WarThunder (not World of Planes) - Catch All

Pages

This has just started Open Beta

http://warthunder.com/en/

Signed up for the beta yesterday.

Got a chance this past fall, to play it for a few minutes at an airshow. Could be a fun game like World of Tanks is but, for me I have a feeling the flight is not arcade(y) enough for me. Granted I was playing on a laptop, under an awning, in the rain and, with unfamiliar flight stick.

I have played it, and it just seems very sluggish and hard to manuever for a flight game.

There are mouse controls that are very arcade-y. All kinds of levels of control it seems. I'm still trying to figure out what works best for my limited flight skills.

I've been doing the tutorials. Posted about it in the F2P thread.

My name if anybody wants to friend me is MannishBoy.

Oh, so this isn't World of Planes. Hmm... may try and give it a shot then.

Seems that mouse control on the Arcade mode is actually better than using a stick. Much easier to keep the planes stable.

Beta stuff to work out I hope. Should be at least equal.

It is WoP just a name change. In fact the youtube video even shows the 2 names side by side.

Better on keyboard? Really?

In arcade mode, it seems I'm not the only one to think so.

I think the confusion stems from the fact that this is not World of Warplanes, from the World of Tanks people. I was under the assumption it was that game too.

Downloaded last night and will be checking it out soon. I played a few of the tutorial missions today, and it worked pretty well using a 360 controller.

I've been putting a fair bit of time into this in the past few days. I really like it; it scratches that same World of Tanks itch. It is nice that my two friends and I can make a squad without having to be premium; we always hated that about WoT's. It will be interesting to see how World of Warplanes stacks up overall.

I started using mouse controls, then I tried my flight stick; the stick was unplayable for me. I was having a rough time using mouse aim to pull off any maneuvers; turns out I wasn't using the aileron/rudder controls (WASD) at all. I am staying alive a lot longer now.

It is also cool that there are campaign missions and stuff that you can do co-op. So far I have resisted giving them any money but, I don't know how long I can hold out.

Any word on when they are going to release Ships and Ground to the beta test?

Ya i spent a couple hours in this over the weekend as well. On one map i got shot down but was able to land and took 4 people out with my rear gunner! I was giggling like a mad man while doing it. Loads of fun.

How big is the War Thunder install?

War Thunder was just Green Lit on Steam.

Still been putting a lot of time into this. The grind through lvl 9+ is tough. You can see that is where they plan on making their money from.

I have put in enough time that I went ahead and bought the Ultra Starter pack. Came with 2 months of premium time, 10K of Gold Eagles, the US and Japanese mission packs and several premium planes.

Im going to download this sucker now. I thought world of tanks was interesting with great balance of action and simulation but sitting in a tank never seem that much fun to me personally. But world of tanks infrastructure with planes seems way more appealing to me. Sign me up!

big... I think last I checked it was 6 GB. They update it constantly though -- almost daily it seems at times.

I've been playing a decent amount of this over the past week or so. I have to say that it's a danged fun flying game. Once you get past the Reserve planes and start to get ones with a little more combat power, the game really takes off. I still suck at the air-to-air, but I'be become the nemesis of arty, AAA, and convoys of vehicles.

It seems to have some depth to it, as well. I just discovered that I can add bombs to some of my fighters and can allocate skill points to my pilots, gunners, and ground crews to make them better/faster/stronger. I actually like that crew leveling mechanism much more than World of Tanks. It's a freakin' grind to get your crew some skills or perks in that game.

Just remember to not put points into Gunnery if its a fighter. I wasted a small amount of points on several planes thinking it would help with me being the gunner.

Well, you can just swap that crew to a bomber later if you've wasted them. I did that.

Anything on the second screen of crew is worthless for a single pilot plane.

You could yes BUT, I'm running mostly fighters int he German line.

The only bombing I really do is, an Me-410 with a couple 500kg bombs for a suicide run at the beginning of the match. Only put 5min if fuel in it and, bust some ground targets with the bombs then, strafe more until the wings are shot off. That usually only takes about 2 min tops. It nets me 5-10 ground kills and, usually keeps several enemy fighters occupied.

Ha! I was about to do the same thing for my fighter until I saw the "Gunners: 0" on the that skill tab. I'm mostly dumping my points into Keen Vision, Visibility, G-Tolerance, and Reload Speed.

I just unlocked my first bomber, the Havoc, so I'm basically waiting for some ungodly number of skill points so I can get another gunner.

If you want to make money by turning off auto repair; dump points in Repair Speed and Rank as well to reduce repair time in the hangar.

Here is a good video that goes through the skills.

Alright, this video from Da Squirrels Nuts sold me...

Downloading right now. I was not entirely pleased with World of Warplanes. Too arcadey. This seems a bit fiddly, but... we shall see.

Wanderer, probably the biggest Youtuber doing War Thunder is Mighty Jingles. TigerBill's vid is form him.

I've also watched some from SideStrafe and a couple of others that also do World of Tanks vids.

Be interested to hear your thoughts once you try it. As I was telling you on twitter, at Arcade level, joysticks are a handicap. Hope they've got them tuned a bit better at realistic. It's not that they're unflyable, it's more that shot deviation seems higher on joysticks than mice, and that ends up leaving you with more assists than kills, especially compared to flying with K&M. That said, Arcade mode is still fun with K&M.

Has anybody tried this on something pretty low end? Tempted to try to download it to my ultrabook to try in the hotel. I surprisingly got The Hunter working the other day.

A buddy of mine plays on a Macbook of some kind, through Boot Camp. I believe he runs the graphics on low. They have a weird glitch where, if your rig isn't up to snuff the tail wobbles real bad; to fix it you need to turn the graphics way down.

I've signed up as karmajay. Downloading tonight but won't be on till tomorrow.

I forgot how big the client was. I'm not going to try to download it over hotel internet. Maybe try it when I'm home this weekend.

I had fun this morning so I'll play more. Although I can see it being a grind when your low level planes has to go against planes a few levels higher.

I also see how they nickel and dime ya. Buy a plane, oops it costs to put the plane in service, oops you need a crew, etc, etc. I guess that is the model though!

TheWanderer1 is my handle. Please friend me up.

I'm using the 360 pad. I want to hit a button on the pad, any button, and have that activate one of the sticks to act as my freelook. For the life of me I can't figure out how to do that. Anyone?

I flew maybe 6 hours in the last few days. Did VERY little arcade mode. It was a route of the nicer planes vs.... everyone else. I did a lot of reps in the Historical Battles mode, got good with the Russian rockets so that I can reliably take out a tank here and there. Dogfighting is pretty fun, but again here planes with cannons rip you apart when and where they want to.

Just this morning before work I stepped into a Real Historical Battle, or whatever they call the top tier. Taking off I flipped the plane right on it's damn nose and pancaked into the tarmac. Taking off with a crosswind is a Female Doggo.

Second mission I plinked a heavy tank with a missile, then got into a quick, nasty little dogfight with a German 110. He had more speed since I'd stopped short on my last parabola of the strafing run and out climbed me in the end.

But peeking over the nose with zoom, looking for dots against the skyline, clouds of smoke from moving ground units... very nice sense of realism in that mode. I think I'll be spending most of my time there. You also get a lot more experience for taking out single ground units, which is about all I can muster on most maps.
