Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Oh man Brian Blessed plays the ultimate King/Warrior/Badass, I love his character

Love the scene where they imply he dispatched half the Turkish army with a fruit knife hehe

House of Cards is so good!

I've been slowly going through the original Twilight Zone and it's just a remarkable non stop thrill ride of Shamalayan twists.

Actually a pretty cool way of seeing the fears of the 60's. Nuclear war rated high, of course, but also technology, being lost, hitchhikers, ghosts, death, space travel, strangers, the future in general, strangers and a whole slew of other things. They did manage to get some pretty amazing actors for that show and there has been one or two episodes that kept me second guessing until the end.

Also been fun to see some classics such as Burgess Meredith sitting on the steps of a library with crushed glasses.

I love the original Twilight Zone. I've also been enjoying Alfred Hitchcock presents.

"Hey, look at that weird mirror."
I really have to get round to watching those. All I saw from Twilight Zone was the movie and the reboot which I hear wasn't as good as the original.

I watched them all in syndication as a kid in the 70's. I ought to revisit them, though.

Syfy still does a marathon of them every New Years. That used to be how I spent NYE in high school, and this year I spent a quiet NYE at home and saw some episodes I had never seen before.

I have sort of a weird and (at least to me) awesome history with Twilight Zone. I was too young to have seen them originally; my first memory was seeing the 80's movie as a kid a few years after it was first released (probably late 80's) Fast forward to last summer, where I'd been helping my dad with a number of construction jobs at our cabin; installing a jet ski lift, dock repair, beach log removal, and other manly stuff. At night, on a station called MEtv, they would air Twilight Zone episodes. We'd be tired after a hard day of manual labor, but ready for the evening Zone. It was a singularly excellent feeling, sinking into a chair with sore muscles, eating a bowl of pasta or a freezer skillet meal or some shrimp avocado tacos (my specialty!), and watching TW Zone. My dad wants to install some tile in the kitchen & bathroom later this year, so with any luck I'll get to repeat the experience.

My parents watched Twilight Zone sometimes when I was younger. They freaked me the hell out. I even watched some of the 80's show and the movie. I tell you, some of those episodes stuck with me. Like the one where this guy is given a mark on his forehead and from then on, everyone in the world has to treat him as if he's not there. And another one where this super happy kid is supposed to take an intelligence test and his parents are really apprehensive and then they find out that he aced the test and is a genius so the government killed him for being too smart and that's what they were worried about all along. Or the one with the kid that can alter reality as he sees fit, so everyone in town has to pander to his ego or they'll be killed and there is no escape from him. I still get chills sometimes.

4 episodes in on House of Cards.
It is fantastic.

I made the mistake of starting it last night. The "mistake" being that I had to function at work the next day, and thus couldn't consume all the greatness I wanted. So good.

It might be a WFH afternoon.
Need more Kevin Spacey as a satrap congressman from South Carolina.

Now I just need a rib place that servers at 7 in the morning and my life will be complete(ly ruined).

We also need suits and ice-y, aryan wives.

I've started House of Cards. Great show, but every time I see Claire I can't help but think she got shot in the throat with an egg.

MAXIMUM CONVICTION!

Steven Seagal as a Louisianian redneck badass!
WATCH YO ASS

I think it's worth watching early on for the moment (about nine minutes in) when Austin and Seagal get shut down by the suit, and both look sad and a bit ashamed, after being so puffed up and ready to rumble. You can practically see the bravado deflate like a testosterone-scented balloon. It's a bit magical. Also, if Seagal talking "deep South" doesn't do something for you, either terror, laughter, or confusion, then ... mmmm I don't know what to say.

You got a dressing-down! Do not cry my lovely!

I finally watched Battle Royale and here is my question:

Spoiler:

What was up with the super soldier teacher? What is the connection there? I know he was a 7th grade teacher but was he a super soldier before? Why do they let a teacher run things?

Spoiler:

He wasn't a super soldier per se, he was simply a disgruntled adult power drunk with a government mandate.

The basic conceit of the film is that all adults are in collusion with one another. You cross 'em, you pay with your life. It takes a little leap of logic to accept it.

I've posted it before, but I really like Altered.
If you like Alien, The Thing, Fire in the Sky, Salvage, added in with a good healthy dose of redneck sensibility, well, there you go.

Added to queue. As soon as I read "Fire in the Sky", I was sold.

Netflix lets me know Futurama Season 7 is on, about an hour after my wife and I had a 3 hour marathon of season 7.

That's what I did with my Sunday. So good!

I watched the Ambassador last night.
Totally buying a khaki suit and some diplomatic papers soon.

I'm at the end is season 5 after getting the free trial about 5 days ago.

Now, I'll need to be able to see good movies on there. I got the Canadian version of Netflix.

The news is not shiny. In the never ending battle between service and infrastructure, we have a Mexican Stand-off of finger pointing, with consumers as the damsel in distress in the middle.

Thing is, the movie selection in the US is not that great either. Even before streaming, Netflix was how I got Television DVD sets without dropping upwards of 60 bucks on sets. I have a few friends who went to DVD only with Netflix because of the poor film selection. For me, more and more I am getting movies from Amazon to rent. It took nearly 3 years for the King's Speech to get into Netflix.

I've come to view Netflix as an awesome a la cart cable channel with an insanely good selection of syndicated TV shows. Movies are a bonus.

So yes, if movies are a big deal, Netflix might not be so must have. But there are years of great TV to watch. And it is so much better and cheaper than renting DVDs.

I think Netflix is purposely moving in this direction. Series keeps subscribers in place for so much longer.

As we purge our monthly expenses, my wife put Netflix on the block. Her thought was that when her and my daughter finish up Dr. Who, she will make a clean break. But I warned her that Jordan was already finding new series, like Being Human. Sure enough, she reacted poorly. I told my wife that if we want to cut it, then we should just do it. There will never be a good time. But I also pointed out how few movies we actually rent, and that Netflix is equal to two or three a month.

It really is a good value. Its easy to see what it lacks, but for $9 a month, it provides a ton of content.

Hey, would ya look at that...

I got a phone call from Charter asking me to buy cable. I said no thanks, I have Netflix streaming. The lady tried to convince me I needed cable because content is usually out for a few months before Netflix gets it.

So I asked her, if I have no point of reference, what's the difference to me if I see something right now or in six months? She didn't have an answer for me, never mind one good enough for me to pay another $90 per month.

...so that new season of Walking Dead is pretty good, right you guys?

Do what my wife and I do, grab it on Amazon Instant the Monday after it airs.

I won't pay $90 for cable or satellite. I have DirecTV, but that's because they got me a deal that essentially makes it $38 a month, including NFL Sunday Ticket. When my two-year deal runs out, I will probably drop it again, or force DirecTV to make a deal to retain me.

OTA TV and Netflix provides more than enough content to keep one entertained. Throw in an Impatience Tax of sorts, and you can even get episodes of most current cable shows, like Walking Dead, the day after they air. The $38 is paying for some convenience, and access to hockey and baseball.
