Defiance: new blend of MMO

Pages

Syfy channel and Trion Worlds are combining to make a new mmo. Not only will it be a FPS, but the game world is going to affected by the TV show and the other way around as well.

I'd love it if the show opened with a shot of someone bunny hopping across a battlefield to teabag a freshly killed enemy. If it doesn't then it's obviously not realistic.

I'm getting a very strong Global Agenda vibe from this. Not necessarily a bad thing except that Global Agenda already exists and its free.

Honestly, it looks good. Now interested in hearing about details at E3.

Sounded like a PR pitch. Don't tell it its 'exciting' or 'ground breaking' or 'fillinanyofthemanysuperlativestheyoverused'.

Show me.

Oh, and rapid clip transitions doesn't convey the point with any impact. It just forces me to hammer the pause button and squint at the blurry image.

All games start off their pitch like this.

This may be the closest and improved upon idea on the old AC story model yet. Just like everything that's come since though. It's a matter of execution.

For those that have signed up for beta their first beta event will be on 1/18

I'm signed up and waiting for an email.

The series will premiere with a two-hour episode on April 15th at 9 p.m. EST

emails are going out for the stress test next week.

Downloading now!

They were not kidding about the stress test. Man it is laggy. But I'm liking it so far despite that.

Anyone looking for an invite to this weekends beta could try http://www.defiancejunkies.com/2013/01/14/defiance-beta-giveaway-come-and-get-em/
That one just went live.

Played a few hours of the beta and enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure there was an NDA in there so I don't want to say too much.

They announced today that the game will be normal retail price ($60) and have no subscription fee. http://defiance.com/preorder

I didn't put much time into it. Didn't get past the typical MMO tropes. Looking forward to PvP and the event/story systems, which we may not see in the beta.

There was a PvP section this last weekend but I was not online when it happened. Hopefully they run some more of them though.

lets just say as far as pvp that people should expect the normal things complained about that's been complained about for every skill related shooter out there. Still a ton of fun.

Definitely interested in this game. Might throw down the $5 for preorder blindly without even playing it. I had a key for the last beta weekend but wasted the weekend playing Cards Against Humanity and Munchkin.

Spoiler:

The weekend was not wasted

There's a rumor going around that there's emails going out for the alpha testing which is basically the whole game. Not just the small piece folks saw this past weekend.

While the subset available during this last weekend was pretty limited, what it had was playable, enjoyable and a good base for an MMO. The PvP I did was also limited, but decent, with all the predictable problems. Why are game developers addicted to repeating the errors of the past?

Jeez, I was hoping there would be a discount for a digital only copy. Guess not. $59.99 no matter how you look at it.

Preorder FAQ

Howdy -

In response to the Q&A thread these questions have been answered and we'll continue to answer more questions as we get the answers, approved wording, and appropriate guidance.

Q: What is the value of 1,200 bits? What is the real world value of the 30 day exp & scrip booster? How much is the season pass worth?

A: As much as I’d love to give you clear answers on these, individual values of these are still being tweaked as we adjust the balance of the game. What I can tell you, is that we intend for 1,200 bits + 30 day XP boost + 30 day Scrip boost + Season Pass together to be worth approximately $80. If during our balancing of the game it turns out that any of these elements are worth less than what we intend, we’ll increase quantity or substitute an item of greater value. People who buy Ultimate and Collector’s Editions are very important and we make sure the value they receive from these editions is much greater than what’s in the actual box.

Q: What exactly is a "lockbox"? Would really love an answer on this one and how it will work in-game.

A: Lockboxes are containers that typically have a few items such as weapons, shields, resources, or currency. Lockboxes require Key Codes to open. You find Key Fragments by exploring the world and defeating enemies. Once you have enough fragments, you can combine them to create a Key Code which unlocks a lockbox. Lockboxes with rare items may require many Key Fragments to create a Key Code. The lockbox that comes with our special editions is already unlocked, and doesn’t require any Key Fragments or Key Code. It’s a really nice bonus.

Q: Will the outfits apply to all characters as often as we want? Also can we display parts of one outfit and parts of another, or simply one total package?

A: Outfits are purely cosmetic and consist of 2 parts – the main outfit and headgear. The Ark Infiltrator outfit comes with sunglasses for headgear. You can mix and match the outfit and headgear. Our preorder outfits apply to all characters on your account, and can be equipped and unequipped as often as you like.

Q: Will the colors apply to any vehicle we obtain or limited to one vehicle type?

A: The preorder offer is not a vehicle color as much as a special color vehicle. All Ark Hunters start out with a quad runner they can summon at any time. Those who preorder will have a different looking starting vehicle than anyone else. The color does not apply to any other vehicle you acquire or drive as you play the game.

Q: Are the exclusive weapons a low level fun item or does it somehow have special properties that can be broken down for use in later game items?

A: The exclusive weapons are exclusive versions of weapons you can find in game. They are more appropriate to starting characters, but the real benefit is having access to these types of weapons ahead of where you might naturally encounter or find them. These weapons give starting characters a much better shot at surviving the dangerous world of Defiance.

What platform is everyone thinking they will get it n (assuming you are thinking of buying)? I was leaning towards Xbox 360 since that is where I generally game but it seems like most others are thinking PC.

Anything involving shooting will have me going PC first before anything else.

Ark Fall codes can now be redeemed at http://defiance.com/en/my-ego/.

Sure thing. Release details were announced today:

Trion Worlds, the leading publisher and developer of premium games for the connected era, announced today that the anticipated online open world shooter, Defiance, will launch globally on April 2nd. A one-of-a-kind transmedia experience, players and fans can experience Defiance on the PlayStation3, the Xbox 360, or a Windows PC and become part of the online world ahead of the April 15th debut of the Syfy TV show.

Got a beta invite, tried to log in. Nope. Servers aren't available or something. I got to see part of a cutscene though, so... yay?

Servers were down for a while as the made some changes but they are back up now I believe.

Nope. Just tried, still not available.

I tried it a little on Friday, but it was on a laptop with no mouse so definitely did not get a good feel for it. I was hoping to play some on my desktop today (Sunday) but it was not in the cards. My Alien character looked pretty badass though!
