorrow on my one day off this week to find out what I work next week (I know I work six out of seven days next week but beyond that, I have no idea). Bad part of having a new store manager I guess... with our previous manager, she got schedules out by Thursday usually, Friday at the latest. I'm not gonna complain though, the previous GM Sheena was... well, to put it nicely, abominable. The new GM Anna is so much nicer, she doesn't yell at people like Sheena did. I don't dread each day wondering if I'm gonna have to work with the her or not.

It's just been so much more hectic and crazy since the transition, what with her getting to know the crews' strengths and weaknesses, reorganizing the stock room (I still don't know where they moved the freaking ketchup to...), and now with these new hires... oyooo

My mouse wheel is squeaky. CRC is on its way, but man am I finding it hard to not scroll through webpages with it.

EDIT: Oh yay, yard work. Exactly what I wanted to do on my one day ff this week, especially after how s****y the past couple days were. Ugh.

Checking in to your hotel and finding bed bugs. Now the scramble to find a place to sleep in starts.

Ugh, that sucks. Hope you get that sorted out, and that you will find somewhere to sleep that isn't infested.

My wife and I once had a traumatic experience with bed bugs. And by that I mean we had them in our hotel room.
