NCAA Football 2013-2014 discussion

Since we just talked about it, I'll add that Kentucky did the "hire the coach" trick with the JUCO guy that we lost.

Also, I don't think anyone here is particularly interested (except maybe MBHz and boogle), but t.u. is suffering from a lot of last-minute decommits as well. One just left them today for Baylor of all places. The rumor is that they literally have no defensive line recruits now.

Yeah, sounds a little too magic to me. The kind of magic that gets you sanctions later.

But not until the coach has left for greener pastures, amiright?

Hey now, Mr. Freeze invited those with cold, hard facts to email Ole Miss and they will look into things. Sounds legit!

I do want to add that in general, I don't agree with people throwing out the whole "School X got Y recruit, they're dirty!" line that's all over the Internet. The only reason I'm playing around with Ole Miss is the sudden, last-minute commitments of several of the most desireable recruits in the country.

Well, I have to believe that the folks above Freeze know that any hint of improprieties would be very bad. Ole Miss is one of those schools that the NCAA doesn't mind making an example of. I mean, it's not like they are Alabama or Ohio State. They are the type of mid-level school that would get the death penalty just to prove they (the NCAA) was willing to still bring that ax down.

I'm guessing that if Penn State didn't get the death penalty for enabling a pedophile rapist, no one else will, either.

And they just gave Ohio State a year with no post-season, which is no small thing, especially with them having such a great year.

Not exactly defending the NCAA, just sayin'.

Hogs signed a five star back and when Denver Kirkland announces tomorrow we'll have one of the best o-line in the country. The flip might put us into the Top 25 which is pretty amazing since Bielema and Co. followed the worst coaching staff in college football history. Meanwhile our former QB is getting looks as the #1 pick for the draft. Petrino left an incredibly talented team that was poorly coached and Bielema is patching some holes. I expect the Hogs to be back in the fight no later that 2014.

A local kid (OT) got a preferred walk on offer from Arkansas and I'm super excited to watch him get developed by Pittman.

All of our commits are in as far as I know, and there are a couple kids making announcements that we are in on.

Lots of last-minute flips today, but nothing involving is right now.

Vonn Bell to Ohio State. Ugh f*ck you Urban Meyer.

Well Cal signed volume with 25 new Bears inc 3 or 4 that have enrolled early. 1 more anticipated and that should do it for us.

You seem to have spoken too quickly regarding your five-star back, sir!

Lol not sure if its true but the twitter-land is going with a story about Alex Collins mom has made off with his LOI for Arkansas because he wants her son to go to Miami.

Yep, that's what I was referencing.

Last year, we had a recruit's mom forge his signature and fax it to some other school. High drama! It got sorted out that same day, though.

One of the two guys we were in on who did announcement ceremonies today picked us - the guy we weren't sure about (Hall).

The guy we were sure about (Prevot) picked Oregon instead. He took a January trip there while he was a USC commit, but never made many comments about it afterwards. Every expectation was that he was going to A&M.

We lost (as I just mentioned earlier this week) a recruit at the last minute to Oregon last year, too - although in that case the recruit had been committed to us, and for a long time, and very verbal about the Aggies. Never a whisper about Oregon.

It seems like Oregon is playing some kind of game where they are flipping recruits in the final days (not strange), but telling them not to say one word about Oregon until Signing Day. I'm not really sure what the deal with that is, and it's hard to imagine Oregon sees A&M as a rival that they want to submarine - or if they do, in a national sense, it's hard to imagine they felt that way a year ago.

In any case, we still have possibly a top-five class this year, and I wish the NCAA hatchet men Godspeed in deciding what they're going to do to the Ducks.

Silent commits help create buzz on signing day. Of course if your silent commit decides to sign at Ole Miss, then you really don't get any benefit.

Dawgs did pick up a nice DE who had recently decomitted from FSU and didn't lose any of their verbals.

Seems like the same news here, for Louisville.

We have this 4-star LB Jermaine Grace coming up to make his decision between us and Miami in 15 min. And the 7 of the 8 Rivals analysts think he's choosing Louisville. After that I guess the day is done.

My father has reminded me that A&M flipped none other than Johnny Manziel from Oregon two years ago (though not at the last minute), so yeah, maybe they do have it in for us.

Also, he hypothesized that Oregon may not want recruits talking about Oregon and giving other coaches a chance to respond by negatively recruiting regarding Oregon's inpending sanctions.

And apparently they were wrong. He picked Miami. Guess he'd rather lose to us in a couple years. :p

Well it's always f*ckING something isn't it? Mom must be a whacko.

Cal looks like it ended up in the 29/30 spot nationally per scout, rivals and ESPN. Pretty much as expected, and given the circumstances, not sure we could have asked for much more. If we held onto Hunt maybe we end up top 25, but whatever. Key thing is we ended up with 5 more offensive lineman and if 1 or 2 can blossom into solid starters I'll be happy. We also picked up a handful of WRs including a flip from Boise State. We're pretty full at that spot, but given Dykes' offenses the more the merrier there.

As they stay, after today, the number of stars don't matter anymore.

As they stay, after today, the number of stars don't matter anymore.

Read a couple of articles leading up to signing day that stated that more than 40% of 5 stars are bust and that several of the projected first round NFL drat prospects this year were 2 and 3 star kids out of high school.

That's all good, but there are also articles that show that there is a strong correlation between stars and how the player turns out.

Obviously there are tons of exceptions, but top recruits become top players at a higher rate than 2 and 3 stars.

Yep, they showed how Notre Dame had a top 10 recruiting class for like 4 of the last 5 years, but this year is the only time they actually finished in the top 10. Recruits != winning.

For one thing a lot of the classes are ranked by total stars. So you take the max 25 guys and you get a better rating than a school that is returning a lot of players and only takes 15-20. Although I've seen some "average star rating" ranks pop up a lot more recently, which changes things up a bit.

See here, at rivals. Click on Average star rating and you get quite a different list. USC, UCLA and Texas are suddenly in the top 10. And the SEC only has 4 of the top 10 classes instead of the 6 they have the other way.

There's definitely stuff to get excited about, when a particular need is fulfilled, or a star skill player gets signed. But still, until they're on the field, it doesn't matter much.

I agree with all of that, too. Just, on average, one would be better signing a 5-star than a 3-star.

The Big 10 will stop scheduling FCS opponents for their out of conference games.

Cue jokes on the Big 10 itself being an FCS conference in 3...2...1...

Beyond that, I think this is a good move, an important move that others should follow.

Finally.
