Gaming Confessions & Blasphemy

Confession: I have no idea which one of the Final Fantasies is which. I liked that one where everyone is an 8-bit character. The one with the guy with spikey hair was okay. No, I mean the really spikey hair. That one with the gun-sword was absolutely stupid.

Here's my confession: I only know the US numbers for Final Fantasy and even if I look it up on wikipedia I'm sure I'll forget it right away (so please don't bother telling me).

I thought Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, and 7 were all pretty cool. What the heck happened to 4-6 anyway? I wonder if they would have been any good... I guess I'll just never know.

US 2 == 4
US 3 == 6

Japan 2, 3, and 5 were never released in sequence in the US, but have been made available on Nintendo handhelds over the years.

Also, the re-releases fixed the numerical order, forever erasing from the world that US's 2, and 3 ever existed with those names. IT's now 1-13 all over the world.

Oh, come on... Wind Waker was freaking fantastic.

Except if you still have the SNES cartridges

My confession is that if you live in the Western territories and name Final Fantasy titles according to their Eastern origins, you're a hipster douche. :p

Spoiler:

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's not about being hip, it's just a matter of effective communication. People here that care about JRPGs at all know what I'm talking about when I say FFVI. And it's not like this is some new thing. FFVI has been called FFVI on game covers in stores since 1999. Thirteen years is long enough.

f*ck people that call Trenched "Iron Brigade," though.

Just kidding.

Yeah, I'm just ribbing.

For some reason, I've never been able to get the Eastern numbers right in my head. I purchased FF II, FF III, & FF VII (NA) all on their respective release dates so I guess they'll forever be II, III, & VII in my mind in spite of the incongruity with the Eastern FF lineup.

Honestly, I often refer to IV as II anyway, but that's partially because of how significant it was to me at the time.

Thanks to this thread I'm now considering going to PSN and buying all the FF games I can. Never finished 12 and now I really want to.

I don't think 12 is available

Those are so beautiful. I know discs are more effective, but I'll be damned if cartridges aren't the most beautiful thing ever. I might even cry and stuff.

Hear! Hear!!

Memories,

Like the corners of my mind,

Misty water-colored memories,

Spoiler:

Of the way we were

Do I spy Blackthorne in that collection?

It's the first stages of oxygen deprivation after spending ten minutes trying to blow the dust out.

Which is a shame, I didn't give it a fair shake when it came out and I'm not plugging in the PS2 to get it up and running now. I'd love to see a rerelease on PSN/Vita though.

I've been putting a lot of hours into FFIX on my Vita, and I'm looking forward to playing FFX-HD whenever that comes out. Now gimme FFXII!

In my opinion, it's really worth it. 12 was a really good game. It doesn't have that FF feel, but it doesn't mean it's not good. Save for the fact you play as a topless 12yr old boy, the rest of the party bring some cool stuff to the playing field. If you like a more political climate in your RPG's, I say you plug in that beautiful PS2 of yours, and give it a try.

Ugh yeah... Vaan. Penelo was ok, they should've had a female protagonist one game early and had her as the PC (or Ashe, or Balthier), and replace Vaan with, I dunno... a hat rack or something.

Would've been great if the lead character had been Basch as the original lead designer intended. Alas.

I remember hearing/reading somewhere that Ashe was originally penned to be the protagonist, but I can't confirm that with anything official. She definitely struck me as being more protagonist material, Vaan was more like the reason all the other interesting characters got together.

I've heard Balthier, too. Who knows. This French article, when google-translated, seems to indicate that Basch was originally the main character.

All of whom would have been better than Vaan. I don't think the multiple years of delays helped FF12 at all, it was a disjointed mess compared to previous FF games. People may not like Squall or Tidus, but they at least made sense as the protagonists of the stories they were in.

Zidane is clearly the best FF protagonist. I think it helps that he isn't voiced, I can project my desired personality and tone into his text. And he isn't an angsty teenager, or an annoying brat.

And the lack of voice being a good thing goes double for Quina as well. I actually find myself laughing at some of the stuff Quina says as I play through FFIX again, but I can just imagine the sort of voice actor they'd get for Quina now in our fully voiced era...

Yea you do If ever there was a game more deserving an HD remake... well I can think of a good dozen but it deserves one as well.

The idea of a fully voiced Kefka is also a bit frightening even though he is one of the best FF villains ever IMHO. Fully voiced Rydia would be interesting since they would need either one voice actor who could do both a childish sounding voice and an adult voice or two different voice actors.

Zidane's voice isn't so bad

edit: one for Rykin too! Anyone else want their childhood illusions shattered?!

You're only confirming my desire for everyone to get the same quality localization Nintendo got for Xenoblade and The Last Story for everything else. British and Scottish and Irish accents for everyone (and I guess Welsh is its own thing too?) and quality voice acting for all.

Truth told, I always preferred the sprite for Kefka. Y'know, as he just looks posh rather than like a clown. In fact, as pretty an art style as Yosh*taka Amano has, I've always preferred the sprites (which, for some reason, never looked the same as his designs).

I played FFIII (SNES) in my early teens, so it should come as no surprise that I always imagined Kefka with more of a Beavis voice

Ugh, that's a little painful. The voice isn't terrible... but the acting, yikes...

But to be fair, the voice work for most of the core Final Fantasy games has been pretty good, a little overwrought at times (which seems to be common in Japanese media of all kinds from what I can tell), but it's mostly solid other than that.
