JRPG Catch-All

I've actually wondered the same thing, Norman. I'm curious to hear from anyone who's played it thoroughly enough to have some thoughts on it.

Correct. The main games are traditional JRPGs.

Talk about enabling me, geez okay

I like the Wild Arms series and am curious about playing the PSP one mentioned above...but under threat of choking, I will pick up Persona first.

Wild Arms are solid games. I played 2 and 3 when they hit the PS2. And yea, they're full on traditional RPGs. I didn't know about that PSP game, though. Gorram it, now I have shopping to do.

Ni no Kuni is so very charming.

That is all.

Is there anyone else here that played the original Playstation 1 Wild Arms that also played Alter Code: F, the remake of it? I'm curious if it has gameplay improvements, but would also be worried as to any changes they might have made to the story.

I was very excited about Alter Code F (having a lot of fond memories of the original). The released game was more like some of the later releases in the series, and I just couldn't get into the gameplay. I still have it around here somewhere, because I never sell anything.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask or not but I recently played and quite enjoyed penny arcade - the rain slick precipices of darkness episode 3 on the iPad. The format worked very well so I was wondering if anybody could recommend any other JRPG or SRPG games on the iPad/iPhone.

Someone will recommend The World Ends With You. Not me, but someone.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is on iOS. It is one of my top ten games of all time, and definitely my top SRPG. It is probably still expensive for an IOS game, but it is worth whatever it costs.

You rang? TWEWY is awesome. I don't know how best to describe it aside from being a love letter to Shibuya, but it's a fun and crazy action-rpg. Haven't tried the iOS version yet though.

It's also more of a game than most iOS games, so you get what you pay for. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 1-4 are also on the iPad too. I think there's some indie throwback games to try as well, like Ash and Dragon Fantasy. Haven't played those yet either.

I've wanted to play TWEWY for a while so I might check that out. I didn't realise so many square games were on iOS, I will have to check out some of the older FF games I have missed.

Square games are expensive on mobile, so keep that in mind. Battle For Wesnoth isn't expensive and gives you a good SRPG experience, if not as flashy.

relative to other mobile games. Compared to PSN/XBLA/Steam releases they're reasonable.

TWEWY on iOS is excellent. The only downside is it's a pain in the ass to get mingle pins, but those were always kind of a pain and they're totally unnecessary unless you're going for 100%.

Square games aren't too expensive at all in my opinion. Twenty dollars is completely reasonable for full-featured games with dozens of hours of content. I've probably spent hundreds of hours in Final Fantasy Tactics alone. It's not fair to compare those games to Angry Birds just because they're both on iOS.

People seem to like the Chaos Rings games. Haven't played them myself though.

Edit: I do think TWEWY is overpriced and I worshiped that game. It was a $30 game in 2008. $20 in 2013 is too high. I realize that's kind of arbitrary because if it were a brand new game I'd think $20 is a bargain.

Another vote for TWEWY, one of the best jrpg is a long while.

I'm playing it on PSP rather than iOS, but I'm having a blast playing through Final Fantasy Tactics. The new translation and cutscenes they added for War of the Lions make it even better than when I muddled through it back in the day on PS1.

I loved the new stuff they added for War of the Lions. I just hit a wall with that game and couldn't progress. I can't even really grind any more.

We all have our opinions, clearly, but ports of remakes of (S)NES games for $16 or whatever seems extreme to me. Clearly Square games have better art than just about anything else on the mobile markets but games like Great Little War Game Show that a giant premium isn't necessary. I see both sides to the arguments but I think I simply can't see past the endless milking of their franchises.

I played War of the Lions on my PSP. There's just something about the ipad that makes me not want to pay over $5 for anything on it.

War of the Lions for PSP was also free for a long time on PS+. It's regular price is $10 which compares favourably to the iOS version.

I wouldn't argue about the SNES ports but their pricing for the Chaos Rings has been fair enough considering that those are new games and the experience they offer.

Oh yeah - the new translation makes a big difference (although different ability names are kind of jarring), and the cutscenes do a great job of fleshing things out - for example, that sidelong glance Delita shoots before riding off with the princess in the beginning is awesome.

It looks like Pandora's Tower is listed pretty much everywhere for a March 26th release. I just put in my pre-order at Amazon. I'm excited!

The big news, though, is that they revealed to PC Gamer its new RPG (pictured above), Citizens of Earth. Players assume the role of Vice President of the world and must investigate strange things happening, while recruiting normal citizens to do your battles along the way.

Looks like the Earthbound guys are up to new craziness!

XSEED announced this morning that they're localizing Rune Factory 4 (3DS) for release this summer. Woo!

Edit: They're on a roll. They also announced Ys I & II Chronicles for Steam in February and Ys: Memories of Celceta (a remake of Ys IV) for the Vita this summer.

I might cave on this one. Unfortunately, it's launching the same day as Bioshock Infinite which means it's going to be buried as far as review coverage goes.

They're definitely drawing inspiration from EB especially the art, but let's be clear... that's not a Brownie Brown or Ape/HAL project Putting it on my radar though.

This year is shaping up to be quite nice for the occupants of this thread.

It really is. Especially on the handhelds.

Speaking of RPGs coming out this year: someone tell me about the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. I know they're roguelikes with Pokémon, but that's it. Are they fun? Are they difficult? I'm trying to get a sense of whether they're something I'd be interested in.

So great I will be poor this year, again.
