Aliens: Colonial Marines Catch-all (Pop out of your chest-all?)

Somebody on the Gearbox forums mentioned this site.

http://www.getgamesgo.com/product/al...

You can get it for $30 with coupon code LV-426.

I've never used the site before, but figured I'd give it a try for $20 off. Apparently they email you the Steam key when it's up for pre-load.

I should not have watched that trailer. I'm having a hard time believing that footage is from a current gen console, what with the stodgy animation and flat faced marines. That's a real disappointment because I know I have to get the game and I have to play it. I trained one of my friends to play fps games just for this release.

That would really suck if it were bad.

If I hadn't played it already that multiplayer video probably wouldn't have sold me too much. It was cut rather horribly together.

But I'm excited to play as Aliens. In fact, I'm excited altogether.

Dammit, why can't this be releasing Tuesday instead of Dead Space?

Still looking for people to play on PS3,

"Is this going to be a stand-up fight sir or just another bug-hunt?"

I'm not worried about the graphics. As long as the gameplay is good, I'll be happy.

Actually, what platform are people getting this on? SallyNasty mentioned Xbox I think, but most folks seem to be going PC. I'm leaning towards 360, but if not enough folks are getting it on that platform I'll swap to PS3.

GLEEEE!!!!!! Can't wait!

Man, I so want this game to be good, but I'm just too scared to preorder. I've been burned too many times already. I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid.

Yeah. I really need a demo. I just can't work past my misgivings on this one.

If I do end up biting, it'll be the 360 version.

The latter does not bode well for the former.

Though that's strange, I thought one of the big gimmicks of this game was it had Battlestar Galactica writers on board penning the story? Or is it merely that the BSG dude did an outline and the Gearbox staffer is doing the nitty gritty.

Know what, I did a little Googling, and he's not the writer for Colonial Marines. His title is Chief Creative Champion, which they don't get into during the show, but sounds like he's more or less a "mini Creative Director". But he did write Borderlands 1, some of the Brothers in Arms stuff, and a few books.

Also the voice of Scooter.

IGN had a two hour quicklook with the developers last night, and it ran to about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Mostly just gameplay and nothing particularly unexpected. I skipped over a few of the multiplayer matches but here are the interesting tidbits I gleaned:

- Some of the aliens will run at you and die easily (like those from ALIENS) but some are a lot tougher and will try to ambush you (like the one from ALIEN). Apparently all the new alien types are canon. They worked with FOX and Cameron and all and got the seal of approval. All their weird giant bull aliens and fart aliens and suicide aliens are now just as legit as the classics.

- Marines and aliens get custom loadouts for multiplayer. The aliens get to pick their moveset and abilities. Some of the alien "items" include things like a hollow exoskeleton for faster movement, a thicker one for more durability, regeneration, etc. There are pickups you can find to transform into the tougher alien forms.

- Multiplayer is a lot like L4D, with teams of four taking turns as aliens or marines. There are some objective-based modes and some straight-up killin-dudes modes. When playing as the alien, you see the game from a third-person over the shoulder view that is always oriented to the ground, even when the alien is on the ceiling or wall.

- Instead of having just a huge list of achievements, the player is presented with a set of challenges they can complete to unlock new items. As soon as they complete one challenge, another opens up.

- Weapons can be customized with various attachments and paint jobs. There are two kinds of Pulse Rifle in the game. The Mk 2 is fully customizable. The Mk 1 is not, and is the one from the movie. There are also "legendary" weapons you can find in single player (like Hicks' Shotgun).

- In single player you gain experience to gain credits you can use to unlock an item or ability of your choice.

- There's a "Bad-Ass" difficulty mode where you have no HUD and aliens deal extra damage. Your only ammo counter is the one on the side of your gun, if you're using a gun that has one.

I remember this was one of my questions at PAX East last year after I saw the video. The first Alien encountered did more hit-and-run and diving between cover, and a lot of the rest were much more straight forward. She confirmed different sorts of Aliens had different kinds of A.I. and thus would behave differently, which should keep this from being "just another bug hunt".

Still excited.

Excellent!

"You secure that s#*t, Hudson!"

Think of how you'll be kicking yourself when you buy it full price days after release because of all the excited posts. Of all the fun you'll have - when not playing with me

Curse, enablers. Enablers every one.

Damn it, I hope the bad-ass mode also turns off hit indicators. Every video I've seen has those stupid indicators and it drives me crazy. Hopefully at least an option!

I don't think it turns off the raspberry jam, but that seems to be the only way you know how injured you are. I'd be cool if you started limping and breathing heavily like in Left 4 Dead. Or maybe if you had a button to check your magazine and while you were doing that you could tell how injured you were by looking at various scrapes and wounds on your forearm. Or they could go the Jurassic Park: Trespasser route and put your health meter as a tattoo on your boobs.

By the way, GMG is selling the season pass at 10% off. At some point I saw another discount code floating around that would bring it down to about $20 but I'm not ready to bite on that, yet. I'm psyched for the game, but I think I'm going to wait until I know exactly what I'm getting into (both in terms of gameplay and additional content) before I sink another $20 into it.

Yeah, you just earned some serious street cred.

If this game is solid it will make me get a Wii U.

Well, you can get it for a different system. I wouldn't base my purchase of a Wii U on this game, maybe on a Wii U exclusive or something.

Based on the long IGN play-through video, some people were discussing the merits of having the traditional radar blip only ping when the tracker is pulled out. Some bemoaned it saying it would kill tension not to have it always on and chirping away, others said it would be annoying having it constantly pinging at 100mph during skirmishes, killing any tension through monotony. I tend to fall on the former argument.

I am curious how that will be handled via the Wii U gamepad.

Nah... I mean I'm sure I'll eventually end up getting a Wii U (whenever the new Smash Bros game comes out ) but this is the first game that really interests me on the Wii U, and it would tip me in the direction of buying one if it turned out to be good. Anyway, I'm hoping for the best, expecting the worst. The aliens franchise so needs another good game!

I think that having your tracker out should be a tactical choice. In the movies, it was a pretty bulky device. There was one mounted on the Smartgun (either as part of its own tracking systems or to take advantage of the weapon's already sizable harness) but otherwise you couldn't be aiming a gun and looking at the tracker at the same time. If anything, I don't like that it chirps at you when it detects something new. I think it ought to be up to the player to stay vigilant about it.

I can understand how some people might find it important for tension, as in the movies it absolutely was. But those movies were scripted that way. In a game, it's much different. They can't really pull off the, "tons of movement but no visual contact" trick more than once or twice.

I dunno, I found it pretty effective throughout all of AvP2.
