The Big Board-Gaming Catch-All

Speaking of lasercut, check this out. Space Hulk lasercut terrain on Kickstarter.

I look at that and think damn it looks lovely, but it feels like it would take less work to invent a holographic display then make a full level...

What happened to me was that I needed to hold on to Rex for my final VP, all the players went after me that were in range and I beat them all back. Then the card that either blows up Rex and everything around it or gives you a new tech based on the result of the dice row came up. Of course everybody but me voted to resolve the card, boom all my stuff is gone.
Fast forward a few turns when I finally get hold of the Imperial card, only for it to resolve in an order that meant that another player won instead of me because the revealed VP card ended the game in his favour.

Yes and it was all down to the green cards of course. 96 points off green. Was playing Leaders and Cities, got all the science leaders, lots of green and then a couple of the cards that let me copy green cards off my neighbours. Brilliant stuff.

Guys, guys. From that link for Eclipse trays, did you dig around this place?

For $35 you can get a square foot of ANYTHING lasercut out of acrylic -- even less for wood. I took that dudes SVG file he did for Eclipse, and I'm imagining i should be able to get a TON of other cool custom counters on the sheet. The mind boggles. Now I'm just trying to decide what I want!

Ayup

I've got some things in mind to keep me busy while we get dumped with snow this weekend.

I prefer to play with the "red tape" variant. What it does is put all of the objective cards out face-up from the beginning, but they are "locked" behind red tape and cannot be claimed. Objectives are unlocked via use of the Bureaucracy strategy card. It's a really nice solution as it makes all objectives known from the beginning so you can formulate some sort of strategy, but you need to work on your timing to get the objectives unlocked. It helps avoid situations like that where an objective pops up that someone can just so happen to claim.

Although, I will say your story sounds fairly typical in TI3. That's what the game is all about, like it or not I do like variants that increase your ability to strategize, though.

I could not watch more than the first minute of the intro video, because I kept imagining the guy's mom flipping cue cards between his sentences.

As for Race for the Galaxy, I don't think anyone was necessarily arguing that the theme was poor. I agree that the artwork is great and the various abilities do make some thematic sense. The theme does not carry through the mechanics very well, though. Will the theme make RftG more engaging for some? Absolutely. Does it feel like an epic space game in card form? Not really.

Epic as in Star Wars epic? No. But there IS planetary exploration, conquest, and trade. That's something.

It's just sloppy designing and I think even some space opera fans are beginning to see that. For years I heard chortles of glee about the TI3 "toolbox" approach, which means FFG throwing the kitchen sink into the game and letting the fans sort it out. Well, obviously, some fans have the energy and time for that sort of thing. I know I don't, nor do any of my game groups. Maybe it's middle age, maybe it's kids, I don't know, but I think a lot of (aging) gamers increasingly don't have time for this haphazard designing approach, and certainly not when you can get through Eclipse in an evening.

I worry about some of these guys. His KS is funded, and he now has several hundred customers to fulfill. Lasercutting takes real time, and he's just one guy with a machine in his garage, it's pretty clear. These pieces are really intricate. I can imagine a fulfillment nightmare.

I backed a guy who finished his Kickstarter just after PAX East last year. Printing isn't his delay, he only had rough designs for 25% of the things he put in the Kickstarter, and he's a perfectionist.

Ran into him last weekend at a con, believe I'll still get my stuff, but it does hurt just a little bit seeing him selling the stuff he's already finished designing while my composite order has pieces that haven't even been designed yet :/

Hmm, hopefully I don't have to worry about it, but I wonder which of my games play best by candlelight

I've been thinking of getting in on a cool Kickstarter board game but sadly I'm not sure I understand half of the pitches ("Cool! Miniatures game! Wait, I am getting the whole game of just a figure? Or just the set pieces?"). Kickstarter is not a language I speak yet.

Time to break out Waldschattenspiel!

When I was a kid, a power outage always meant running over to my friend's house, where his dad would already have the candles lit and HeroQuest set up.

So... Descent?

I would probably go with Dominion since I've got most of the cards memorized anyway. Plus it doesn't take up a huge amount of space. Though I like the idea of dungeon crawling by candlelight.

I'm a little bummed we loaned out the Netrunner cards since there would be something suitably ironic about netrunning in an old building with no power.

Create your own version. Amish: Netrunner. You play as any of Jebediah, Mose, or Abraham, trying to sneak into Old Man Yoder's barn to get at his shiny new butter churn.

Don't own that yet, mainly because I usually either play solo or with my daughter, and I know my daughter would never want to be the dungeon controller. I do have all three of the D&D games, so that is an interesting idea

Well, I was going to create Kevin Flynn and Aperture Science as custom factions but how can I say no to that?

I want a copy of that so badly...well, not badly enough to do anything about it right now, but you get my point.

Looking forward to Netrunner followed by CAH with some friends tomorrow night. The best part is that our friends are just as nasty as my wife and I are.

Still need to break out my copy of Netrunner - two player games get so little love when I have so many people to play games with! Maybe Monday night.

Tonight is game night though. Have 4 people coming, which means 1812 - the Invasion of Canada is going to get played. Can't wait. After my GF comes home from dinner, going to try to convince her to play City of Horror with us. It's a pretty fun negotiation game that's light on the strategy, so I'm hoping she can get behind it. Wish me luck.

Ravenloft or Ashartalot would look great by candlelight!

another "space themed" game I have my eye on is AMONG THE STARS.

From what I can tell, it plays a LOT like 7 WONDERS (drafting, different colored/types of cards/etc.), and has you building a space station instead of a civilization.

Next Netrunner Expansion Pack: Cyber Exodus available for preorder on Amazon, looks like it comes out on the 15th.

As for the deckbuilding aspect of the game, it's not terribly intimidating, but you can definitely spend some time tweaking a deck or two. You can just as easily play with the starting decks in the base game and have plenty of fun.

If you didn't want to buy the packs or deckbuild but want to change things up, it would also be simple to just use the new identities' special powers with the base decks. That would probably not work out so well in all cases due to lack of support cards, though.

You definitely won't get a good Runner experience using Wizzard (from the first datapack) in the base game Anarch deck. I mean, you can certainly try but that deck is a lot more effective with Noise as the identity due to the number of virii stuffed into it.

Correct me if I'm wrong.... we really didn't have to make very many modifications to the base Jinteki or Haas-Bioroid decks to make them work with the new identities.

I'm seeing double here! Four Sam Healeys!

Sweet, it was a great day today for boardgaming materials.

Amazon delivered the last Plano case I needed for our copy of Eclipse, and USPS showed up with our DnDeeples for Lords of Waterdeep and my Outfab order.

The trays look fantastic!

On Netrunner: how hard would it be to teach this to someone who'd never played a competitive deck-building game, on a scale of Dominion to Magic?

Okay, just read about Waldschattenspiel on RPS, and I want it too. Looks like I know what my next DIY project could be.
