Gaming Confessions & Blasphemy

hmm, FF blasphemies... FF12 is my second favorite FF game. And I actually like Vaan as the main character.

I don't see any Super Mario RPG or Earthbound in there. What's wrong with you?

EB carts are going for $200 on eBay recently. I ... uh ... recently checked for a friend...

And no game is worth $200. Especially not World of Warcraft.

Earthbound is worth $200 to me, when I don't have anything better to spend $200 on...

I loved FFXII (not just because I got the Zodiac Spear waaaaay too early). But Vaan never made sense as the main character until he saw the ghost of Ashe's fiance. Given how the story shakes out, I saw it more as he and Penelo being swept up and witnessing the events that occur. They are the witnesses of these great events that are achieved by Ashe, Bache, and the ever awesome Balthier.

Yeah, precisely.. so you, as the main character Vaan, are not really the protagonist, which I thought was brililant.

Bit of a tangent, but my most longed for SNES cart is actually Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

Still have mad love for the classics (FFII, FFIII, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Link to the Past, Super Metroid, etc.), but I can never seem to get ZAMN out of my head when thinking about SNES's brightest moments.

Look closer. There is no Earthbound but there is Super Mario RPG right between Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World. Earthbound is a bit overrated IMHO. I would still like to own it but it costs too much.

P.S. My pics not kexx's.

Earthbound is over $200 now?! Holy crap. Looking at a lot of the good retro games, their prices have really jumped since the last time I browsed. Man, I'm glad I still have a lot of these.

Although I could make a mint selling my carts if I ever want to (not that I will).

While on the topic of Final Fantasy. I've only played XIII-2 and I loved it. =)

Most of the "omg that was awesome" games (Secret of Mana, FF2, FF3, etc) are going for $50-60, but Earthbound is $200+ :/

My two thoughts on the price: it was a limited release to begin with, and has a fervent fan base from those we were exposed to it.

Man, I rented Earthbound and didn't like it at the time. But what did I know...

You also have to factor that a lot of those other games have been rereleased or ported in some manner (Secret of Mana is on the Wii Shop, right?), but Earthbound has only gotten the original cart release in America.

You have a unique opportunity to experience the evolution of the series. If you don't mind going all the way back to 8-bit, I recommend playing through them. Then you can jump in on hating people that like Squall or prefer Areith to Tifa. And if you do take this journey, and don't know what I'm talking about, can you please film a reaction video to Final Fantasy VII end of disc 1?

I also think you have a grand opportunity to see the growth of one of the biggest franchises out there, and at the same time, one of its biggest downfalls. Except, if you actually enjoy FF13-2, well, you might not see the actual downfall.

Also, I´d suggest starting from 4. Previous iterations (NES) aren´t as great, at least, its what I´ve heard. I´ve never played 2 or 3, and I dabbed with 1 a bit, but it didn´t grab my interest. It´s once the characters actually have names and stories and personalities, that it gets interesting, and that starts with 4.

And agreed, send us a reaction vid of the end of disc 1 for FF7.

The first Final Fantasy feels quite different since there aren't any "characters" in your party. You pick your classes, name them after your friends, and off you go. There's a plot, but it's basically "your guys go stop the evil guys." I remember taking the manual to school and perusing it, hidden inside some textbook, during class.

It's interesting as a sort of historical artifact, but I wouldn't actually recommend playing much of the original Final Fantasy at this point. Like most video games it has aged exceptionally badly.

Well, here's a blasphemy: I think most old video games really suck if I play them again now. Almost universally things have gotten better. I especially think this is true with, say, FFVII: as much as I loved it at release, that game looks and feels terrible if I try to go back again now. I just can't even imagine slogging through it again.

Some 8/16-bit and similar era games kind of hold up. Maybe A Link to the Past does. Mario 3. But for the most part, good riddance.

What about Rogue and other 1st or 2nd gen rogue-likes? I remember playing days and days of Hack and DnD... and I played a bunch of Hack a couple years ago and thoroughly enjoyed watching my @ symbol run around killing Bs and As and the odd c or g!

To expand on this, I feel that the NES is the absolute oldest console that you can go back and play now - and even then, some of the games are too archaic to enjoy. Trying to play Commodore, Atari, et cetera is no longer fun outside of a nostalgic re-visit because of how far gaming has come.

Oh.My.God. I remember that!!!! Having to drink potions and using scrolls just so I would know what they would do!! And sometimes they would kill me!! That was an awesome game. Never beat it, though. Was it beatable?

Interesting. I consider NES as effectively the start of console gaming. I forget that there was stuff out before it, though I did have an Atari 2600 before the NES. Personally I'd say most NES games are too archaic and not worth it. Arcade games were designed to be quarter suckers, and the NES came out in the same era, so a lot of the games were designed the same way, just because that's how game are made. Even the games I personally am nostalgic for on the NES (Mario 1, 2 and 3, DK, Duck Hunt and maybe a handful of others) have better iterations on the SNES. So you can go back to the NES, but why bother?

Some versions yes, older ones no.

Because Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.

I have a fantastic remake of FF1 on my iPhone... too bad I will never play it to completion since I generally hate anything but puzzle/board/tower defense games on iOS devices. Got it on sale for like $1.99 and I would totally play the crap out of it on XBLA if I could (and seeing as how the 4S is almost 720p they would probably be able to reuse the art).

Are we still doing JRPGs? Here's my confession before I played Final Fantasy 7 I liked JRPGs at hour 20 I swore of the genre forever.

A lot of older players will tell you that there was nothing like playing the old Atari games with the original arcade hardware. I imagine that is the truth. I don't know if you can play emulated versions of Missile Command, but I got to try it at MAGFest and was honestly a bit surprised by it. It's an interesting and hectic game, and yet even if you feel like you're doing badly, it's easy enough to get a few screens in. It was a game perfectly designed to lure you to keep trying to play again and again.

So some old games are still good, though it depends on the game, its design and if you have the original hardware. Galaga is also still pretty fun.

I still enjoy Final Fantasy 1, though the franchise has made enough improvements that it can be tough. For example, the amazing discovery of automatically changing a character's target if the original target happens to be dead. Nothing worse than wasting a precious spell on a corpse.

I'm pretty sure all the remakes of FF1 have fixed that little issue. I played the GBA version and it was great, although of course nothing at all like later Final Fantasy games.

The original Playstation 1 remake allowed that to be an option. I actually find it really cool that it could be an option.

Because Mylon's Secret Castle.

Fix´d for greatness.

As someone who bought an Atari 2600 last year, they're right. There is nothing quite as sh*tty as playing old Atari games on the original hardware.
