Dibs on bow, dual sword, and switch axe.
Lance for when it gets tough.
This could be a WiiU seller for me. I'll keep my eyes out for unlikely WiiU deals.
Or 3DS seller, that seems more likely based on price.
As I stated in the Wii U thread, the Japanese version launched without voice chat or keyboard support. Siliconera has reported that both will be supported for the NA versions. I would have enjoyed the original game a lot less without a keyboard, so I'm glad they're getting these implemented. I assume they'll be patching them into the Japanese version.
I'm thinking this'll be one of very few digital purchases for me. I won't ever want to be MH-less. Letting ClockworkHouse borrow my MHTri disc resulted in me buying the PSP version of Freedom Unite, it's a sickness.
Wii U for me; I want to play in beautiful hi-def.
Monster Hunter 4 is 3DS exclusive (initially) I believe, so that one I'll roll with on that platform.

MH4 is also the first portable game in the franchise to feature official online play. I'm going to have a 3DS XL by then to play it on, but I'll have to get a franken-stick as well. The things we do for love.
Also, that picture looks hella Monster Hunter *Freedom*, what with the snowy mountains and all.

Oh are we calling dibs now?
Hammer and hunting horn for me, I think... I've always been a hammer user, I think hunting horn might add a bit of depth to it, maybe?

I'm going to agree with you on both points, keyboard is very good, and download is most likely route for me, as I'll be playing this a lot. A part of me wishes to have a physical copy of the game 'just because' but I also want to give my Wii U's disc mechanism as much rest as possible!
I'll be in so much trouble if there's a bundle with something cool in it though, like a statue or a book... I might have to change my mind... or buy both...

They might package it with the new pro controller. Hmm, can you use the Wii Classic Controller with MH3U? I'll have to look into that. I'll likely just use the Wii U gamepad, but I'm curious. Edit: random message board posts suggest that the Wii CC works, so that's a nice option for those tha already own them.
I was kidding about dibs, since that's not the sort of thing that matters in MH. So long as someone can cut a tail.
Double-edit: Huh, Capcom is giving away a free Wii Classic Controller Pro with preorders.
I guess they had some sitting in the warehouse still.
Oh no, I'm calling dibs on hammer, can't take it back now!
Yes I think I read the same about the Classic Controller (and CC Pro, which I have from the Monster Hunter Tri bundle, coincidentally). I think i'll just use that, or the gamepad.
I guess I will have to buy a headset to use voice chat with.
Everyone got all mad at me last time around when I called dibs on the lance.
Looks like I'm getting a Wii U in March.
If we're calling dibs because we're going to have massive GWJ group hunts, then I call being some kind of gunner, like I always am. If we're calling them just to stake out territory like 6th graders talking about which comic book character they're going to date, then I still call gunner. RAWR.
Oh, but I'll be playing on 3DS. Is there cross-platform play?

Yes, but the 3DS/Wii U cross-platform play is local only. And the 3DS version won't have online. MH4 will, though, if you don't mind the wait.
I can live with that. Most of my MH play is offline anyway, so no great loss.
I don't have any choice but to not mind the wait, so looks like I will settle in for the long haul. =) Not like I think I'll be done with 3 any time soon, as I barely scratched it on Wii.
Will the 3DS version be capable of link-up play with other 3DS users locally? If that's the case, then that should make PAX East very interesting.
I'm planning on getting this, though there's a fear in me that it'll be too MMO-ish and I won't be able to get sucked in. Someone compared Dragon's Dogma to Monster Hunter, which has me a bit giddy as that's the first game I've played where I really didn't care about the story quests, but judging by gameplay videos it's only in the notion that there are monsters wandering the world and you kill them gleefully and frequently.
My checklist:
[ ] Beat Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)
[ ] Get a 3DS
[ ] Get MH4
[ ] Beat the living crap out of any wyvern that comes my way. Now in 3D.
Not very likely to accomplish point 1 this year tho (so many distractions on the pile).

Yes. 6th graders.
Ok, speaking of dating characters, I'm going to throw this question out there: Do you play as a male or female in Monster Hunter? And why?

I wouldn't say it's MMO-ish, so you should be perfectly fine to be sucked in like the rest of us for 100+ hours...
I don't see it like an MMO at all. Sure there's some gather items quests in the beginning, but I feel like that's part of the tutorial of the game. You can easily solo the game, but it's also fun to team up and take on some bigger challenges.
It's like the opposite of an MMO. There aren't even experience points, and until Tri it only had ad hoc co-op.
I think I might get back into the gunlance now that they've added it back in. I hear they rebalanced it to make it better for soloing, and I've always really loved how fiddly the gunlances are. Cooling plates popping open, ejecting spent shell casings, etc.
The PS2 game had online too, LM. /stickler
Hey, now that Capcom has patched in USB keyboard and voice chat support, do you think that if we complain loud enough they could patch in bigger sized lobbies as well?

Your face is online.
I just popped into Tri for an hour, hunted a Rathian... man it felt good, everything came back to me pretty quick.
Two things I observed:
1) My play time was 306 hours... I had no idea it was that high.
2) The optical drive sure had a lot of loading to do
This pretty much confirms my going the download route.

You and I were apparently cut from the same cloth, but I have you beat by about 80 hours.
Looking forward to hunting with you in March

I too look forward to this happening.
I have actually put in "Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Release Day" into my calendar.
