Playstation 4

We could call it "hypertext".

It is valuable to have the source material so one can formulate their own opinions instead of getting the info solely through another person's filter/interpretation.

PS4 is the Steambox?

The neXtbox is just a small PC running windows 8?

I'm pretty happy with the rumoured specs so far (4GB DDR5, 8 - 1.6ghz core processor etc), to think what Naught Dog & Guerrilla can do on these specs will be scary, especially if the development is much easier being based more on PC architecture. That will be a massive boost for Sony & its next Playstation the fact that its gonna be slightly more powerful than the next Xbox (if rumours are true), it doesn't have the development headaches of the Cell & its got serious first party support. I am interested to see if they deviate from the Dual Shock controller even a slight bit, I personally think they should drop PS Move as its been nothing short of rubbish (Kinect has been even worse) so go down the route of what Valve were talking about with the biometrics, a more responsive controller with wrist & finger actions being further tracked in new ways.

13mb animated gif? No. No no no. - Certis

True, but more often writers just drop a link in, and then don't make a point. Include a citation, but I shouldn't have to go back to the source to understand your point. If I have to go back to the source, you've failed in convincing me.

Errr, do you mind linking that 14MB gif?

I've been playing of the Dust 514 and Crysis 3 betas on my PS3, and let me tell you - when all the developers default to map the gun triggers to something other than your trigger buttons, those buttons need a redesign. With two full redesigns, you'd think Sony would have altered them at some point. I hope they fix this with the next console.

Or the developer could allow you to remap the controls.

That's...missing the point, really. I would re-map them if the triggers were any good, but they're not. The issue is the physical design of the triggers, not the ability to remap controls.

It's pretty bad that the $5 add on triggers make them so much better. The solution is at hand.

Eh, I just got the thing, didn't know they made those. In any case, for now the solution is to continue buying shooters on 360. Just sayin', I hope the official Sony controllers for PS4 address this issue. Better sticks'd be nice, too.

It is my hope that the hardware synergy will lead to some actual software innovations. The 3D engines are impressive looking, which I love, but I want to see more dynamic and living worlds where emergent gameplay comes not only from the player, but also the game itself. I want something approximating true artificial intelligence. Something akin to Valve's game director, but more advanced.

I don't know why so many people expect the L2 and R2 to be shaped like a trigger as if they were designed for FPS games. I don't even know why people want the aiming and fire buttons to be L2 and R2 either. It has always felt far more natural for me to use L1 and R1 on the Playstation controller, and superior to the way it feels compared to L2/R2 and 360 triggers. Keep in mind this is FPS specific.

Part of it is continuity of design. Most of the first person shooters I played from the prior generation used the bottom shoulder button to fire (Halo, Timesplitters, Killzone).

Regarding Killzone in particular, that franchise used L2/R2 in the first game, then switched to L1/R1 for the PS3 versions. Doesn't that tell you something about the physical design of L2/R2 on the Dual Shock 3?

Oops, my fault. Whenever a new PS3 is purchased it's my duty to link to Real Triggers. You can find them at Walmart even. Must haves.

I go back and forth between the two controllers and, while I prefer the 360 controller, the PS3 controller is perfectly fine. I was a PS1 and PS2 owner, so that probably helps.

For things like that, while I'm sure better hardware helps to an extent, I think the bigger problem is that it's, well, a hard problem to solve and make that content. And if it doesn't require new hardware, why limit yourself to selling on them.

It seems to me that the big business end of the gaming industry, the part that's likely to be making big hit games on big consoles, prefer a predictable production line of content that they know will sell and bring in money. People will buy a pack of 4 maps, but would the put down money for AI? That's hard to determine and risky, not what they're geared up for.

The PS2 was the first console of that gen that I bought for myself, and the Xbox was the last. This gen, those positions were reversed.

Imho, the 360 pad is about perfect, and the PS3 pad is utter crapola.

Dear Sony, please put better triggers in the next dual shock! Dear Microsoft, fix the damn d-pad!!

Both are great controllers; each have a flaw. I think the d-pad on the 360 is much worse than the triggers on the dual shock. The dual shock triggers feel cheap and uncomfortable, but work. The 360 d-pad is basically defective.

I've had the transforming D-pad for a while on the 360 and it's much, much better. Sucks they didn't have that originally, and sucks that ALL controllers don't come with it, but it's at least indicative of some acknowledgement of the problem.

Is the transform/twist part really useful, or is it just that it is better mechanically?

You know, I found the transforming d-pad almost as bad as the original, but for different reasons. It was always transforming itself when I didn't want it to, and eventually the plastic shell snapped and broke off and it became unusable.

Alright, enough of the yammer, I want more baseless and unfounded, truly exaggerated and outrageous rumors and speculation!
It will come with Steam, plus the Halo trilogy
The PlayStation 4 shall have ten 10 GHz cpu's and no gpu.
It shall come with a new and improved Move controller that will come with ULTRA RUMBLE to facilitate feedback in the launch title, a Star Wars light saber game!
Free with the Move will be an upgraded Sharpshooter!
Instead of copying the Wii U, PS4 will copy Oculus Rift and provide virtual reality with head-tracking!
The standard controller shall be an improved Novint Falcon!
The operating system will be open source (but still BSD-based)!
To improve capabilities as an entertainment device, teledildonics will also be supported.

Seriously, I have limited patience for this kind of thing, at this point I'm thinking of freezing myself, or perhaps Sony should have waited until the 10th or something.

You forgot backwards compatibility with PSP games (at least in the first hardware revision) and a built in Bluray disc changer with a 6 disc magazine.

There's something I'm not seeing; consoles not supporting free-to-play seems incredibly counter-intuitive; move hardware, rev share the profits of transactions. Why would Sony or MS not want free to play content on their walled gardens?

Sony has some free-to-play games. DC Online and Dust come to mind.

When it comes to flexibility isn't just one thing, it's a big laundry list of things. Forget Minecraft itself for a moment, but all the things that are different about MC and why MC succeeded.

-It had a deep discount for early adopters, letting people get the alpha for half of the price. Not a few days or weeks before release, but over two years before "1.0"
-Mojang were completely in charge of their own work, and how the project was managed. It's a reason why Notch has occasionally come out and said it's a downside to relying on/being on steam.
-They can release when they want, and to their own standards. No certification process (which can be costly and time consuming, a big concerns to small/solo developers)
-It's mod-able, changing, improving, adding gameplay and content, for free. People can tinker with
-It's on any platform with OpenGL 3D and Java
