Wii U Catch-All

Curse you, Nintendo! I had sworn off the Wii U, and I was holding strong. Then you go and do a double whammy with SMT x Fire Emblem, two of my favorite series, AND you add Wind Waker HD into the mix, my favorite Zelda since LttP. I'm just glad they didn't toss a Metroid game in there too, or my will would have completely shattered.

I am crossing my fingers that we can use our old Wii Points to pay the fee to upgrade our old Wii Virtual Console games to the Wii-U Virtual Console. I've had 15 or 16 Wii bucks just sitting in limbo there since 2007 or 08. EDIT: Just watched the Nintendo Direct for myself and since the discount will be applied in the new eShop and not in some sort of import, the usage of old Nintendo Points seems very unlikely. Oh well.

Wind Waker HD looks great even if I would have preferred a Majora's Mask update or an original Zelda game more. My kids will flip over the Yoshi game as they have managed to max out the game clock on Kirby's Epic Yarn over the past couple of years. A new 3D Mario from the Galaxy 2 team has me pretty excited as well. I'm pretty "meh" on Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and the Japan-centric stuff but I am glad that others here are getting games that they are excited about.

I think I am most looking forward to finding out what Retro is doing as Metroid Prime was one of my favorite games from the GC era. My preference is for an original IP, maybe a western style RPG in the vein of Fable or Kingdoms of Amalur, or even Skyrim. Other possibilities I would love to see would be their take on Eternal Darkness or even a reimagining of the Legend of Zelda series.

A Majora's Mask remake is rumored to be in the works for the 3DS

Is this how you two keep in touch during the day? Bantering back and forth in the WiiU thread over Nintendo rumors

I'll believe it when I see it.

Edge Magazine has already gone after Nintendo for what they announced. The gaming press disdains Nintendo.

http://www.edge-online.com/features/...

Meanwhile, PC and mobile continue their inexorable rise, and Microsoft and Sony prepare to unveil their next-generation consoles. 2013 could be the year in which the videogame landscape is utterly transformed, more quickly and more viciously than anyone could have forecast. When Nintendo finally delivers the games its fanbase wants, will they still be interested?

The title of the article is "promises, promises" and they end with two unannounced consoles that may or may not be releasing this year. There is a reason that I feel like most games writers are dumb. It's just so odd that in the same story the writer doesn't get that it's odd to criticize Nintendo for "promises" and then talk about the promises that Sony and Microsoft are on. It's like they have forgotten what the first six months of the Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii were like. Or even with the Ps2/Xbox and Gamecube.

50% this, 40% weird analogies, 10% arguing over Netrunner

Agreed. I'd expect a bit more impartiality from Edge.

Oh well, at least it inspired me to dive back into a classic.

Uh, most certainly? Nintendo's fanbase isn't going to suddenly lose interest in playing Mario and Zelda because other games exist. Other games have always existed.

A better question to ask would be if people outside of Nintendo's core fanbase will care.

Don't announce games: the press says your game lineup sucks.
Announce games: Promises, promises.

What?

Because there all those amazing Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Pokemon clones out there. There's so much quality games like those, I'll never get to the Nintendo ones...

Oh, wait. That hasn't been true... Ever.

There's just no pleasing some people.

I for one am freaking out about the Monolith Soft "X" trailer... it's like, almost a Monster Hunter...

Someone needs to tell chris kholer what vaporware actually means.

Kyle Orland at Ars seemed relatively cool to the event, although that's based on a quick skim. Will read it at home and probably contrast it with Kuchera at PAR. Hoping Kohler weighs in at Wired as well.

Yeah, something like that.

I hear Darksiders is a pretty cool guy...

It's actually very similar to Xenoblade (interface) but it looks it has multiplayer and some monster hunter elements, which I think is awesome.

Once again the Wii U proves I live in a different universe than the enthusiast press. I'm excited. The Wii U is awesome. I never want to read another gaming news site ever again.

Is it weird that the 30 for 30 sale makes me want to go ahead and get a Wii U?

I mean really, spending $350.30 just to play Super Metroid in May? When I have the SNES in my guest room hooked up to the old non-HD TV?

I am so silly.

Yes, I agree, I chafed at his usage of it. I'm pretty sure vaporware means "stuff that is announced but will never see the light of day". I doubt that applies to Mario Kart, 3D Mario game, Zelda and Smash Bros.

Going on his definition, any announcement of a future game without a date could be called 'vaporware'... or even his next article, for example.

I don't even. This is terrible reporting.

It's not silly at all. /enabling

Well, apparently there are all these other vaporware titles you could get...

Vaporware is harsh for sure, but I do understand a little bit where he's coming from. I'm excited for most of the games they announced today but I do wish they had some dates. I really hope some of that stuff comes out before the end of 2013. Guess we'll find out at E3 (maybe?)

It 's just an other example that Nintendo is damned if they do and damned if they don't by the enthusiast press. They cannot win with them so they shouldn't even try. They shouldn't be very cooperative with the enthusiast press because the enthusiast press doesn't matter anymore. I don't need Chris Kohler, Edge, Polygon or anyone to tell me what games I want to play.

And that Nintendo averages 2 year releases for everything, and that it's been 2 years since the last Mariokart, 3D Mario, and Zelda.

Kinda convenient how that works, huh?

The last Mario Kart game out in like 2007 or 2008. they do one Mario Kart and one Zelda usually per console generation. It's just silly how the press acts.

EDIT: Gumbie, this was the first official announcement for ALL of those titles. People have assumed that they're working on them, but Nintendo doesn't announce until relatively late in the dev cycle. And saying that these games are vaporware then comparing them to the new consoles(which, remember, all these guys have been predicting to come out < insert current year here > for the last 4 or so) is a pretty gigantic leap.

Ulari, Mario Kart 7 came out in 2011.

That is on the 3DS. The prior one came out on the Wii and the prior to the DS. I don't think we'll see another Mario Kart on the 3DS. is what i meant.

Also the last 3d Mario will be 3 years ago this May.

November 2011.

Let's just make this clear: cube is including 3DS games.

That's fine but I thought we were talking about consoles...

Super Mario 3D Land was 2011.

Talk junk about that game at your own peril.
