So three weeks 'til you're posting this in the loathe thread? :D

Who's loathing now?

Awesome! Beautiful fish! I have the black version of your friend's jacket. It's a most excellent Oregon jacket.

I really want to be able to go steelhead fishing one of these days. I've done a fair amount of salmon and trout fishing but never have gone steelhead fishing.

This was my first time steelhead fishing and it certainly won't be my last time. Right now I'm trying to cobble together the gear I need to fish more regularly, since I am woefully unprepared (see: the fatigue jacket and jeans I'm wearing in the photo).

A buddy and I went out to his cabin near Tillamook, OR and we went out on a drift boat on the Trask river. It was completely empty on the river all day because Highway 6 was closed due to the police finding a dead body during the night. We caught 4 steelhead total, I got two of them and here are those pictures (I'm the dork on the left).

I sure hope the body wasn't found in the river.

Awesome! It doesn't have to be a particularly expensive hobby as long as you don't go down the buying a boat route. Fly fishing stuff can get rather expensive.

This is me from the last time I went salmon fishing. It was combat fishing in Alaska and was great fun. I can't wait to get back into fishing, but I'm concentrating on other things monetarily right now. I may not get back to it for a few years.

Coincidentally, that is the black version of that mountain hardware jacket.

I love fishing.

Where were you in that shot. It looks like Cooper Landing/Russian River to me. I miss that (I don't miss the combat part, though).

Combat fishing?

Yup, that was one of the main spots on the Russian River just up the road a ways from Cooper Landing IIRC. My friends and I did some boat fishing on the Kenai river, but it was a bad day for Chinook fishing. Against all odds however, we did have someone catch one on the boat (it wasn't me). Most of the other boats on the river that day weren't so lucky.

I like a lot of things about Alaska and Anchorage. I could probably live there quite happily if I could get a job there that I enjoyed.

That stretch of the Russian River is extremely popular with tourists. During most of the runs it's asshole to elbow for miles.

That's where my Alaskan friends took me. It was fairly early in the season, so we just stuck to the spots that weren't uber crowded and had a fun time.

Having locals on your side always helps. I spent my early years in Gakona, which is right off the Copper River, and then finished growing up in Soldotna, so I'm more than familiar with the milieu.

edit - and sorry about that inadvertent channeling of my Grampa's commentary on the situation.

Haha! My grandparents/mom lived in Cooper landing for awhile, so I'm familiar with the area in that respect. It was really weird to go through the area and see the little log church thing in Cooper Landing that my grandpa was a pastor at way back when, very surreal for me.

Anyways, good times, and I can't wait to go back.

Handset sales. Those don't happen nearly often enough in the Wild East. Got a Note 2 for $5 a month. The hardware is quite good and the software isn't as borked as Samsung used to be. Totally happy with it. Can't go back to tiny smartphones.

I gotta admit, over a decade later I still think this ad is the coolest.

I used to work with a guy who had an icon of St. Christopher the Cynocephalus in his office. I have no idea how seriously/religiously he meant it, but his name was Chris.

Got one of those too. It was a bit awkward getting used to the giant phone, but I've gotten the hang of it now and totally I dig it. All other phones are babies!

The screen real estate is particularly good for certain tasks:

Reading email - the iPhone has always seemed a little cozy to me, but now it's positively claustrophobic. Screen too small!

Reading books - Not quite a Kindle, the Note 2 is still large enough to make reading on-the-go a comfy experience for me.

Visual media - excellent for showing off photos of the kids or the latest vacation. Flipboard and Pocket articles feel spacious.

Surfing - all the above condensed, the larger screen and the usual display type makes surfing on the Note 2 feel just like what surfing on a comfy 23 inch monitor on a desktop, only you use mobile site formats instead of desktop formats.

Those are the killer tasks, IMO. Since I do all of those extensively on my phone, the Note 2 was a natural transition and felt quite liberating. I can't say enough good things about it. If all I did was text and call, I think one of the lower end bulletproof Nokias would be my go-to device.

NINA!

New boots + new bindings = best first day of the season out on the slopes EVAR!

I positively ripped down hills that I was really tentative on last year. Board felt crisp.

I feel that way when I've just gotten new tires on the motorcycle. Enjoy the slopes!

I'm done!

Unless I screwed something up badly, I'll never have to take another damned USMLE test ever again! Hurrah!

Khan Academy is so great. I'm tutoring a high school junior in Calculus and watching the videos has given me so many great ideas. I really need to get my own kids started with this stuff. Man, I wish we had materials like this when I was in school.

In a meeting today, someone mentioned Woot.com, and the fact that they're having a Woot-Off right now.

Coworker: What's a woot-off? *type,type, type* Oooooohhh!

That reaction was priceless.

Yes, and it's probably going to fall off.

Thanks, all!
