Interesting Kickstarter Catch-All

Yeah, i kinda went big prior to the holidays. The cool thing is I should have some neat toys showing up shortly, like a new quadcopter, a robotics building set, and some electronic experimenters kits.

See this is why my wife is in charge of the funds and she tells me to stay off kickstarter... I want all of that.

My OneTesla Tesla coil should be here in April.

It might be time to block Kickstarter at my firewall.

I've been meaning to make one... (insert evil laugh here) will they be selling them after the kickstarter rewards go out?

My wife got excited about those socks so I had to back that.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain they plan to. I mean they'd be fools not to as they had to limit the Kickstarter as they were getting too many orders. They have a store set up already: http://onetesla.com/

Yeah I told my wife about it and we funded it within minutes.

This project for the Robo 3d printer has me temped, but I'd have to lay out about $650, which is no chump change. Plus I could conceivably get a Prusa Mendel kit right now for about the same price, which is a printer that's already established and fairly popular and not have to deal with the usual kick starter risks and waiting for order fulfillments.

Oh, plus I have no clear plan on what I'd use it for. Custom game figs? Whatever, I still think it would be bad ass to build and have.

Anyone round these parts tinker with 3d printers?

Maybe.

Is there any kind of hackerspace nearby? That might wind up being a better deal, especially if you can group-fund a 3d printer if they don't have one already.

We've got a place around me that has tons of equipment that is quasi-donated from members. Stuff like pottery kilns, two laser cutters, a 2-post lift, tons of electronics tools, a mostly complete woodshop, etc. Membership is pretty cheap per month too, so you don't have to outlay anything more than materials.

As for KS stuff: Zero to Maker. I don't really get it. The guy already has a blog on MAKEzine.com (since August of 2011), so why does he need a Kickstarter? Why isn't O'Reilly just throwing an advance at him to write the damn book?

I like the idea, because it's basically what I think of myself and what I want to be, but I'm not getting the need for the Kickstarter...

Hooray reward day!

Just got my copies of Ground Floor and Skyline in the mail today. Both are from Tasty Minstrel Games, and designed by David Short.

Ground Floor is a worker placement/resource management game about building up your business and sky rise building.

Skyline is a dice rolling/bidding game about building the best skyline amongst all the players.

Can't wait to get both these on the table!

Anyone post this?

Looks really cool.. I think I might order one.

That's a great idea for a desk. Not sure I'd want to drop that much money on a single project though :\

Having priced out desk prices recently, $400 is actually pretty reasonable for a solidly build desk. Not that I have that on hand to put towards a desk at the moment...

I'd love to create a desk like that. I'd buy one but I only have a 3 foot area to work with. Looks like the desk is 5 feet long. Unless I want 2 feet overlapping my fireplace it's a no go

What could possibly go wrong?

I would be so nervous about my tower being suspended like that. I would also want the stretch goal of a headset rack. Pretty good idea concept, I'll be surprised if they pull off the 75K needed.

I'm more nervous about pledging $400 for something that, if backed, may never get sent to me.

That said, that looks like a great desk other than the logo.

But... Dave is a product and graphic designer! How could he mess up the logo?

I like the idea, but I'm with most of the other folks in the thread - just too much risk on this one. And I'd rather spend $600 (his eventual MSRP) upgrading a PC and still have to "deal" with cable management. It's not a big enough pain for me to drop that much on a table.

(I'll just make hay with this double post...)

Hull Breach -it's an LCG about corporate nation states battling it out in space. The goal of the game - wipe out your opponent's station.

There's a currency and materials economy that you generate each round with your station, which you then spend to buy ships, Marine units, drones, upgrades, and event cards. The ships range in size from fighter wings all the way up to capital ships, with bigger ships able to carry more stuff.

The combat is handled by rolling D10s, with each card having a target number that needs to be hit to receive damage.

I gave this a few plays at TempleCon in Warwick, RI yesterday, and its really fun. Each box set will MSRP for $40, coming with dice and 3 faction decks, and a few tuning cards. Additional reinforcement packs will be available, and like other LCGs the contents of the packs will be known, but they will be focused more on themes than sets. For instance, if you'd like to include more drones in your decks, you buy the drone pack. Want more Marine units, or cards that augment Marines, buy the Marine pack.

The $100 pledge level will include both the first and second expansions once they hit $55k in funding.

Pirate card game, anyone?

Conquering Corsairs

I know one of the designers, but haven't had a chance to play it. By all accounts it is good fun.

Tom Hall's back on Kickstarter with a slightly more modest goal: A spiritual sequel to Commander Keen.

From the makers of Horn and Dark Meadow, Project Awakened. This is a Chicago development company where most Chicago GWJers know at least one of their employees. $25 (or $20 early bird special) gets you this hugely ambitious game and close beta access ... in late 2014.

I'm interested, but $45 for a card game is way too much.

August 2014? I might have forgotten all about this by then! I'll admit that it does look awesome and I'll probably throw $20 towards this.

That's not an uncommon price for card games at all. Very reasonable.

Is there a way to get reminders on expiring kickstarters either through email or some other way? There are a couple I may be interested in, but I want to wait until the last day before I get a good look at where my finances are. (Both of the ones I'm thinking of are already funded, so it's not an issue of hedging my bets or anything).

There should be a "Remind Me" button on the page (usually underneath the banner image/video for the project), which will trigger a reminder email when the drive has 48 hours remaining. It's really subtle unfortunately.

Maze of Games puzzle book. I came across this last week, but after hearing discussion about it on this week's Major Nelson podcast, decided to back it.
