Demon's Souls - Catch All

I always meant to go back and finish the platinum. I guess the white tendency event could help with some of that.

But I'm busy playing Dark Souls on PC right now for the DLC. Be tough to switch over again.

I beg to differ, I'm playing both consistently every day right now and loving it

So I had a ton of fun playing Demon's Souls last night on my dex/int build; cleared most of 2-2 as a phantom. The guy I was 'helping' was very new, I think, and had absolutely no carry room, so every time something dropped, he would not be able to carry it and I picked it up. I killed a bunch of crystal lizards and the black phantoms and other stuff, and I got all the loot because he couldn't carry anything. I'm glad he clicked on the corpses to release the loot at least so somebody got it, and I did add him as a friend on PSN and send him a message telling him I would be happy to give him the loot back, but so far no response. Then I rolled in lava like a noob and died.

I cleared 4-1 all the way to Adjudicator, and got all the loot along the way, then got decimated by the boss. I upgraded my Uchigatana to +3 I think, maybe +4, I can't wait to make that thing a crescent uchigatana; right now I am running with a crescent falchion +1 and a kris blade +0.

I whittled armor spider down using my +6 compound short bow in preparation for taking down that pesky fire demon in 2-2. I can't wait to start making unique weapons again.

Spoiler:

I stood on top of the first tower in 1-1 andused my +6 compound short bow to slowly slaughter the red dragon. I hate that bastard, and I wanted the items from the ledge where he sits and breathes fire on everything, like the purple flame shield and the flame resistance ring.

I got so into my game last night that I went all the way up to soul level 30 trying to get my stats up for the Uchigatana, the whole time feeling like a jerk because I told my friend I'm playing with to stay at soul level 20 (but at least I have another character at soul level 19 that will do just fine to coop with him for a boss or two)

All in all, a very satisfying night of gaming, I just wish I'd had more time to hit Dark Souls as well. I'll be sure to play both tonight!!

I killed Phalanx, and took advantage of the White World Tendency to grab the items off the dragon's perch in 1-1. I don't even know if i'll need or use them, but the fire resist ring may come in handy. The White World Tendency wasn't showing up in my game at first, but once it did, holy cow it was like easy mode. I rescued Ostrava, but got killed before making it back to kill Phalanx, and I missed the Cling Ring, so I need to go back and grab that before moving to 1-2. I forgot how large an area 1-1 is. A lot of areas my fuzzy memory placed in 1-2, but that's not the case at all. This game is huge.

Thinking of making a magic focused character since I worry that I'll never really get the hang of the melee controls to a point where I feel confident I know what I'll do when I hit a button. Fireballs seem more reliable.

Magic = easy mode for sure. Personally, I absolutely love the rhythm of melee combat in these games, especially with the huge slow weapons. My go-to weapon in my first playthrough was the Meat Cleaver, you really have to be careful with what you commit to, but when you connect... BAM! knockdowns are such a thrill to me. It's like blasters vs sabers in star wars, I guess, one is an art, the other is just a crude abuse, but I will use both. Both my newest characters in Demon's Souls are casters with a dex secondary.

I definitely appreciate the melee system, and successfully parrying and riposte may be my new favorite thing to do in a video game. I suppose I could go for a strength based hulk who soaks up damage rather than having to rely on the dexterity of my fingers, but at the moment magic appeals to me more.

Also I somehow missed the Thieves Ring, now that I think about it, so I need to grab that too. Same with the Dregling merchant. I thought I was paying attention while playing, but apparently I still missed a bunch of stuff, based on the wiki anyway. It was nice to have made real progress for the night though.

Dregling merchant probably moved to under the wall in 1-2.

So grouping in Demon's Souls is a bit wonky; I understand it's all on the same server at least, so when it works, it works very well. I recall, however, that sometimes you can't summon someone who has already killed the boss you are trying to down. Can anyone confirm this? I had no trouble grouping with my friend for Flame Lurker, even though I had killed it, but after I killed Adjudicator, I could not get grouped up with him in 4-1 for the life of me.

Last night was a good run in Demon's Souls for me and my buddy Rivlen, downed Flame Lurker first try for him, no fuss no muss, then he helped me down Adjudicator. Well, some random other phantom did all the heavy lifting, as I forgot to warn Rivlen about a trap and he died to it, then the other phantom basically 2-shotted everything, including the boss. Kind of anti-climactic, but since I didn't need my Swollen Demon's soul for anything, I used it to make a Meat Cleaver for Rivlen. Man, I miss that thing in Dark Souls.

Spoiler:

I realize these is a cleaver from Maneater Mildred, but a) it doesn't have the same properties in the slightest, and b) I lost it forever when Mildred and I killed each other simultaneously (I got invaded with multiple mosquitos on me and couldn't handle her and the poison damage -- plus I may have panicked, and did not realize it was an NPC phantom until after she died).

I also got my uchigatana up to crescent +2, and my kris blade to +1, can't wait to slaughter some more hapless demons next time! Fedaykin98, I would love some coop with you in Demon's Souls sometime, I guess I should get myself on the GWJ ventrillo sometime soon. I think I logged in there once like 3 years ago? There's a page with the info for that someplace, right?

Stickied at the top of the forum. But here it is.

I'd be thrilled to co-op sometime, but I don't have a PS3 headset yet, and my computer is far, far away.

Also it sounds like you may be way past me? I took a break from working on 2-2 to check out 3-1, which seems to be a dead end so far, though I may just need to explore more carefully.

Then I took a break to play Dark Souls, which, now that I've finished a playthrough, has morphed from "unbeatable scary monster" into "comfort game".

Not a dead end, just tricky to navigate. He might not be too far ahead. In case you haven't discovered this yet, progression is kind of strange in this game. 4-1 easier than 1-3, and 5-1 will be easier than 3-3. The number after the dash is a better indicator of the difficulty than the one before.

Well said, except I found all of 5 incredibly easy last time. I may have been overleveled though The end of the game was anticlimactic as well, but still amazingly fun, if that can make any sense.

I am beyond you, Fedaykin98, but I have a level 22 character that probably is not, and anyway, I don't really care, it's just fun to play with people. Plus I could whip up another character to level 20 or so in a couple hours if necessary. Or we could both start new characters at the same time. or.. or. .. I love the souls games! I have a USB headset, so I use it on my pc and my PS3.

Fedaykin98... I'll be playing Demon's Souls tonight with my friend Rivlen, if you care to join. But first you have to accept my friend invite on PSN

I got some progress in Demon's Souls finally last night, took down 4-2 boss Old Hero and 4-3 Boss Storm King. Took many tries to get past Old Hero, I guess he REALLY doesn't like being hit with spells. Finally, I just stuck to my Lava bow while Rivlen smashed on him with a Meat Cleaver. I missed both crystal lizards in 4-3, though, so that really ticked me off. I'm likely going to fail on the one in 4-2 as well, as I did not employ the proper strategy when attempting him the first time, and will likely screw up again next time I see him due to positioning. I need at least another 7 darkmoonstone chunks. What a pain! Fortunately, with Rivlen running a Meat Cleaver build, he doesn't need his darkmoonstone at all, so I can steal whatever he has.

Did you equip the Thief's Ring against Old Hero? That boss is blind. He only moves toward where he's being attacked from, unless you're sprinting or wearing heavy armor and thus, making a lot of noise. I love that fight. It's like a secret stealth battle.

Yeah, but apparently he really hates magic. Every time I hit him with a spell, he would roar and charge me and smack me down, regardless of what he was doing when I hit him, or where I was or moved to.

Ah, I never played a pure caster in Demon's Souls. That sounds less great.

Dyni wrote:

Well I had my Lava bow, so it worked out. I also could have used my Crescent Uchigatana +3, but I wanted to hit him with spells dammit!

So, Tower of Latria is slowly falling. I played a bit with Rivlen last night, we worked our way through 3-2, I died a few times to an invader, and walked off an edge for no good reason a couple times. Otherwise things went smoothly, I managed to defeat Maneater first attempt, unfortunately Rivlen died before the first demon fell, but I managed to finish him off without too much trouble before engaging the second one completely. Then we cleared through for Rivlen, and I died early in the boss fight, leaving Rivlen alone, and then we ran out of time. Hopefully get Demon's Souls wrapped up this weekend, so I can get Rivlen onto Dark Souls

At this point, we have downed 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3, all of 2, 3-1, all of 4 and 5-1. So not too much left if we get a chance to put in a few hours on the weekend, I'm hoping to get it all finished. Maybe I should just complete everything for Rivlen, as I've done it all before and my completion is not so important. I guess I still have to complete most of it though, or I won't be able to group with him. Hmm.

In my quest to find a game to play after Dark Souls, I've returned again to its predecessor. I've gone from being lost and annoyed with 3-1 to thinking it's a cool level. Haven't finished yet, but I must be close.

Still not sure how I'm going to beat the dude in 2-2 someday, but I guess I'll deal with that later. My flaming longsword is awesome against most enemies, but apparently not him.

May I suggest a weapon. Spoilers for info.

Spoiler:

The Enchanted Falchion in 4-1 behind a black skeleton. It was the weapon I used most in my first play through of that game.

Does Enchanted scale the same way as DkS? Because I haven't invested in magic stats. I started a Temple Knight, so I have a teeny bit of magic ability - just Heal so far, tho.

Yes, and it also gives you MP regen. Blessed scales with Faith and gives you HP regen.

In order to kill Flamelurker, it doesn't much matter what weapon you use, unless you want to use some of the exploits. The best weapon for the easiest exploit is something with reach, like a spear or halberd or something. Otherwise, it's most important to study the best ways to dodge him. Hint: don't dodge sideways.

How do we feel about the Fluted Set? Worth upgrading?

Fedaykin98 wrote:

I personally prefer the Gloom set, it's slightly less defense for the same weight, but has much higher resistances to poison bleed and disease, and slightly better fire resistance.

I just realized, the armor choices in Demon's Souls are really sparse by comparison with Dark Souls.

I felt that bot games need more armor sets. Demon's Souls only has 2 or 3 that I feel are cool enough to mix and match. Dark Souls has 5-8 sets that I like to use. I hope Dark Souls 2 has even more armor to mess with.

I remember paying very little attention to armor sets on Demon's Souls. The boss weapons were the flashy items.

As for Flamelurker, he's the biggest roadblock in the game for a lot of people. I remember the game really clicking for me when I beat him. There is a shield in 1-2 that can help quite a bit for that fight. Purple Flame Shield, iirc.

Yup, especially if you upgrade it, but really if you're getting hit by Flamelurker, you're doing it wrong

Apparently you can't copy a Demon's Souls save and take it with you somewhere? So much for my plans for the weekend.

Dark Souls uses the 360's cloud saves seemlessly, like pretty much every other 360 game I've tried it with.
