Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Anyone watch the latest mailbag? Holy sh*t that is a lot of 90's in there!

I want those binders so incredibly much to accompany a YouTube idea I've been kicking around.

It's great that we've found something to bond over, dad.

Okay, the last part of this week's podcast is absolutely classic, not least because they've got to be going to a bowling alley near me.

How do you guys burn thru an entire BombCast that fast?

10 minute walk plus a 20 minute wait for my train. 30 minute train ride. Then 1.5-2 hour set up time at work. If it's an older podcast that I'm catching up on I'll put it on while I do chores or am fiddling around with a project or game.

I'm working on a SQL based questions system we've created for a client which has very little administrative support. Actually building the various questions, conditional questions, logic behind them, and so forth is pretty simple for me but tedious as all get out. Podcasts that let me move my brain to another space help a lot and I've been working on this for the last nine hours. I'm kinda sad it's over, all things considered; now I'm just listening to my rap station on Pandora.

They talked about Jeff Goldblum this week. We need to merge this thread with the Idle Thumbs thread, because they are now basically the same thing. I am okay with that.

Perhaps!

Bunch of fun dudes talking does not equal bunch of nerds trying to be funny.

I'm sorry.

You don't have to apologize for being wrong. It's okay--we understand

My pure optimism and joy is just too much for you to handle, Blind_Evil.

Scoops, Wizard and now Jeff Goldblum. What Idle Thumbs thing will Giant Bomb rip off next?

Vinny stops playing games.

Jeff composes a game soundtrack with his makeshift band.

The apology was more for my foot up your ass, man. Again, sorry.. but you make me do this.

This week's Bombcast was pretty excellent. I was initially frustrated because they started going on about iOS games and I was like "Dammit, my last podcast refuge from iOS gushing and now they're doing it too" but then they spent most of the segment taking the piss out of Skinner Box design which I think is mobile's biggest weakness right now so yeah, that was cool.

I wanted to ask, is anyone else having the video issues I Female Doggoed about above? They've been getting steadily worse for me and I'm at a loss of what to do about it. Basically, if I play stuff with the YouTube player, it's all good but if I use the internal player (on either the production or beta sites), the downloads stall and cut off after a random amount of time. Doesn't matter if I use streaming mode, progressive mode or even if I try to download the videos, they never complete. This doesn't matter for most content except the Premium stuff which I basically can't watch to completion any more. Given that I really like Jeff's Jar Time videos, this is getting incredibly frustrating. I have a 10MBit fiber connection at work and a 28MBit cable connection at home, through completely different ISPs. They both have good traceroutes to their media servers but this same thing happens in both places and only on Giant Bomb. They refuse to even acknowledge anyone posting about these on their forums so I'm not sure where to go to get help with it. Does anyone else run into this?

Have you tried running the downloads through a download manager that could provide a little more active maintenance on dropped connections? (I'm a long-time fan of DownThemAll!)

I don't seem to have any issues playing the premium videos using the progressive HD... really strange :/

I am having problems also with the premium content. Even with the resolution lowered the Jurassic Lark video pauses for me every minute or so.

I haven't been able to get videos to even play in the regular website but I'm not a premium member.

Huh. What browser/OS combination are you using?

Firefox and Win7. Not sure when it started exactly but I think it was shortly after they were acquired by CBSi. Very rarely a video will play but it is so unreliable I just default to YouTube.

Huh. Seems to work for me using Windows 7 64 bit and Firefox 10.0.1.

Dave said a while back that they had to change to CBSi's video player (which is apparently a lot worse than the one they used to use) in order to get access to CBSi's ad roll. That doesn't explain the playback issues though as the videos still stream from the same server (that being media.giantbomb.com). Their silence on this is deafening. I think I might try to e-mail their support address and see if it's still going. If I get no response from that, I may request a refund on my remaining premium membership. If I can't access the premium videos and they aren't going to figure out why, I really am getting no value out of it.

I've sent two requests and haven't even gotten a response from them.

Yeah, I sent an email out about an unrelated website issue and it took them three months to get back to me. I think they just suck monkey balls at actually getting back to people on tech related issues. At some point either demanding a refund through the Bombcast email or just charging it back via the credit card seem like the best options. Let them try dealing with American Express/Visa about the issue.

'Tis a shame it's not working for some people, as this past week has been a boon of subscriber content.
