2013 - 12 month pile thread. Hello New Year, good bye pile!

I laugh at both of you!

Then I turn the other cheek.

You're very kind, and I keep telling myself that, but I know I will be dipping into that murky grey area of self purchase. Of that I'm sure

I'm on the last boss of Dragon Quest IX. If I can beat him before tomorrow night, I'll have cleared six games off the pile in January. That feels pretty good.

I was only able to get through one game this month, though I did pick a long game, and I even completed most ( though I'm sure I missed some ) side quests. Next month will be adventure game month for me maybe I can get more than one in by month's end.

I'm hoping to complete Borderlands 2 within the next two days so I can clear two games off the pile, and then make as much progress into Resident Evil 6 as I can before Aliens: Colonial Marines hits. While it is tempting, however, due to moving I'm staying strong and not buying additional games other than Must-Haves, so the pile will only go up by one in February.

March is what worries me.

No worries. Just send me your copy of Monster Hunter 3G and I'll store it in my pile until you're ready for it.

Not a great start to the year, but considering my goal this year is "Play awesome games" rather than "Whittle down the pile", not a bad one either. Mostly small games off the pile this month, but progress is progress.

There is quite a bit of gametime not reflected in that list. I beat Mark of the Ninja early in the month, but went back to it to 3 star each level, and find all the scrolls, then work through it in New Game+. After an addition 6 or 7 hours, and halfway through New Game+, I started to wan on it. That is one of my other goals this year: continue playing games I'm still enjoying after beating them, and revisit old games.

I also dropped about 7 hours into Deus Ex. It wasn't really grabbing me, but I decided to push through and at least get as far as I did when I tried it a couple years ago. Once I got out of the subway and into the air field, it got interesting again. I'm still not sure if it's really got it's hooks in me though. I realized the other day that I have the same reaction to this as I do to adventure games: when I have a good flow going, it's really fun, but when I get stuck it is extremely frustrating. I'm still not sure whether I want to continue for that reason. Now that I am seeing new content, I want to give it another couple of hours before I make a decision.

I also put about an hour and half into another game from my Classic Pile: Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. That game has a really strong opening. It might not be a fair comparison (because I think the games have different design goals, and were made 4 years apart), but where Deus Ex shows a conversation between shady characters then basically just drops you in the world, Bloodlines takes the time to introduce you to the world before they toss you out into it. In the first few minutes, they show you how "polite" vampire society works, introduce you to some not-so-polite vampires, show you some of the powers that vampires can use, hint at political struggles withing vampire society and tell you why the masquerade is important. I suppose it helps that Troika already had a rich setting to draw from, but either way, I feel way more invested in that world, than I do in the world of Deus Ex.

Garden Ninja, I'm a spreadsheet idiot, and I was going to use a copy of yours, but was totally lost in that your rows jump in number from 9 to 48 and I wasn't not sure how you did that or how to undo it. A bit of googling says to select row 9 and 48 and right click one of them and select unhide rows. That did nothing. A bit more after nearly giving up and oh, there we go, it was a filter.

Well, it seems to be fine now. Most of what you've done is way beyond my understanding, though. I wonder if I'd be better off just sticking with my super simple spreadsheet. It's just sad since you are tracking a bunch of the same extra metrics that I was.

I have filtering enabled, so it might be related to that. On the top row, there are pull down menus that you can use to filter out certain data. I could have been hiding Beaten & Dropped games, for example.

So, end of January update:

Played in earnest:
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)Cargo Commander
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)Hotline Miami
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)Deponia - Great art/characters. Very pixel huntish. Glad I played, but disinterested in sequel.
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)Thirty Flights of Loving - Interesting storytelling, not really a game, but I enjoyed it.
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)Resonance - Loved everything about it.
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)Primordia - Loved setting/characters, puzzles were so so.

Beaten, not on the original goal list:
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)Portal 2 - Why did I wait so long to finish this? I'd give it an A+ out of 10.

Shameful additions (after initial sale post):

IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)10,000,000
IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)Stealth Bastard Deluxe + Soundtrack

So that leaves the following from my initial declaration of steam sale shame:

IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Overall, I'm going to call January a pile improvement at a -2 (beat 5 bought 3). Honestly, I think that's more games than I "beat" all 2012.

Now that I've really settled into the idea of pile busting, I think my short term plan of attack (i.e. next month or two) is going to be to focus on the adventure/action/platformer games from above, then assess the entire pile. For the year, my goal is to end the year with a net pile reduction of 20 games.

As far as the future additions, I have a preorder in on Simcity, I'm really interested in Kentucky Route Zero, and a TBD 2013 release of Clockwork Empires, but otherwise I'm going to make an oath to adhear to Clockwork's Addendum.

Whelp, time to get the pile plan set up. Gonna go with games I intend to get through, as well as possible acquisitions, for the year. Some titles will be added later as I remember what titles I own. Additionally,my ps2 & gc are out of commission so no titles for those consoles will be listed until that situation is corrected.

Possible Purchases:

Dragon's Dogma
Dark Souls 2
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Kingdoms of Amalur
Batman Arkham City
Black Knight Sword
Dust
Mark of the Ninja
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Skyrim

To beat:

Mass Effect 3
Fallout New Vegas
Dragon Age 2
Blue Dragon
Final Fantasy XIII
Rayman Origins (completion)
Batman Arkham Asylum
Casltevania Symphony of the Night (completion)
Cthulhu saves the world
Sine Mora
Morrowind (main quest line for once!)

... more to come...

D - E - D; dead. Gotta fix 'em up as soon as I can. Oddly enough, my psone is still quite functional as is my snes.

I was doing really well until Sunday, the the weakness took over and I added to the pile.

Off the pile:

Max Payne 3

Added to the pile:

Sleepy Dogs
Mark of the Ninja*
Deadlight*
Toy Soldiers*
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet*
Iron Brigade*

*Microsoft Indie Pack. With the coupon I had leftover from the holidays, it only cost $5.00. How could I not buy it for $5.00?

Whoo! Progress has been made! Only buying Aliens: Colonial Marines in February, so I should have a month of progress. I'll also be moving in a few weeks, and the shorter commute combined with not living at home means I'll probably have more time for gaming. In particular, more time to actually play some of my Wii games (after figuring out how I'll be handling that since my niece has games for it, as do my parents).

I'm going to be focusing primarily on Resident Evil 6 now that Borderlands 2 is done, especially since I'd like to review it for my video series. After that and Aliens, though, I'm not sure what I'll move on to. I think it may finally be time to give Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom a whirl.

KEY:
* == Game I started
Bold == Game I'm actively working on
Strike == Game I've completed

Games in my collection I would like to finish/watch the credits roll:

- Lost Odyssey
- Ico/Shadow of the Colossus
- Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword
- Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening
- Dragon Age 2
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Epic Mickey
- Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment
- DeBlob 2
- Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
- Dead Rising 2
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Pokemon Conquest
- Xenoblade Chronicles*
- Dragon's Dogma*
- Guilty Party
- The Last Story
- Borderlands 2
- Dead Island
- The Sly Cooper Collection
- Assassin's Creed 3
- Fatal Frame II
- Paper Mario: Sticker Star
- Far Cry 3
- Resident Evil 6

    • Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
    • Defense Grid: Containment (DLC)
  • Pile Change: +5

Remaining Pile: 86

What a start to the year! A bad combination of having a house guest for most of the month (a non-active GWJer), getting serval games dumped on me for my birthday, and... umm... Civilization V?

Blech, not a very productive month for me:

Added To The Pile This Month:

  • Ni No Kuni (PS3)

Games Finished

  • Saints Row: The Third (PC)

Pile change: No Change
Remaining: 53 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
Progress: 1 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)

In addition, I'll probably be picking up a Wii U in February, so that pile will just keep on growing. Yaay!

Thanks to Garden Ninja's incredible spreadsheet (and he deserves a great big hug for it!!), updating this month was a breeze!

Added to the pile this month:

  • Psychonauts (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Thief Gold (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

  • Frozen Synapse (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • 10000000 (iOS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)

Removed from the pile this month:

  • Secret of the Magic Crystals (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif)
  • Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 1 - Launch of the Screaming Narwhal (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Fairway Solitaire (iOS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Flight Control HD (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)

Pile change this month: +6
Remaining: 70 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (60 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Overall progress: 13 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 9 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 11 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 11

I am currently tackling Tales of Monkey Island - Chapter 2 - The Siege of Spinner Cay, Dead Space, Eufloria and 10000000 all at the same time, so February should be more productive. I hope.

January update! (There's no way I'm finishing anything else between now and tomorrow night.)

This Month's Progress:

  • Fortune Street (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir (3DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Fluidity: Spin Cycle (3DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/bulletremoved.gif)
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Tales of the Abyss (3DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)

I removed Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii since I plan to get it for the 3DS when it releases in a couple months.

I'm particularly proud of beating Dragon Quest IX. I've been playing it on and off for over a year and put nearly sixty hours into it. There's still a ton more for me to do in that world, but for now I'm setting it aside. I will doubtless add a game (or two) in February, but it does feel nice to have a rock solid first month for the year.

Edit: I managed to sneak in a purchase right at the end of the month. Hello, Tales of the Abyss!

2013 Progress:

Well, how much does it cost ($ and time/effort) to fix whatever is wrong with your GC?

I just noticed that you live in San Jose NOT California, but Costa Rica.

Curse you Mantid for reminding me I never put Containment and Hammerlock DLCs in my backloggery

Oof, end of the month already?

Here's the delta for January...

Started:
The Cave (PC)
Bone: Out From Boneville (PC)

Beaten:
The Cave (PC)
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)

100%/Completed:
New Super Mario Bros. U (WiiU)

Added to the Pile:
The Cave (PC)
Ni No Kuni (PS3) (Demyx's copy)
Sir Hammerlocks Big Game Hunt (PC)
Defense Grid: Containment (PC)

Not a bad month, considering work got really busy the last 2-3 weeks. I'm really close to getting all the star/moon coins in NSMB2 so I'll be dragging that into Febtober. Will hopefully slide The Cave into the 100%/Completed designation as well, assuming I'm not bored after 2 playthroughs. Bone was half-heartedly started when I didn't feel like Mario one night and I hope to go back to it although it really isn't grabbing me that much yet. Hoping to start Bioshock 1 next month as well, might be a good offset to Ni No Kuni.

shoptroll wrote:

Anytime!

I'm certainly not finishing anything else today, so...

Completed
Faerie Solitaire

Dropped
Snapshot - I found the platforming too frustrating for my skills, though I enjoyed the concept of the game. But my experience with the game degenerated into: start level, collect a few stars, fall into spikes. Restart level, fall into spikes. Restart level, fall into spikes. Rage quit. So for my own sanity I am going to drop the game.

Added
Candy Crush Saga (Facebook/iOS). Match-3 puzzler. Since it's sucking up my time, I need to count it. The match-3 parts are well done, though I would be happier if the "turns run out over time" and IAP mechanisms were jettisoned.
Dungelot (iOS)
Little Inferno. Started playing, but will declare as a game of the month in earnest after the 3-month, "it's not a pile game, it's just new" period expires. It's not as if I don't have other things to play...

End of January update. 2 games beaten and I have to say, I couldn't have picked two games further apart on the spectrum of storytelling. Where at the end of Saints Row 3, I was still grinning maniacally despite my death toll surpassing 5,000, I was sick to my stomach 2 hours into Spec Ops: The Line. I strongly doubt I would ever have finished the former, had I played the latter first. I applaud Yager games and I am happy Volition has a new home, but I think it'll be a while until I enjoy drawing crosshairs on peoples heads again.

January

Added:

  • Antichamber
  • Cognition: Episode 1
  • Hotline Miami
  • Path of Exile

Finished:

  • Costume Quest
  • To the Moon

I got through most of Outland, so it'll give myself a pat on the back. I'd still like to see more progression, but I think that's a damn good balance for my first month. Feb should be good for me, but March won't look so pretty. I've got a crush on Anodyne, an indie Zelda coming soon, but I know I went to keep my pile growth as low as possible.

February

Goals:

  • Outland
  • Tomb Raider: Underworld

Once I get done with Outland in a few days, I'll roll for another smaller game.

You Know You Love the Pile, so why not show it.

Spoiler:

Link to Hemidal's thread for this month for those who haven't found it yet.

I didn't have as much time as I wanted to get into games this month, but I did finally manage to beat Final Fantasy XIII and some iOS stuff.

Current Game: Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

The Pile:

  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Sonic Generations
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Mass Effect
  • Final Fantasy VI

  • Quantum Conundrum
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Skylanders: Giants
Sonic the Fighters
Virtua Fighter 2
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown
Once Upon a Monster: DLC
