Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Corporate dreams are the most bitter dreams of all...

The only hope I'd have for FS3 is that I doubt another space fighter game would come out of a big name publisher, it's the kind of thing they'll wait for someone smaller to do first. I think FS is just too damn old now (13+ years) for anyone to seriously consider a new game as another entry in the series. Meanwhile Saint's Row and Red Faction are fresh in everyone's minds

*sniff* You guys should start a new musical group called "The Dreamkillers" and have all your songs be about ripping the dreams out of babies' heads before they can be jaded enough to have them and then realize they'll never come true.

Veloxi, about 7 years ago, I had a chance to talk to the guys at Volition as a part of a game design course I took at UIUC.

The question I asked was about Freespace. They just looked sad.

And so did I.

Day: Ruined
Dreams: Crushed
Heart: Broken

My day is returned to a happy place. Thank you, AA.

Shoot there's a bunch of nice looking space sims coming out. Give me Homeworld Total War. Hell just give me Homeworld.

HOMEWORLD ISN'T A SPACE SIM! IT ISN'T EVEN THAT GOOD OF A STRATEGY GAME!

*pants*

Sorry, with Conquest: Frontier Wars recently out on GOG, I am so, so, SOOOO tired of reading Homeworld comparisons.

If they made FS3 with Newtonian physics, I'd be willing to kick $100 for a Kickstarter.

Nah, Newtonian physics changes the whole nature of the game. It's the culmination of the best of the turn-and-burn sims, and it needs to stay that way, IMHO.

I don't disagree with you necessarily.

You just disagree with me?

No, it's just the $100 tier of the turn-and-burn version will have to impress me.

Also, Strike Suit Zero is on sale on Steam for $15, normal price $20. This makes me more tempted, because I definitely don't want to spend $20, but $15 is slightly higher than what I really want, but I don't know when the next sale will be, but I also play two hours of Planetside 2 everyday so it's not like my pile is shrinking.
Thanks for the coupon link, but these days I just can't make myself care if a game isn't on Steam; too damn convenient.

Er...using that coupon code gets you a Steam code I believe. :/

Well yeah I wouldn't consider it a space sim, just space strategy. We got what seems like a plethora of space sims in development. I want more strategy and 4x games. Also the idea of mixing it with total war style pleases me greatly. Or hell just total war space would be awesome.

Yes, yes it did. Paid with PayPal, got the Steam code in e-mail, have it installed, and ran it once to setup graphics/sound/controls. Didn't actually get to "play" as the wife came home and wanted to watch some TV. Hopefully back to it tonight.

Steam price is $15.99. The code Veloxi gave makes it $14.99

Well, you have...

StarDrive
M.O.R.E.
Predestination
Distant Worlds: Shadows
Beyond Beyaan
Deep Space Settlement
StarMade
Starsector (formerly Starfarer)

At least to look forward to.

Yes but I want them now!!! *stomps feet* Well also I generally have no interest in space sims. Save freelancer I never could get into them. Also that list is awesome and I'm gonna go google all the of them.

Edit: Also have I mentioned recently how much I love that fact that their are so many niche games coming out for everything. My only worry is that half the stuff will never be released and the other half will take three or four times the development time they say it will.

Yeah, it's a great time to be a fan of niche gameplay, especially space games. I don't mind games taking longer from indies as long as they're finished and get the attention they deserve pre-launch.

Strike Suit Zero mission 1 complete.

No "strike suit" yet, but the regular fighter combat was very good. Game looks great, and plays smooth. Works well with PS3 (emulating 360) pad. Trigger firing seems to make so much sense now. I feel like I should go back and play FS2 or those recent mods released and tweak my controls.

Anyway, fun so far. Controls tight so far. I like the speed/boost mechanics, and lasers/missiles seem responsive. Even the EMP to avoid missile attacks worked pretty well, for the start.

We'll see how the suit stacks up when I get it.

You get the suit in mission 3. It controls very differently from a fighter, so be prepared for that.

Stirke Suit Zero mission 2 down.

Lost the capital ship I was supposed to protect once and had to restart checkpoint. Not too much time lost there. So far I'm ok with the frequency of checkpoints.

Did not get the bonus goal this time. Will have to replay mission soon.

Onward!

So APPARENTLY, in today's THQ auction, Volition went to Koch Media for around $22.3 million. Koch Media are the folks who publish the X series through Deep Silver. Since they have an interest and investment in the space game market, part of me is PLEADING that somehow, this leads to a Freespace 3.

But hey, a guy can dream, right?

Freespace 3, the Modern Military Shooter*

Did mission 3 of Strike Suit Zero (SSZ or SS0? Pick one somebody, I'm tired of typing 3 extra words ) earlier but forgot to post. Suit was weird. While trying to use it, the ship I was protecting got blown to bits.

Seemed to control ok though. Was I supposed to use it to target dozens of torpedoes all flying at the ship? I thought it was better for taking on big targets? I don't know. Guess I'll figure it out. But the space pew-pew is still awesome.

Son, you best watch your tone here talking about Homeworld. I may have some words to say if you continue on this dark path

Bring it, "Captain," if that is your real rank.

Hey folks, I happen to have an extra Steam key for Strike Suit Zero, and am running a little contest to make sure the most deserving person gets it.

Thanks, and good luck!

I started back into Space Pirates and Zombies this week (which was a Steam gift from some awesome GWJer). Man, what a fun little romp. I've opened up a bunch of systems and bought a bunch of gear to test out in various builds.

I haven't checked this thread in far too long. Can't believe I haven't heard about this game until now. I'd enter the contest, but I may just buy it tonight if I don't feel like waiting for the contest to finish.
