Anyone interested in playing/learning 40K online using Vassal?

If this becomes a weekly thing i may make it later, but cant this one. I'd field Eldar... I have to pick up 6e beacause i've not played since 3e.

Are you guys full up yet? No experience but I'd like to start getting into some tabletop gaming

Not at all. We're not even doing leagues or anything yet. If you're familiar with the program, just try to set up a time with someone to play. We should probably get a few games in anyway before we start anything "official".

So it appears that you can't get the Warhammer 40k module for Vassal? The website says that due to copyright issues, they cannot host the file. So fogrob, do you just play with the base Vassal client?

Sent you a PM

Justinbot and I are going to be doing a super small tutorial game this evening at 6:30 pm CST. We'll be using skype for voicechat. Send me a PM if you're interested in joining us and I'll send you the skype invite.

Starting the "GWJ" Room on Vassal. Feel free to hop in whenever.

I want in!

Good learning game tonight with just a couple squads. I'll be up for running these over the next couple weeks while everyone gets familiar with the new rules, so just let me know.

After that, I figure we can start out at 500 pts and go from there. If anyone has any rule, army, or vassal questions, post them up and I'll try to answer them as best I can.

In Warhammer related news for you guys.. GW updated the Rules FAQs/Errata for 40k today.

After last night being a success, and generally having a good time learning, I decided to go to the official GW site to see what the initial starting costs would be to get into the physical game.

F*** that. I'll stick to Vassal.

EDIT: Is this the most recent Codex to use if I want to start messing around with Space Marine builds? http://www.amazon.com/Codex-Space-Marines-Games-Workshop/dp/1841548944/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1358438389&sr=8-2&keywords=warhammer+40k+codex

Yep. That's the latest one for "vanilla" marines. Good beginner army.

Yeah, I wanted to try out the 6th edition rules, but didn't want to spend GW level money on a game so this Vassal stuff is perfect for me.

Does anyone have next Monday off and would be interested in getting a game in during the day?

GW keeps their pricing at the "Mercedes of wargaming" level. There's certainly a small number of companies that charge more for better product, and some companies that charge less for similar product, but a new army is always a small fortune.

Coming from the guy who has spent way too much on Privateer Press' Warmachine/Hordes over the last year and a half...

Also, it doesn't help that any store that wants to carry one line of GW has to bring in 12' of GW product - including the full rack of paints.

I have off. It's my birthday/MLK Day! If we can schedule a time, possibly later in the evening, I can see if I can swing it.

The rulebook costs about $75 alone.

Holy sh*t. Why do people even get into that hobby?

Hmm, how late into the evening were you thinking?

Also, is there anyone that wants to play a game during the day (like around noon-ish east cost time)?

Eh, its a hobby. Why do any of us spend money on anything?

Some people find the assembly fun, others find the painting fun, and others find playing fun. And then there's the people who find tournaments fun...

With the core rulebook, you can usually get away with one copy per play group. At least with Warmachine/Hordes, I've been playing for a year and have yet to buy any of the core rules. I usually play at a local game store, and they don't mind if we borrow a copy of the book off the shelf whenever a rules question comes up.

Where they really stick you with prices are the models themselves. Single HQ/leader models have MSRPs starting at $16 for 40K. Single troopers at $14. Squads (5 guys) for $30+. Elites (5 guys) for $40. Vehicles for $40. A 500-pt army turns into quite an investment.

There are some folks I know who buy into a new army each year, and fund themselves by doing top-notch assembly, painting, and care of their models - then sell off the whole army to buy the next. A sh*tty paint job can ruin the resale value of models, but high detail, lots of free-handing, light sourcing, and shading can add significant value to models.

Let me know if you guys play Monday evening. If it's not too late, I wouldn't mind spectating.

Never heard back from Vrikk, so we didn't get a game in yesterday. I still really want to play some. Unfortunately, my next several weeks are going to be really busy, so I don't think I'll be able to plan something out ahead of time. If a time does present itself, I'll make sure to post here asap.

Sounds good Tkyl.

Someone either bug me here (PM), Skype, or email - I completely forgot about this until I saw it in my recent postings. I was free from about 8 PM on, but am just bad at remembering much of anything beyond wearing pants for work.

Just because it's similar, I wanted to mention that heroscapers.com is hosting online seasons still. They use google docs, and a couple of community developed tools to play.

This is the site originally created by the founder of Plaid Hat Games, the makers of Summoner Wars.

Is this now a moot/dead initiative?

I believe so. After the first week, everything seemed to dry up.
