NCAA Football 2013-2014 discussion

There's an idiot on TexAgs saying Louisville will regret that contract. You'll be glad to know I explained that he was wrong.

Also interesting that local Louisville (Trinity HS) 5-star Jason Hatcher decommitted from USC this week. Supposedly has a visit for Louisville scheduled the first weekend in Feb, last weekend before signing day. Maybe his teammate Quick is going to convince him to stay.

Decommitting from USC is a sign of moderate intelligence. Anyone committed to them...I don't know what to say. Maybe if you're a CA kid and grew up a USC fan, to the point that it transcends the unbelievably slimy coach who had a bad year?

But in general, how could anyone want to play there under Kiffen. Crazy.

QFT.

I was asking that question before he had ever coached a game at USC. I still don't understand what made USC hire Kiffin after his stint at Tennessee. Crazy, indeed.

Also,

Wow, were they on drugs of some kind? As long as the buy-out terms aren't as heinous as Iowa's with Ferentz, do what you can to keep Strong in town!

What they said on the radio today is that there is a $5+ million buyout next year, $4m+ after 2014, and then there's like a $2m loyalty bonus for staying through the 2015 season.

So it looks like at least 3 more years of CardStrong. Should be good for recruiting the next couple weeks.

Yeah, after I posted, some other folks chimed in agreeing with me. This guy was being an idiot, not just someone on the Internet with a different opinion.

Btw Bill Simmons just did an all-Manti mailbag. One question dealt with the levels of indefensibly defending your favorite athletes. Level 1 was for people like me who excuse Dikembe Mutumbo for his sharp elbows, since he was using them in the service of my team.

Level 6 was reserved exclusively for people defending/excusing Joe Paterno and co. in any way.

Petrino's buyout was $18 million. In the SEC even the coaches have real girlfriends. Anything can happen, but I think Strong is staying until the NFL comes knocking. Johnny Football is duck hunting in Arkansas this week. Do they hold classes in College Station?

Reports say Dick Chaney isn't around so rest easy Fed.

I rarely have anything good to say about non-Cal, and definitely non-Pac 12 schools, but I might as well add to the legend of Johnny Football.

There's an insider article on ESPN talking about how Alabama, Texas A&M, and Ohio State have the easiest schedules in 2013. Tennessee and Notre Dame apparently have the hardest. fml.

The good news is they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Alabama and Texas A&M are in the SEC. How can they have the easiest schedules?

1) unbalanced schedules because of so many league teams
2) sun belt out of conference foes
3) no one really knows because pre-season rankings are worthless. See: Arkansas top 10 last season. UK basketball top 5 this season. And many many more. Too bad that pre-season rankings determine the championship instead of on the field action. :p

Our OOC schedule got screwed up by our move. In the Big 12, we had Arkansas every year (when they were good). When that became a conference game and t.u. refused to keep playing us, we got stuck with no marquee OOC games for a while.

Big matchups are planned years in advance - we have series planned with Oregon and, I believe, USC (some other PAC team for sure) that will go from 2016-2019 (two games against each team). And those have been scheduled for a while already.

So, Fed, in the trick shot vid ... Aggie Stadium looks a lot smaller than I figured. A&M could stand to add a few more seats, amirite?

Spoiler:

I'm kidding. I can't even get my head around how big that place is. I started getting dizzy on that last shot from the very top row behind the end zone.

Kyle Field actually isn't big enough, so we're tearing most of it down to get to around 100k.

I haven't watched the video yet, but if it isn't clear in it, the Dude Perfect guys are Aggies, too.

The video is confusing. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be in awe of Johnny Football or Dude Perfect.

Both?

And I just saw one of Johnny's throws on Sportscenter! Damn, my daughter was right - again!

(A couple weeks ago I pointed out to her that Johnny Manziel was on TV. She said "Johnny Manziel's always on TV.")

There are plenty of Dude Perfect videos on YouTube that show them doing similar stuff to what I just saw Johnny do, FWIW. I'm sure they're impressive trick shooters in general, but they probably need a lot of tries to get these crazy shots, too.

Sure. In my wildest dreams most of Johnny Football's throws were on the first couple of takes. Also, if he can throw a football through a basketball hoop through the top of the stadium does that mean he can hit someone over the shoulder on a Hail Mary?

I don't think he's thrown one long enough to be called a Hail Mary this season, but the final TD against Bama was delightfully over the shoulder.

I also wouldn't bet that it took him more than 10 - 20 throws to get that. He's just insanely athletic.

Edit: In other words, where would you set the over-under?

Edit 2: According to a radio interview with Dude Perfect, it took less than 10 tries.

Watch out or I'll start passing around a hat to buy Sumlin a Harley and some volleyball tickets.

Just reminding people in case all they remember is last year!

It's not football, not worthy of its own topic but its close enough to football. Just wanted to post that Cal rugby beat stanfurd 176-0. That is not a typo. A little better than last year when we beat them 109-0.

And just so everyone here understands how pathetic and embarassing stanfurd is, here's an SF Chronicle article from 2001 regarding the game that stanfurd forfeited out of cowardice.

best quote of the story:

This week, it was announced that Stanford rugby coach Franck Boivert canceled the scheduled April 7 game against Cal because the team was "very afraid to get injured."

waaaaa! sounds a lot like John Elway after losing the 1982 Big Game...

He made some plays during the Ole Miss game comeback that made the 100 yard field look like 25 yards.

Texas A&M backup QB Jameill Showers has officially announced that he's transferring. This was completely expected, as he's older than Johnny Manziel but stuck behind him. He was the backup for Ryan Tannehill (7th pick in the draft) and now the Heisman winner.

He named four schools that he is considering so far: Arizona State, Baylor, Texas Tech, and CarlBear's own Cal. I'm sure he's looking for immediate playing time; he should have 2 years to play 2.

Can Johnny win 4 Heismans? That's the real question.

Stele wrote:

Didn't he redshirt last year? So if he wins a 2nd one, he'll be 21 and eligible to leave. Seems like he'd go.

Fedaykin98 wrote:

That's a legitimate concern. I hope not, but his off-field ballin' will be much more acceptable in the NFL.

Johnny Football should be in no hurry to get to the NFL.

Let's see what his arm looks like in a couple of years. Right now, it's the arm of a late round pick.

I'm worried that all the focus on RG3, Kaepernick, and Wilson is going to give a lot of "running QB" prospects the wrong idea. Those guys have arms. The running only works because those guys can stand in the pocket and beat you through the air.

Hey, I hope Johnny stays forever! An then transitions to coach! Or university president. Which he'll probably lose when he knocks up some co-ed.

I was just saying today that Johnny missed a few plays in the Mizzou game due to injury, and I want to see if the NCAA will grant him another year of eligibility to make up for it.

Well, my expectation is that, at bare minimum, you'll get to enjoy him for the duration of his college eligibility. So, yeah, for A&M fans, it'll be awesome.

I would love that to be true, but I'd happily bet $100 that he does not play three more years. Lots of chatter about him in the NFL.

At this point, it's empty chatter. No scout will spend a second of time looking at his tape for at least another year. The only people chattering are ones who don't make personnel calls.

I think it is highly likely that, even if Manziel explores the idea of coming out early, when he submits himself for consideration to the NFL Draft Advisory Board and hears what their evaluation is, he'll reconsider. Much like Tebow did.

Again, I'd love it, but I think he'll leave early - if not in 2014, in 2015.
