Path of Exile catch-all

Open beta weekend this weekend.

I might hop back in and help test this weekend.

This is the first open beta weekend since this game jumped on to my radar. I think that I am going to jump in and give it a try, and then pay them the $10 if I like what I see. Any advice for a newbie starting out?

Don't treat it as 'just another diablo clone' in how you build your character

How so?

I sort of treat it as 'just another Diablo clone', but as one that's super awesome and does almost everything I want a Diablo clone to do.

If you've played Diablo or anything like it you'll get the point pretty quick, but perhaps the biggest advice here is that gems are meant to be put in and taken out of weapons when appropriate and can be done at any time. Gems are what give you your skills (like fireball) and will level up as you use them.

Also, you might want to take a look at the passive skill tree before you play. It'll save you some time: http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-s...

You can do builds on that page, btw.

Thanks for the link. I've played a few of the games in the genre: D1-D3, Titan Quest, Sacred 2, a bit of Torchlight, and probably another that I'm just not thinking of right now. As far as the skill/experience systems go, they can run the gamut from completely forgiving (Diablo 3) to "you messed up, best to just start over." I was just kind of wondering if there were any major pitfalls a player should look out for. For instance, in Sacred 2, you found glyphs that you could use to power up a skill. However, if you leveled a skill up to much without also leveling up your lore/mastery of that tree, then the resulting increase in regen time could render the skill close to useless until you were able to level and balance everything out.

Of the games, I think I spent the most time with Diablo 1 (because it felt VERY new then) and Sacred 2 because it really felt like there were A LOT of very different, but still viable ways to construct you character.

On that note, take a look at some of the builds of the week.

Yeah, I think you'll like what PoE has to offer, Jason.

Speaking of making builds, you'd probably also like Din's Curse, which has a ton of combinations.

Downloading now for the public test weekend. Really looking forward to trying it out, seems like it'll scratch that itch that Diablo 3 (as fun as it was) didn't quite accomplish

I didn't have a ton of time to play, and my playing partner could only play one evening. However, I had a really good time with this game over the stress test weekend. I haven't actually played very far into the game because I didn't want to get ahead of my playing partner our first time through.

I liked the game enough that I've already started 4 characters and played them up to where the two of us left off Friday night. So far I've made three witches (summoner, fire, and ice) and a ranger (went with a bow for my first one). I like how differently they are playing, and I haven't even tried the other four character classes or a couple of other build ideas I have for the ranger yet. I was more than happy to give them money to secure a place in the closed beta, even if it ends up in open beta a few weeks from now.

My only regret is that the free beta weekend was right before the release of Borderlands 2 which I already preloaded on Friday. Too many games, not enough time. There are certainly worse problems to have.

What a cool build.

Even cooler is how impressed the developers were by it; here's hoping they leave it intact.

That's a pretty clever combo.

I really like watching those build of the weeks. To me they highlight how such games can reward player inventiveness, rather than just simple cookie cutter builds and direct damage. I suppose the thing with PoE is that they've set up a system with zillions of parts that can interact.

Got beta access not long ago, played for one or two hours, thumbs up for an indie developer. The skill tree reminds me of The Witcher 2, looks very cool and unique, after all, it cost more than 5 years of development.

Friend up Robear; I was enabled by the skill tree.

I like the old school vibe.

Open beta starts on the 23rd Jan.

Might need to get back into this.

Heads up, beta in 21 hours. Looking forward to giving this a proper chance, played for a bit last year but I didn't have the time and it was just a beta weekend.

I've been watching a stream for the last 2 days, I'm liking the game much more than I did back then. http://www.twitch.tv/devmoon

Ooh, the game with the loopy skill web, I'll definitely need to give this a go.

Looking forward to giving this another go, now that my characters won't be wiped. Enjoyable and deep, but slightly clunky, were my initial impressions. Can't wait.

Got my client updated and rolled up a Marauder this morning for kicks. It moves a whole level slower than D3 or Torch2 but I remember the ranged combat on the Ranger felt excellent and it's doing enough interesting things with the skill gems and barter/crafter economy to warrant a second look.

Does anyone have a spare beta key lying around? Impatient + my account only had access for a weekend last year.

I know, but it's still 8 hours from now and i'm bored, not in the mood for Dota today.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to log in to get/update the client, and everyone will have their characters wiped in a few hours anyway. 0.10 isn't out yet anyway.

Patchnotes are up though: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/vie...

You could reserve a character name if you could log in.

The 0.10 patch is up. 1.5GB for me coming from the previous version.

Been playing this for several months now and it is very well done. It is a throwback game - think more D2 then D3. The currency system is pretty obtuse, but the skill tree and customization of characters is very deep and you can play the same class but each one will play differently depending on the skills you focus on. I have found it very enjoyable - flawed, but overall FUN!

Remember kids, Hardcore is where it's at. If you're silly enough to go and die, you just go to the normal league and don't lose the character.
