NFL 2012 Super Bowl Thread

I haven't picked in a while, but I'll jump back in for this one. Having the 49ers in there make it easy since I loathe them. Kappy is a hell of a player, though.

Ravens

Enjoying the SportsNation on ESPN now. Nice little rap "Greatest of All Time" talking about Jerry Rice.

This may have been posted elsewhere, I don't know, but Bill Simmons just wrote what I thought was an amazing piece on PEDs in sports at Grantland:

I've found Simmons' writing to be annoying for several years, but that was an excellent piece. And I agree with pretty much all of it.

@Fedaykin98, I doubt it was posted anywhere else. Simmons' column usually doesn't get posted until 6pm EST. I liked the piece. Agreed with his assessments of Lewis and Peterson.

I remember when McGwire was going on his runs and the one reporter confronted him about what he had in his locker? Didn't the media on a whole submarine that guy and pretty much side with McGwire?

pretty much agree with it all.

I would be 0 shocked if Lewis was doping or that whatever the f*ck is on his arm is actually from the future and is a terminator prototype.

Super Bowl Prop Challenge

Deadline is 5:30pm on Super Bowl Sunday.

49ers

@Jayhawker and @Sheared, if you two pick different teams, it guarantees that Certis can't win the year outright.

I should have coasted to a win, but really blew it late. I also have two picks of the chiefs that I knew better.

So I'm just gonna proclaim myself the Champ and pick the Ravens.

Any tie-breaker ideas, or do we care?

Tie breaker is whoever has the most gingery beard.

I've done some soul searching. I think the Ravens have the best chance to win, but I like the 49ers more since they're kinda fun. So I'm going 49ers.

49ers

Ravens

But I don't feel good about it.

Great article!

Tie breaker should be prop bets on the draft.

But I already dyed my beard!

As the (still technically) reigning pick em champ, I'm thinking something up for the tie break.

When the Ravens win, the tie-break will be unnecessary.

Serious question: Is it the 49ers Harbaugh who's the notorious asshole? I need to know who to root against.

No that would be Detroit's Jim Schwartz.

This. Neither Harbaugh is an asshole. Jim Schwartz is the kind of guy that will cuss out players on the other team and then get butt-hurt over a perceived post-game handshake slight.

Jim Harbaugh is... animated... and every emotion is expressed all over his face, but he's not a jerk.

Harbaugh told his father on draft day that he thought Colin Kaepernick was the best player in the draft.

I wish I had made my own ranking of Kaepernick so bold. I thought I was being bold by rating him with a 1st round grade, and above Newton, Locker, Gabbert, and Dalton.

I slid Kaepernick down a bit because as high as I was on him, I didn't see the adjustment to the NFL happening this fast. I thought the project would take longer. Instead, Greg Roman successfully changed the NFL-style offense to suit Kaepernick, rather than the other way around.

Of course, I also had Ryan Mallett high in that draft. I'm not given up on that one, though. I expect that he will either get seasoned into the heir apparent for Brady, or get traded to another team that wants him to compete to start.

One of our sports writers would beg to differ. He (the sports writer) covered the Wake-Stanford game in W-S a few years back. Apparently Jim pissed and moaned the whole time about the cross-country travel, the early (for a West Coast team) kickoff and various and sundry other slights.

The word our writer used to describe him was d!ck.

That said, Jim Harbaugh was my QB on my very first fantasy football team. So that more than cancels out his d!ckishness.

49ers vs. Ravens

Warren Sapp makes the Hall of Fame. Two Bucs now, three next with after Derrick Brooks. Sapp may be an obnoxious douchebag, but he was astoundingly disruptive in the interior for a good number of years. Homersim woo!!!

Also, finally, Cris Carter in. Larry Allen, Jonathan Ogden, and Bill Parcells are the other three modern-era candidates. That is a pretty impressive class.

Allen and Ogden were the two that absolutely had to go in.

I'm good with Sapp getting elected ahead of three sack-tallying edge rushers. Of course, Sapp's own sack tally helped his case.

Of all the skill position players, Cris Carter was the one I'd choose. He should have gone in last year instead of Curtis Martin. He really should have gone in 2008 instead of Art Monk.

I want to see Eddie D go in. I'd probably have picked him before Parcells but I don't really have strong feelings about which one goes first, as they'll only elect one non-player at a time. Eddie can go next.

So, is there an over/under for the number of times Phil Simms' assaults Logic, Reason, and the English language?

+/-10 times.

Spoiler:

I'm taking the over.

Super Bowl Prop Challenge, we only have 8 players so far.

Spoiler:

So will everyone else.

49ers vs. Ravens, mostly because that is who I prefer to win.
