Playstation 4

I'm wary of the next gen of systems, mainly because my current systems work just fine and while I certainly understand the want for better graphics I don't see the new systems adding much more than that. That being said I will pick up the PS4 and possibly the 720 eventually, but only if they don't introduce the dreaded no used games systems that each company has patented. If either system puts into place a system that doesn't allow you to play used games I won't pick up that particular system, and I will be more than happy to go back to the games that I never got to in the previous generations and some old school retro gaming on the SNES and NES. Should be interesting to see what they do with this next gen and when they will announce it.

It will not ship, period.

Gotta go with this one.

Indeed. Is it even still being developed?

The rumor is that it is still in development. If we do not see it at E3, though, I am going to assume it is vaporware.

I remember when this was first being talked about. 'twas good stuff.

Xbox has been good to me this gen. Very good.

Which is to say, I've no plans to switch from an MS console to a Sony one yet. I'd be open to that, but I'd need good reason to do so - either MS screwing up or Sony knocking it out of the park.

As for dear old Nintendo - the Wii just didn't work for me. The whole experience left me flat. It was the wife's favorite console of the gen, but she currently has zero interest in a Wii U. I'm sure I'll own Ninty consoles again in the future when my as-yet-unborn kids hit gaming age.

Seems maybe I bought my PS3 four days too early.

What is Sony's rush? I mean, the new box isn't going to be out until the fall, right? It doesn't seem like they're under any pressure to announce something right this second. But it's hard to imagine putting out a video like that and not having something to announce.

Came to post this.
Rumor has it Sony will announce the PS4 on the 20th. I think it's too soon. Rather, this will (probably) be a glimpse of the Sony-owned Gaikai service for the PS3, Vita and eventually PS4.

Too soon? There hasn't been a "too soon" for announcing/teasing a new product for over a decade. It's all about building the hype machine early to give it time to get rolling. And from a marketing perspective there's no better time than when your competition has just announced they're having a hard time meeting sales expectations.

I was expecting E3, as I'm sure everyone else was, but I won't deny that I'm curious. I'd really like to find out how accurate the rumors are about the specs.

Not sure if serious...

Maybe they are afraid of third party loose lips blowing their big reveal if they try to wait and do the reveal at E3. They've seemed to have a lot of problems with pre-E3 loose lips in the past.

Can't agree with you there. The Vita probably launched a couple months too late - coming out of E3 2011 everyone was glowing about it. They missed Christmas in the States, gave Nintendo a price target to get under (that was at least part of the motivation), and the system has not flown off shelves. Nintendo gave the press and audience a whole year and a half to cool on the idea of the Wii U.

However, I don't think this would be too soon for a PS4 announcement, especially if it's coming before November, which is what I've heard (September, specifically).

a) you can be too early; if you guaranteed the release of the next platform 8 months prior, that's 8 months of affected sales.

b) I am being serious; why is the announcement turning out to be the Gaikai service a crazy concept?

Because they wouldn't invite all the press outlets for the reveal of something like that, I think. This is from an invite to an event in NYC.

Sigh, it didn't take much!

I think it goes back to two things: 1) build hype for E3, and consequently, sales (release date could be summer for all we know), 2) beat the leaks from appearing. The lack of secret keeping for previous hardware from Sony has been crazy bad.

Truthfully, though, I doubt a price is known when the 20th is over.

I really want to give Sony the benefit of the doubt this time and hope they surpass expectations. While I'm a huge Xbox 360 fan, I'm still hoping to see the bar raised across the board. Microsoft has enough different problems to solve, and I hope we hear from them soon as well.

Given Sony's PR track record, they'll find a brand new and innovative way to f*ck it up.

Let's talk about the actual date, shall we?

It's on a Wednesday, at 6 PM EST. When the entire US is either eating or commuting home. If you want to get twitter buzzing during it, it's a good idea to target a time when the majority of the US can actually be on Twitter. If you want people to be watching it live, it's an even better idea to schedule it at a time when they, you know, can watch it.

The only logic I can think of about this is that it's going to be more of a investor presentation, because that's aftermarket hours.

cube: why do they have E3 press conferences at 9am, noon, etc. then?

Frankly I think the audience that is looking for a new Playstation is going to be on the up about this regardless of when, unless it's super early in the morning.

Just following the discussion for now.

Quite enjoying my PS3.

I need to look for the quote, but I remember reading K. Hirai saying they were in no fret to release before the next XBox. The way I read it, Sony wants to downplay the fact that the next PlayStation console will again release after the next XBox.

February 20th feels to me like release-fodder to keep the hype up and have plenty of arguments that the PlayStation experience (PS3, Vita and eventual PS4) keeps getting better; focus on that, not on the fact Sony is late to the party again.

The list of misleading or dishonest quotes I could grab from platform holder execs is longer than my arm.

Time is one of the few things Sony has going for it this time around..it would behoove them to launch before Microsoft.. Sony isn't in the best of shape financially to play any sort of cash game with Microsoft. Microsoft still has the luxury of squeezing about as much power as they physically can into a set top box that needs to run 8 hours a day..Sony has to care about making a profit on each unit sold.

Yeehaw!!!

Besides that video tease, are there any rumors that mention this event? PS4 would be nice, but for all we know it'll just be them discussing some of their 2013 PS3 lineup, so E3 can be dedicated to PS4/Vita.

That sort of thing is usually handled at Destination Playstation. It's six days later.

I think both MS and Sony would be happy to announce separately. Fighting for the attention at E3 with both other platform holders probably isn't the ideal way to spend their PR money.

Wow! I was not expecting them to be the first to announce something...

Extremely interested in seeing what's coming!

Michael Pachter has said that it's a press AND investors event, so he's pretty convinced it's a new console announcement.

Yeah there is no doubt in my mind it's the new Playstation. Their "rumored" system specs have been leaking like crazy and might have sped the announcement up.

So it can't be the Playstation 4...because Michael Pachter is never right.

Law of averages... he is bound to get it right eventually!

The Pl4yst4tion, then?
